Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does the autofocus on this lens go with video modes on the a7 series? Hoping to use this on my a7Sii and Movi without having to stop down to get a manageable depth of field. Would be nice to keep it shallow but have the auto focus track walking talent for me rather than trying to keep them in the focal plane!

A: I use this lens with the A7R, mostly for still photography. However, on the rare occasions when I do shoot movies, the auto focus seems to work very well. Hope this helps.

Q: 2. Do I really need to buy the UV filter to protect this lens since it already has an anti-reflective coating on it?

A: The purpose of the UV filter is to protect the front element of the lens, not necessarily to act as a UV filter.

Q: 3. Where is the model number located on the lens?

A: The model # and serial # are located on the underside of the lens barrel close to the lens mount.

Q: 4. I own the Sony A7 with Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens but will be going on ski trip this winter and think the lens I have is too big to carry when skiing. Would this 35mm lens be a good option for skiing and still be able to get really good pictures. If not what would you suggest? Thanks

A: The Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens is a very good lens and is sharp and fast. The lens is a prime lens so unlike the 28-70mm it is fixed lens at 35mm. If that is a good focal length for you, yes that is a very good lens to use and it is much lighter and smaller to travel with and carry.

Q: 5. What 35mm lens will fit my Sony A7r ll that won't need a connector?

A: This Sony/Zeiss f/2.8 35mm lens will fit your A7rII without an adapter. The other native 35mm options are the Sony/Zeiss f/1.4 and the Zeiss Loxia f/2.0.

Q: 6. I am a videographer and own a Sony a7ii. I am torn between a bulky prime like the Sigma 35mm 1,4 Art and the Sony 35mm 2,8. Is the quality difference between the two really that big? I am really attracted by the later's size.

A: The f/2.8 is a wonderful optic, and very compact and light. The answer comes down to what you are after in terms of handling and creative results. The Sigma is two stops faster, and will give much shallower depth of field and a different quality in the defocus areas outside the focal plane. You may also find the feel of focusing the lens different, something that may matter to you for video.Sharpness-wise, the f/2.8 exceeds the capabilities of your sensor, so you don't need to worry about that aspect. It is a truly amazing lens for its size and price. I am also a fan of the manual focus Zeiss Loxias, which handle beautifully and have lovely bokeh. They are also in between these lenses in aperture and size, and I find them very well balanced on the a7 body. Why don't you rent both of them before you buy, and see what you think? I often rent a lens before I buy it, and that has helped me a lot with my buying (and no-buying) decisions.

Q: 7. Does any part of the outside of this lens move when it is auto focused by the camera, i.e. does the manual focus ring move when it is auto focused or does the front element move in/out or turn? How well is the lens weather sealed?

A: No part of the outside of this lens moves during autofocusing -- neither the front element nor the manual focus ring. The only movement is internal. I cannot speak to the weather sealing.

Q: 8. is FE lens's focus ring mechanical or by-wire? many small body lenses such as m43 and fuji use by-wire focus, once the circuit is broken, the lens can no longer be used in any way.

A: This Sony lens has a mechanical focus ring.

Q: 9. Will this lens fit my Sony a6000? How is the performance with this camera?

A: Yes, this is an e-mount lens. The a6000 is an e-mount camera. This is a very sharp lens and should give excellent results with the a6000.

Q: 10. I'm going to purchase this lens for my Sony A7 so I'll have a lightweight small lens that I can have while skiing. For bright snow pictures would you suggest a circular polarizer filter and if so which one is the best?

A: A circular polarizer can be a good option for skiing, as it will darken your exposure by two stops. For a great choice, I suggest the B+W 49mm circular polarizer http://bhpho.to/1DXAFty. Should you want to darken by more than two stops, another option you can try is using a variable neutral density filter, such as the following made by Rodenstock: http://bhpho.to/1DXAWwJ

[0.12x] A must have for the Sony a7r. Great optic. Small, light and sharp as they come.

[7, Rounded] The Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA is a prime lenses that is fast, sharp, and provides excellent quality from to edge. Out of all the lenses and different cameras that I've used to the past, I have to say right now 35mm is the best I've seen. I have to say my favorite settings are f2.8, 5.6, and 9. Now I just ordered the Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA, and I will let you know after I spent some time with it, how the two compare side-by-side. I'm thinking that the 35mm be still my personal favorite out of the two.

[0.525 lb] I sold my Leica 35mm Summarit to fund this as I wanted the auto focus and the electronic contacts. I truly loved my Leica lens keep in mind. Before I did though, I rented one from Lens Rentals to thoroughly test. That is when I knew for certain that it was the right lens, and every bit as good as all the reviews stated earning it 5 stars. I shoot for a living and have used and owned many lenses over the years, and I can honestly state that this is among the sharpest.

[Autofocus] I sold my Canon gear with three L lenses to go lightweight. This SEL35f28ZA is four oz. I find I get more out of using this one prime than I did from Canon's 24-70mm. I like the tiny hood. I probably would have bought the SEL55F18ZA if I were to do it again, but I'm excited about the FE 90mm macro just announced for next years release. While there are camera combinations that are also excellent the Sony mirrorless fits the bill for me.

[f/2.8] Zeiss quality, light, sharp, small, priced about right, and native to your A7R system; what else could you ask for!!!

[Sony E] Really, you cannot go wrong. Small and light really complements the A7R camera. This is my "hiking/landscape" lens, when I want to carry the least amount of weight. Fast enough for good depth of field shots. As mentioned in the title. very sharp.

[7, Rounded] Extremely sharp and very nice bokeh. A bit of vignetting at some settings. This lens makes for a fantastic compact walk-around package together with Sony's A7 series cameras.
Recommended without reservation.

[Sony E] The lens is excellent. I use the lens with the A7II. It's very compact and the hood is really nice. It really protects the lens while minimizing the extension from the lens. Being of Zeiss construction, it feels very well made. The focus ring has a nice stiffness to it. No complaints whatsoever.
