In the manual, solid black boxes mean on, framed boxes with white showing through means off. Lay the manual next to the converter-on the back of the converter, the first 4 boxes are solid white in the up position for 480 AND the manual has the first 4 boxes as solid black in the up position for 480. So the rule of thumb is: Solid White boxes on the converter is the same as solid black boxes in the manual. I use 1080i59.94, so in my configuration, 1 is up, 2 and 3 are down and 4 is up. So that is 1, solid white, 2, boxed orange, 3, boxed orange and 4, solid white. In the manual, that would be 1, Solid black, 2, boxed black, 3, boxed black and 4, solid black. I hope that helps you.
