Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Sekonic released C800-U. I'm wondering the difference or upgrade?

A: They are changing all model numbers to include where the warranty is offered. The one with U in the end has warranty in the USA. These older options that have no letter at the end of the model number still have warranty in the USA though.

Q: 2. How much is calibration? How often is it required?

A: Gossen recommends a calibration interval of 12 to 24 months, depending on the operating conditions of the measuring device. Unfortunately we do not offer any calibration services. The recalibration takes place in the GOSSEN light laboratory on a checked and monitored optical bench. You would need to contact Gossen directly for recalibration.

Q: 3. Can Gossen MAVOSPEC measures flash light?

A: Hi,The Mavospec cannot measure flash light in a proper way, due to the long integration time. However it's capable of providing spectral data for the flash light.Normally when measuring flash light, the aim is to set a proper exposure for the cameras. For this, the Mavospec is useless. For this purpose, use e. g. a Seconic exposure meter.Tore

Q: 4. Is this meter also a light meter measuring incident and spot?

A: The main function of this meter is to measure color, but it can also provide readings in foot candles.

Q: 5. Does this meter have a function to allow the user to walk away from the device and record the highest light level?

A: In order that we may further assist you, please write telling us more about what you wish to to. prophoto@bhphoto.com.

Q: 6. Since this is a Color Meter only, do you know of a model that has both an exposure and color meter functionality in one small device? I think both the C-800 and C-700 series are color meter alone. I need both in one unit and in a rugged body unlike Lumu and other attachments.

A: I'm sorry, no, there isn't a color meter & exposure meter in one.

Q: 7. What is its Lux Resolution?

A: The Sekonic SPECTROMETER C-800 can read lux 1 to 200,000.

Q: 8. To calibrate digital cinema projectors I need a color meter that reads reflected light: is there a spot attachment for the C-800?

A: There is no spot attachment. This is designed as an incident meter. Though if you took a reflective reading, at close range off of a color neutral surface it should work.

Q: 9. Thank you for the informative video. Sekonic C-800: How to add new memory data to an existing Memory Title other than the last one in use? All new memory data seems to end on the last Memory Title in use regardless of the selection on the Memory Title folder. Selecting and/or Recalling a Memory Title doesn't work. F/W 20-11-11. The answer to this is not in User Manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A: For assistance with your inquiry concerning the Sekonic C-800 SpectroMaster Color Meter, I would recommend to contact Sekonic's Technical Support Department directly by e-mailing them at support@sekonic.com. You may also contact the manufacturer directly by phone by calling them at (914) 592-4156 during the business week, Monday ~ Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Time.

Q: 10. How much is calibration? How often is it required?

A: This meter comes fully calibrated from the factory and does not require calibration on a regular basis.

[CMOS] I got the meter a couple days ago. I started to write a review and planned to give it 3 stars for two reasons. First was the finicky touchscreen that would take several presses varying the pressure to get it to register. Second was the lame software that comes with it. For the first issue today I discovered that the touchscreen works fine if you use a fingernail or any rounded plastic thing like a pen cap. Apparently fingertips spread over too big an area and confuse it or just don't make the connection. The second issue is the software. I was expecting the software to be similar functionality as the meter screen with the options to compare plots, etc. so you could do post-processing on the computer. The software only allows you to download several graphics file formats of plots (bmp, jpeg, png) and a raw data .csv files. The .csv file allows you to do anything you want but it is a bunch of manual work to do so versus if the software was more functional. Another irritation with the software is that as far as I can tell there is no way to just download all your file from the meter memory at once. When you use the meter you need to Memory Title. You then take readings that are autmatically named. When you use the software you can select all the files under one Memory Title but you cannot select all files and download them as a batch. After solving the touchscreen issue I decided that the meter itself deserves 5 star. It is a really nice meter.

[Incident] I prefer not to fix things in post if its something that I can get right in camera. This tool helps me know EXACTLY what my color temp and tint is, which also helps me craft good color contrast in my image. This also helps me know a fixtures accuracy when choosing lights. A lot of money but with every penny!

[CMOS] This is not your average color meter. If you're working in environments with mixed lighting where color accuracy is a must, this is your instrument. Buy it while you can!

[USB 2.0 Port] I've been using it to balance fixtures for a couple of weeks now and it does exactly what I need it to.

[380 to 780 nm] Use this now daily on set to color match LED fixtures and other light sources. Works quite well and as advertised. Touchscreen takes a little getting used to, as it is not as snappy as an iPhone screen, but works great once you get the hang of it. The 4 source comparison mode and color x/y coordinate tools sure are handy. Have not had it long enough to give a full feature review. Also I soley use this for single and multicamera cinema style work, so I have not had the opportunity to try out the flash / strobe feature either.

[380 to 780 nm] Great meter if you want to get very precise with your lighting! When I Shoot interviews I like to match the color temperature of the room to avoid having to correct it later in grading. Being able to meter it exactly has not only improved my results but helped me get the proper lighting much more quickly! I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking to improve their lighting game!

[1.12 lb] I was unsure about buying a meter that was this expensive. Then, it showed up and I started using it. Holy cow. The amount of data this meter supplies is mind blowing. Yes, it is expensive, but buying a lesser model will only make you wish you bought the right one in the first place.

[Flat] Worked great for me to computer how determine how much of each color is in the spectrum. The csv file it creates is worth the price.
