The EOS RP features the RF lens mount, which support Canon's line of RF-mount lenses. This mount is characterized by its wide 54mm diameter and short 20mm flange-back distance, which promotes the ability to design lenses that are both faster and smaller than their SLR equivalents. The mount also incorporates a 12-pin electronic contact system for more sophisticated autofocus and image stabilization capabilities. This mount design also lends full compatibility to existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses via an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.

A large 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor is featured and serves as an ideal balance between high-resolution output, low-light performance, and high-speed capabilities. When paired with the DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS RP has a wide native sensitivity range from ISO 100-40000 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, continuous shooting up to 5 fps is possible for working with moving subjects.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face or Eye Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery. Additionally, the focus system is sensitive down to EV -5 for working in truly low-light conditions with accurate AF capabilities.

Designed for multimedia image-maker, the EOS RP supports UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 23.98 fps at 120 Mb/s, along with Full HD 1080p and HD 720p at 60 fps for slow motion playback. When recording in-camera, 4K video has 4:2:0 sampling and 8-bit color depth, and 4:2:2 8-bit output is possible when using an external recorder.

Audio can be recorded using the on-board stereo microphone or an optional external mic can also be used via the 3.5mm mic jack.

Also, 5-axis Dual Sensing IS can be used when recording video to electronically reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper, smoother recording.

  • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder affords a bright and clear means for eye-level viewing.

  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a vari-angle design for easier use when working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It is also a touchscreen for intuitive control over shooting, playback, and menu navigation controls.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device via the Canon Camera Connect app, which also supports geotagging your files using your mobile device's location data.

  • In-camera charging over USB is supported for easier on-the-go charging.

Extending the capabilities of the camera, Canon's EOS Webcam Utility software lets you turn your camera into a versatile webcam by just connecting it to a computer via USB. Compatible with a variety of streaming apps, including ZOOM, YouTube Live, Microsoft Teams, and more, this software also maintains the ability to record internally while livestreaming.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the SD card the only means of storage, or can the USB out save to an external drive?

A: Pictures can only be recorded to the SD card.

Q: 2. Is it good for landscape photography?

A: Yes it is. This will be a fantastic camera for landscape photography.

Q: 3. is the weather sealing as good as the 7D?

A: Yes. Just as good or maybe even better.

Q: 4. I'm very hesitant with the shooting speed of 5 fps. Any though?

A: For most casual users, the shooting speed is probably fine. If you are spending a lot of your time photographing things like sports and birds in flight, it may not be enough. But even doing those things occasionally, is probably fine as well. Unless you are already using a camera with a significantly faster shooting speed, I wouldn't worry about it.

Q: 5. does rp camera over hit for wedding videography in full HD ?

A: As far as we are aware, the EOS RP may overheat in 4K but tends to stay cooler during 1080P recording and last longer. While the camera may still overheat, Canon has not provided a recording timeframe for 4K or 1080P like they have with their R6 and R5 cameras.

Q: 6. Does this camera have manual focus?

A: Yes it does. You can see here in the manual page 214 it explains how to manual focus with the Canon RP. https://bit.ly/2ttk3fm

Q: 7. Does it shoot 25 fps in 1080? The Canon website suggests it shoots only 30 and 60 fps in 1080. But B&H spec says it can shoot 25fps. I'm confused. Is it about PAL vs NTSC? Can we get to choose pal or ntsc?

A: Look here: https://bit.ly/2SF1vbi. You will see that the RP will do 4K,1080 and 720 in 25FPS.

Q: 8. What is the difference between a normal power bank and an usb pd power supply

A: A pd power supply typically has 1 port that is an input and an output that can charge or power through the same port. It can charge a laptop or power a camera, if you have a pd with 2 ports, you can power a camera and laptop at the same time. The power bank will power a camera only. Either one will work to power a camera but the pd has added benefits as stated above.

Q: 9. What are the flash modes? Does it have HSS and wireless?

A: The EOS RP has high speed sync and wireless triggering with a Canon speedlite on the hot shoe.

Q: 10. Any issues with sensor dust? am spoiled with my Olympus m4/3 bodies.

A: To our knowledge, there have not been any issues with dust on the sensor of the EOS RP.

[1x Hot Shoe ] It’s been about a year since I moved to mirrorless. I owned a t7i and 6D. Loved the color profiles of canon so I decided to stick with the brand. I was between the RP and R. While the R is more suitable for my niche’, I found the RP for a steal. I absolutely fell in love with it. I’m getting into videography more as the time goes by and decided my next upgrade I’m going big with the R5C. While the R5C is a completely different beast of a hybrid. I still see myself using my RP daily. My camera is always attached to my neck literally so the RP is perfect size to use for a second body. For the price, you can’t lose. With some knowledge behind the RP you can definitely produce some professional grade photos. I just had my work published in Canvas Rebel with the help of the critically acclaimed underdog. I’m not sure if the image post with the information attached but if you’re interested in the iso, shutter speed etc. I’m on IG @bdlayers

[14-Bit] Before this Great camera i was using an XSI 450. I was looking to improve low light situations and better Photo quality with full frame body which the EOS RP has done exceptionally. With lens adapter and the R 24-105 lens it is very versatile.

[3:2, 4:3, 16:9] The Canon Eos Rp checks all the boxes for me. Size is perfect and fits my hand like a glove. I do not do videos so that feature is seldom used but as a still camera is outstanding.

[100%] I purchased this camera for small product stills and 360 spins along with the Canon 24-105 F4-7.1 lens. I've been very happy with this combination - it was easy to get up-to-speed and works very well in a tethered configuration. Our customers compliment us regularly on the quality of our product photos.
