The Tiffen 4x5" Cool Blue Hard-Edge Filterhelps to specifically add a cool, purplish-blue coloration to skies and other bright areas of an image while allowing a portion of the image to remain neutrally colored. The filter's coloring is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a hard-edged transition between the density and clear areas. The 4 color density provides less cool blue coloration than the 5 density, but more than the 3 density filter.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. It measures 4 x 5" / 101.6 x 127mm.

Note: A vertical orientation filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are the Cpkin filters in the p series 100 x 150?

A: No, they are not. The above filter, which is designed for the Cokin P-series filter holder, measures 3.3 x 3.9 (84.0 x 100.0 mm) in size. A filter measuring 100mm x 150mm in size would be too large to fit in a Cokin P-series filter holder.

Q: 2. What is the difference between the Hard and Soft GND filters?

A: The Hard GND has a more sudden transition between ND filtered and unfiltered area, intended for filtering along a clear and straight line- generally a horizon line. The soft GND transitions over a wider area, giving a less apparent effect between ND filtered and unfiltered area of an image.

Q: 3. Hi, how do I specify hard or soft graduation for this item when ordering? Thanks, Richard

A: This Lee filter would be the hard edge version. For the soft edge version of the kit, please see B&H # LENDGSS http://bhpho.to/19IlKqj.

Q: 4. What is the size of the product box (not the shipping package you send)?

A: The Lee 4x6 Graduated ND Resin Filter Set (0.3, 0.6, 0.9) comes in packaging from Lee with the following dimensions: 7.4 X 4.3 X 1 .

Q: 5. I noticed reviews on Nisi soft grad ND filters, that the transition is very long. the dark section dosn't start until very high up on the filter. The Nisi Hard edge has a smaller transition, it almost looks more comparable to a soft edge.their soft looks more comparable to a blender. dose anyone have any hands on experience with the soft edge ND vs the hard edge ND. If so is my observation true? Thanks

A: I have found the hard grad lies somewhere around the medium grads that some other companies have. Their soft has a much more gradual transition than most other companies though. I have found it to me much more forgiving than most other soft grads.

Q: 6. As far as the filters go, how do I know which one to buy. I mean this in a the sense that I am on sure which one will fit my lens and not the effect range.

A: We list most all current lenses on our website, one method would be to reference the lens there and under the specifications we post the filter thread size. As well under the Accessories tab we post compatible/recommended filters which will also designate the size. Another method is to remove the lens cap from the lens, and on the underneath side it will reference the lens' filter thread size. Or you can simply email us with and let us know which specific lens you have, and we can confirm what filter size you need for the lens. You may email askbh@bhphoto.com with your inquiry.

Q: 7. Is this the LEE Classic 100*150 sized filters?

A: The LEE 4x6 Graduated ND Resin Filter Set is 100x150mm, and are 2mm thick.

Q: 8. What is a difference between rasin filters and hard edge filters?

A: I assume you meant resin filters. Resin is the material they are made from, either resin or glass. Both work great, although resin will scratch easier, I believe they are also cheaper, but good brands like Lee Filters are excellent. Both types of filters can come either with a hard edge or a graduated edge. This refers to how quickly the shading in the filter changes from dark to clear. Hard edges work best for something like a sunset where you can but the edge exactly on the horizon, if not careful there will be a prominent line thru the shot. Graduated filters have very gradual change from shaded to clear, and will leave not noticeable line, their effect is more gradual . I hope this helps.

Q: 9. Will this work in a Tilta-MBT12?

A: No, the ARRI LMB 4x5 Rotatable Filter Stage is made specifically for the ARRI LMB 4x5 Matte-box.

Q: 10. Does this nd grad come in a soft cloth sleeve like the sets do?

A: This ND filter comes in a cordura protective pouch which is soft sided.

[Glass] This made my job of figuring out the lighting for a night scene I was shooting so much easier than when I was trying to hide the light kit. Just don’t forget to properly white balance BEFORE you put the filter on (it you’re not using presets)

[Glass] I put this filter to use almost immediately after receiving. I believe it works well for shooting night scenes in the day. Using a Sony FDR-AX53 I used to manual exposure to manipulate the video. None were corrected in an editing program. The last photo is using the camera mode on the recorder. All videos are 1080p. Taken at 2pm Dec 23, 2019. Cloudy with light rain.

[Glass] Easy to brighten a dull sky

[Glass] The day was clear and warm, and the tombstones in the cemetery were nothing special, sitting in the shade of the oak tree. But screwing on the filter of the Tiffen Cool Day for Night filter made all the difference. Not at first, of course... it seemed to be just a shade of lavender/blue through the viewfinder. But once I downloaded the picture, the dramatic shadows and the film noir quality of the blueing told me I had something special to work with. I dropped the brightness and kicked up the contrast... that's all. My first shot looked like I had been doing it for years. I repeated the action and I knew it was going to be one of my favorite filters in the bag. Yes... it's far from cheap, but it's by Tiffen. You know their quality. And it's WORTH IT.
