Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the autofocus quiet enough to use while filming videos? (with a shotgun mic mounted on the camera)

A: Yes, the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens uses a linear stepper autofocus motor which is already very quiet and compatible for video recording usage needs. As you are using an external shotgun microphone which further increases the distance of the microphone from the lens, you should not have any issues with audio from the stepping focusing motor inside the lens.

Q: 2. How are the bokeh and focus breathing on this lens?

A: From testing in store and from owning this personally, the bokeh of the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 is aesthetically quite pleasing and quite clean, although depending on what you're used to and your tolerance for "busy-ness", your own review might be skewed. It does have some focus breathing, which might be an issue in video.

Q: 3. Does this lens come with a lens hood?

A: Yes

Q: 4. Is this Lens compatible with the Sony FS700?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Sony FS700.

Q: 5. Can the lens be auto-focused when the lens hood is reversed and is in the storage/transport position?

A: Yes, auto focus works with the lens hood reversed but manual focus is difficult unless you use it or remove the hood completely. By the way, I think this lens takes phenomenal photos!

Q: 6. Would you recommend this lens for the Sony A7R IV?

A: The Sony Sonnar 55 has performed well on my A7R III. As it is one of the sharpest lenses available in this focal range I would think it would do very well on an A7R IV with the higher pixel count of this camera's sensor. I don't use this focal length frequently but when I do I really enjoy this lens. Its small and light and gives excellent results.

Q: 7. can this be used with a Nikon film camera like the Nikon F2?

A: No it can not , only Sony E mount Cameras

Q: 8. Can I use a lens that's made in the UK?

A: Yes, any E-mount Sony lens regardless of region will work on a Sony E-mount camera, like this incredible Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Sonnar T* lens!

Q: 9. What’s the difference between a Sony Zeiss lens and Sony G master lens? Thank you Which is sharper?

A: Although Sony doesn't produce a 55mm prime lens in the G Master Series, the main difference would the built quality and the physical de-clicked aperture for those shooting video. Otherwise, both the Sony Zeiss and the Sony G Master lenses are very sharp.

Q: 10. What size of the filter should i buy for this lense? a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/900278-REG/Hoya_anxt55uv_55mm_NXT_UV_Haze.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/900278-REG/Hoya_anxt55uv_55mm_NXT_UV_Haze.html/a

[49 mm (Front)] The size and weight is fantastic considering what it delivers. Makes it a wonderful walk around lens that can take amazing portraits when needed. If I just had one lens it'd be this one. And then I'd need another camera for my 70-180 tamron and i'd be set.

[Sony E] This standard fixed zoom lens is very sharp even with full aperture f/1.8. The optical quality is consistently supreme from f/1.8 to f/22, which most of other 50mm lens can not beat. I own a Canon 50mm f/1.2L, but that is not comparable even with aperture goes down to f/1.8. Except the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4, so far this is the second best standard fixed zoom lens I have seen. Given its price and weight, Zeiss has done an amazing job!

[9, Rounded] I'm an old school photojournalist guy that back in the 80's would never have been caught dead with a 50mm lens of any kind. As I learned to do environmental portraits, especially in tight spaces later on doing corporate work, I discovered the 50 as a great lens for medium portraits and even for sports coverage. I really struggled pulling the trigger on a $1000 50mm lens but I did it and have not regretted the purchase. The 55 Sonnar constantly produces breathtakingly sharp images that even my clients notice. Hitting the zoom button on my A7 and A6000 is a pleasure as it's always shocking to see what kind of resolution you get even at 400%, on a preview image. The lens is not only sharp but also has excellent contrast and makes it easier in post to get the snappy images I like to make. combined with Sony's recent sensors, which are really great, the 55 combo on my A7 is a really nice way to work. I find myself reaching for the 55 on jobs when maybe I shouldn't--finding excuses to use it when another lens might be more appropriate. In short, it's worth the cash and I have no regrets...

[55mm] I really love this lens. It is the lens that is always on my A7. I rarely use any other lens. It is extremely crisp.

[9, Rounded] Like everyone else's reviews this LENS is great. Used it one several projects and the results are beautiful. I debated between this lens and the SONY GM 50 1.4 but I thought this was a better buy. Besides I did tons research and most of the reviews rate this lens very high. Also BH sales was very helpful in the decision making.

[0.14x] I have bought and sold numerous lenses from B&H as I am very picky on lens quality and sharpness. This lens had stayed on my camera constantly and the IQ is unsurpassed with any lens that has come and gone since. What a primo lens and worth the cost. If you are wanting one of the sharpest and quality built lenses sold today for Sony, you need this lens in your bag... but need it mostly on your camera!

[49 mm (Front)] This lens definitely lived up to its Zeiss name! Superbly sharp across all aperture and from center to edges. The bokeh is very nice and smooth as a 55mm lens and the colors look great.

I actually bought this lens instead of the 35mm and have not regretted it yet.

[8 x 4.4 x 4.3"] I have primarily used the lens for landscape work and some portraits. I bought this lens to compliment the 35 FE as well; I needed something longer and the 55mm fit perfect for my needs. I'm using the lens on the Sony A7R and the files are incredibly sharp especially stopped down. It has been coined the Otus lite by some and seeing specs for both I would agree. It's a very sharp lens. I don't worry about getting another stop out of it because I shoot at higher apertures mostly. The focus ring is very sensitive, it's easy to move it out of focus if you're not paying attention but that would be my only gripe. The 35mm is more stiff, which helps keep focus. It's built very well too. I really like the 35mm FE 2.8 because I enjoy the focal length but this lens exceeds another lens I have in terms of sharpness. If something happened to my 55, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
