Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this monitor be powered off a Tiffen M2 Steadicam sled since it has a lemo? Anybody do that? Thanks.

A: The Steadicam M2 Top stage uses 3-pin LEMO connectors for accessory power and the SmallHD ULTRA 5 Bright Touchscreen Monitor uses 2-pin LEMO for power input, so the Steadicam M2 cannot be used to power the monitor.

Q: 2. Does it display camera information on Canon C300 mk III? Shutter angle, ISO and WB, etc.

A: The SmallHD ULTRA 5 will display info as it is set to. Having it show you camera settings is a configuration between the camera and the screen.

Q: 3. Can the Ultra 5 control a Sony ZV-E1?

A: No, the SmallHD ULTRA 5 Bright Touchscreen Monitor only has controls for high end cinema line cameras, like the Sony Venice 2 and ARRI Alexa 35.

Q: 4. Is this monitor Small HD's replacement for the 503?

A: The SmallHD ULTRA 5 Bright Touchscreen Monitor has several improvements over the 503. It is brighter and has connections to control RED or Arri cameras.

Q: 5. This comes with a transmitter which can be mounted on the camera. And the receiver is built into the monitor. Is this correct?

A: The SmallHD Ultra 5 Bolt 6 RX 750 Monitor Kit (V-Mount) is just a receiver attached to the Cine 5 monitor, there is no transmitter in this kit.

Q: 6. Does it display camera information on FX6? Shutter angle, ISO and WB, etc.

A: The SmallHD ULTRA 5 Bright Touchscreen Monitor can display camera information from the Sony FX6 Full-Frame Cinema Camera (Body Only) when the Info Display within the camera menu is set to on.

A: Yes, the SmallHD ULTRA 5 Bright Touchscreen Monitor is compatible in getting a video signal from the Canon EOS C300 Mark III Digital Cinema Camera Body (EF Lens Mount).

Q: 8. Do you have data about the exact size and weight of the Ultra 5? Cannot find anything in the net.

A: The exact weight and dimensions of the Ultra 5 (SKU: 16-0527) are as follows: Weight: 504 gm (17.8 oz) Dimensions (H x W x D): 3.39 x 5.91 x 1.36 in / 86.0 x 150.0 x 34.6 mm

[9.5 x 7 x 2.5"] Just picked up my unit, and I have to admit, I'm really impressed with the quality of the display. The overall build, the buttons, and the refreshed software are all very nice improvements, which also shows how many years the 703 have served as a flagship ultrabright monitor. I'd 100% recommend the sunhood. The design is genius! Serves as great protection to the display while moving around between locations. Mine also came with a clear screen protector, which I was surprised to see as I had ordered an extra one. I did not think it would include it as my Ultra 5 did not. I managed to screw up the application of the first one, so kind of glad I had a spare to try again with.

[Yes] First off, the SmallHD PageOS operating system is by far the best I have used and is why this system is worth a significant premium over monitors with similar*cough* specs. If you need easy access to a fully customizable array of professional tools INSTANTLY, there really is nothing like it. I strongly suggest reading the full PageOS manual and also looking at some of the Exposure Tools tutorials. The fully customizable false color exposure assist that has multiple presets you can flip between is a fantastic tool worth fully exploring.

This is my third SmallHD monitor, and every one has been great. The design evolution is really obvious, and attention to the details is great. The Ultra is built like a tank and pretty heavy, so keep that in mind when chosing a mount. I use a magic-arm, or a SHAPE pushbutton monitor bracket. Don't cheap out on the mounting.

Image quality is quite good, with nice color gamut. (Note: Color has some shift in high-brightness mode, but if you need it that bright you arent judging color visually). Standard brightness mode is really really bright. More than I need in 99% of situations. High Brightness mode is visible in extremely bright conditions, like desert/beach/water, but you will still want a proper hood.
Note: the SmallHD hood is not adequate, just too small, and the open bottom for touchscreen access makes it ineffective. Considering the monitor has full physical buttons and does not NEED to be operated as a touchscreen, a full four sided soft hood would work way better.

Overall I am very satisfied.

[100% DCI-P3] Upgraded from my SmallHD 702. Such a big difference. The clarity is apparent and definitely much brighter. The UI seems faster and overall I’m in love with it. Build/image quality is A1

[100% DCI-P3] This is currently the best on-camera monitor that money can buy. Camera control works very smoothly and the monitor’s user interface is very responsive and well thought out. Touch screen is also a great feature when using the camera control functions. I was surprised to learn that a screen protector comes in the kit!

[1920 x 1080] I bought 2x for my Canon c70's, I have them paired with the Wooden Camera Hinge for the c70, the custom function buttons adds great speed to my work flow.

[LCD] When you choose SmallHD, you probably want the functionality more than the low price. So I'm not going to complain about the price.

I have both Indie 5 and Ultra 5. Unlike Indie's 1000 nits, Ultra's 3000 nits is perfect for any scenario I need. The aluminum body also helps with cooling. (The Indie has a plastic back.) If you're as curious as I was about the location of its fan, it's tucked away in that concave and convex structure on the back. You can't see it in the pictures on the site, but it's there. Indie is 1.6A, and Ultra is 2.1A. I plan to test how much more power the Ultra consumes than the Indie.

In addition, the physical buttons give it a huge improvement in operation. Physical buttons can jump to the different windows faster on set. Both monitors have a slight lag in switching windows side by side, but the Ultra's physical buttons made the lag perfectly acceptable. The other three custom buttons also work well in the new system.

The most distinctive feature of Ultra, and the biggest difference between it and Cine and Indie, is the power supply plan. Ultra is designed entirely for cinema cameras. It can only be powered by a 2-pin Lemo cable. I see a lot of complaints about the thickness of Cine and Indie. The thickness of Ultra is reduced due to being batteries-free. You also get this by around 100 grams more weight. But 100g on a cinema camera never being a problem. You know what I mean.

I hope this review helped you to make your decision.

[1920 x 1080] I have avoided Small HD because of their steep price point for quite a while. But with the recent sale I found it within reach.

This is the best monitor at this size period!

The build is solid - hard metal body with great feeling buttons and responsive controls. The image is flawless. So true to to the picture profile that I had no surprises grading at all. My AC found a ton of features that made his job easier and he ended up buying one for himself after the shoot.

SmallHD is the standard for a reason. I don't think I can go back to cheaper models with all their comprimises.

[1920 x 1080] Bought this during a B&H flash sale. It has all the good features and high NITS that you'd expect from a monitor at this price point. I like having the inputs/outputs on the bottom rather than the side. The battery plate integrates nicely on the back. If you use it with a Canon R5C as I do on occasion, you can power the monitor off a small gold mount or v-mount battery and use the power tap to power camera with a dummy battery. Will also convert HDMI in to SDI out which is useful for multi-camera setups going into the same monitor.

Niggling complaints: If light weight is important to you, this is kind of heavy compared to some other models. Also, I wish SmallHD would put their recessed anti-twist holes at the same distance as ARRI does.

[100% DCI-P3] Great little on-camera monitor especially for outdoor shooting in bright conditions. The power connection does get in the way with the camera mount so I would recommend getting the right angle version if you want to run it via dtap from your camera batteries. I'm finding the EL Zone exposure system to be a game changer, for that feature alone I highly recommend this monitor. If you own other Small HD monitors it's great to have them all setup the same, as many people have commented, the operating system is the best.
