Employing a no-holds-barred design, the Nikon F-mount ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 Lens for Nikon Fis an optically refined normal-length prime characterized by its bright maximum aperture and advanced optics for high sharpness and color accuracy. The fast f/1.4 design excels in difficult lighting conditions and is also suitable for adjusting depth of field to isolate subject matter using selective focus. A Distagon optical concept is used to promote edge-to-edge sharpness and low field curvature, and, through the use of low dispersion and aspherical elements, this lens also achieves a well-corrected image quality void of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing and aperture ranges, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Otus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable anodized metal lens barrel surface along with engraved focusing scales and distinctive high-visibility yellow paint.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides an 82.5mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.

Apochromatic optical design utilizes six anomalous partial dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 1.6' to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales, which are filled with a high-visibility yellow paint, along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens made in Germany?

A: The ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is manufactured in Japan.

Q: 2. Is this lens fully compatible with the Nikon F6 film camera?

A: For a list of compatible cameras, please visit the ZEISS website using the link below: a href= https://www.zeiss.com/camera-lenses/int/photography/content/camera-mounts.html target= _blank https://www.zeiss.com/camera-lenses/int/photography/content/camera-mounts.html/a

Q: 3. Canon focus screens

A: There are no interchangeable focus screens for the 5dmkiii. There is a focus confirmation beep with the center af point. If you have a eos1-n, 1-v, eos 3, or even a 5d up to mkii, they all accept the same screens. There is a split image/ microprism Fresnel (Ec-B) that would be helpful for those cameras; it is sold by B&H, but it is on backorder now. With 5dmkii just use af confirmation, or shoot in Live View and magnify to confirm focus. The microprism fresnel's are all in the Center anyway so it's the same deal. Wide open handheld with a figity subject is a tough. This lens is a powerful tool, but it does take a certain dedication to work with it. The results are worth the effort. Good luck!

Q: 4. Does it show visible breathing?

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses show minimal signs of breathing when used for motion capture.

Q: 5. Any body out there has used it with a Nikon Z7 ?

A: This lens would work very well when attached to the Z7 via the FTZ adapter.

Q: 6. What lens adapter do I need to use for Sony FX6 camera?

A: The ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is a manual lens. So a good Manual adapter that works with E mount cameras would be this one, https://bhpho.to/3GAsMTX .

Q: 7. I understand that the focusing screen of D810 cannot be changed. Without a central telemeter, how can one check proper focusing?

A: If you are concerned with focus on the D810, you could use the Nikon DG-2 Eyepiece, which will magnify the viewfinder by 2x: http://bhpho.to/10diQr9

Q: 8. Can anyone share their experience using the Zeiss Otus 55mm with a Canon 5DSR?

A: Yes. Works fine. Top end camera, top end lens, top end result. Use tripod, cable release etc. Any more specific question? In case you wonder, Focusingscreen dot com now has the S-type screen available for the 5Ds. Just received the first prototype of the new screen.

Q: 9. If I made an order today, is there an estimated time to receive it? Thanks.

A: If you were to order this lens today a realistic time to receive it would be 6-8 weeks.

Q: 10. How un-sealed against weather is the Otus? I have a Milvus 15/2.8, and now an Otus 28/1.4. The 50 or 55 is next, which I plan to use for landscape and astro-pano with my 810A. I don't plan to be in rainstorms or sandstorms, but the lack of weather-sealing has me a bit concerned, given its expense what was Zeiss thinking?, and the fact that I will be taking pics in marine shore and humid environments.

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses are not weather sealed. As long as the lens is not exposed directly to rain or dusty environments, there is little risk of damage. When used in high humidity conditions, care should be taken to acclimate the lens to prevent internal fogging of the elements. Storage of the lens under these conditions should be done in sealed bags using a desiccant.

[Manual Focus] I use the zeiss 55 1.4 for Videoclips and Wedding videography - also for street photography with the zacuto viewfinder. 1.4 is sharp as hell. not like other 50mm lenses that 1.4 means they are sharp at 2.2 distortion - NON - zero distortion (I've checked by shooting straight sidewalks at the end of the frame.) great colors, original and beautiful. ALOT OF vignette. and I love it. not durable in rain and dust.. so be careful with it. enjoy :)

[Manual Focus] So sharp, even when wide open, that it shows itself best on high megapixel bodies like the D800e or D810. Manual only operation makes it best suited to studio work.

[Manual Focus] This lens is amazing. After shooting it for a week the photos from other pro Nikon lenses look simply not as great. The quality and details are stunning. Yes, it's big, it's heavy, it's manual and quite expensive, but the picture quality and look is worth this spend. Using it together with my d810 I'm very close to medium format.

[4.23 lb] Sold my Leica M9 and three Lux lenses due to low hit rate. When it was on though, Wow, hard to beat the Leica glass. So, decided to try the Zeiss 55. Got it used from B&H. Saved a few hundred and the lens was essentially brand new. Have to say, this lens and a D810 is the ultimate. Much easier to focus than the range finder and this lens does not take a back seat to Leica glass. Very pleased.

[Manual Focus] I'm the lucky one for owning this gem since this February. The image quality is second to none. I was not a lover of normal lenses before, but now I definitely am. The size of this lens doesn't bother me at all(I only used other ZF lenses in the past years), and should not bother others who were used to pro zoom lenses. However, the cosmetic details are not at the same level. Just out of the box, there's a scratch on the lens cap. The marking filling of the depth of field was uneven due to some dust particles. The most obvious defect was a small area(about 0.5 x 0.5cm) of the lens shade contaminated by white painting(though I could clean it just by nail). Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I do expect a better quality control and detail from this premium price. No doubt this lens deserves five stars for its optical performance. But I wound minus half a star just because its cosmetic defects.

[Manual Focus] Despite seeing the great lab testing results and numerous stellar reviews on this lens, I still took a long time deciding to buy it..but I'm so glad I did. It arrived on a a flat, cloudy day, so it was a good situation for running it thru some tough photographic experiments in my yard. I focused on both natural and man-made objects, at varying distances, using 10 different apertures and a variety of ISO settings. When later viewing the images on my computer, I could only shake my head in wonder. What superb sharpness, color rendering and general image quality! I cannot wait to travel with the Otus 55mm and see what it can do under more ideal conditions. In short, it is easily the finest lens I have ever used, (including the Canon 300 2.8L and the Zeiss 100mm Makro).

[77 mm (Front)] This is my third Zeiss, second Otus, for my Nikon D810A. The 85/1.4 arrives tomorrow. I recently took this lens, the 28/1.4, the Milvus 15, and several Nikon and Sigma lenses, p.us an additional D810 body and tripods to the Maldives. Schlepping that much weight was not trivial, but easily worth it. I ended up using the 55 more than any of the other lenses. I had forgotten how challenging and liberating it is to see the world through a normal focal length. But other than that, there is nothing normal about this lens. As other reviewers have noted, the images OOTC look like they have already been processed. Color, clarity, and contrast produce a natural 3D effect. I have included two images I shot handheld of a small about -inch long crag next to a pool. Sun was overhead around midday, so light was flat and not flattering. My focus here is not very good, but it's good enough to illustrate the point. Zero processing other than the crop, and the JPEG quality compression. The crop is approximately 3:1, and the amount of detail is just amazing. And this is with significant image compression to get the pics small enough to upload here. Shot was 1/1250 at 4.5. In RAW, on a 4K iMac, these are something else. The cons about these lenses are well-known: size, weight, expense. Makes it a pretty easy decision for most. For me, although difficult to transport, I cannot imagine leaving any of these lenses home.

[55mm] Just received and using on a CANON 1Dx and so far photos exceptional in resolution, sharpness and color. May be the best lens at this format I have used and I will consider this combination my mini Leica S.

[4.23 lb] This lense performs as advertised. It is very sharp wide open at 1.4 with just a few small hints of CAs... but beware that it is also very hard to see the focus point with the standard optical viewfinders found in today's SLRs such as the Nikon 800s or the Canon 5D3s. This is a must lens if you work mostly near F1.4 but not so if you shoot F5.6 to F16 as the difference between this stellar piece of glass and another less expensive but premium design will quickly vaporize. The lens is way too large to use with EVF cameras like the Sony A7R and for me it is not a lens that I would use to shoot street scenes. Perfect for the studio and tripod work!
