The Universal Audio Sphere LX Microphone | Modeling Miccombines a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with the Sphere LX plug-in to accurately model 20 of the most sought-after vintage microphones, including Neumann, Telefunken, AKG, and more. Auditioning and switching between mics during a session can be tedious, but thanks to the plug-in, you can change mic type, polar pattern, reduce bleed, room coloration, and even adjust the proximity effect—either during or after tracking vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, stringed and wind instruments, percussion, room sound, and more.

The Sphere LX is a dual-capsule microphone with dual outputs, custom-designed to capture the three-dimensional soundfield with exacting detail—including the directional and distance information otherwise lost with a conventional single-channel microphone. Remarkably rugged, the mic can handle in excess of 145 dB SPL before clipping and won't be damaged by high SPLs or air blasts as some vintage microphones can be. It also has a self-noise level of 10 dB-A SPL, well below most vintage microphones and comparable to many of the best modern microphones. Two XLR mic preamp inputs are needed to operate the mic with the plug-in, as all mic-modeling and other advanced DSP features occur in the Sphere LX software. Note that the mic can also be used as a standard condenser mic (no modeling) with only one XLR mic preamp required.

  • The Sphere plug-in gives you access to 20 of the most prized ribbon, condenser, and dynamic microphones ever made.
  • Get the sound of a classic 47 (with VF14 tube), 67, M49, C12, and 800 to name a few.

  • The Sphere LX plug-in (free download available separately) allows the user to change the mic type and polar pattern even after tracking.
  • Pairing the software with the Apollo audio interface greatly simplifies the process of matching the two mic-preamps required for the plug-in to work.
  • Adjustable proximity effect: eliminates the need to move a microphone solely because of too little or too much bass due to proximity effect—great for punching in a vocal where distance from the mic varies from take to take.
  • Off-axis correction: create more accurate polar patterns to reduce bleed, room coloration, and susceptibility to feedback before or after tracking.
  • Sphere supports a wide range of plug-in formats, including UAD, AAX DSP, AAX Native, VST2, VST3, and Audio Units on Mac and Windows.

  • Blend the sound of two mono mics with Sphere LX's Dual Mode and get rich-sounding mic combinations on snare drums and guitar cabs.

The Polar control lets you adjust the pickup pattern of the mic model, with the additional advantage of being able to select intermediate polar patterns that the original mic did not have. For microphones with a single pattern, the pattern control is fixed to that pattern.

Available patterns:

  • Omni, Sub-Omni
  • Wide-Cardioid, Subcardioid, Cardioid
  • Supercardioid, Hypercardioid
  • Sub-8, Figure-8

  • With Universal Audio Apollo interfaces (available separately), you can achieve extremely low latency (approx. 1.6ms round trip at 96 kHz) for seamless real-time performance.
  • The AAX DSP format allows for low-latency performance on Avid HDX systems.

  • The IsoSphere function in the Sphere LX plug-in optimizes how the Sphere LX microphone works together with commonly available isolation devices—such as the sE Reflexion Filters, Aston Halo, Kaotica Eyeball, and even vocal booths.
  • IsoSphere enhances off-axis behavior for maximum rejection and modifies frequency response to compensate for unwanted coloration, leading to even better-sounding recordings.

  • With dual, gold-sputtered diaphragms, the Sphere LX outfits your studio with a premium, large-diaphragm condenser microphone, precision-built to deliver years of inspiration for your recordings and music productions.

[Black] I've worked with many saxophone players and I played woodwind instruments. Not saying that I am an expert but I do have some experience with wind instruments. I am keyboardists with years of working with sampled saxophones. The samples have become better over the years but SWAM physical modeling is superior for duplicating the nuances and articulations of a real sax player. The only weak link is me. I need to think sax and not keyboardist when I use the SWAM plugin. My wife is a musician and when I would try to emulate a sax she would say 'that doesn't sound real'. Then I let her listen to a song with the SWAM Sax she said 'WOW, that's not you you're trying to fool me'. You won't be sorry with the SWAM Sax Virtual Instrument.

[Phantom Power] As always, my B&H shipment arrived on time. A

I travel a lot. Tracking in a treated room or the same studio is not an option. These headphones blow me away! The stereo imaging processing that is going on within the software is ridiculously useful and revolutionary. The headphone box and website do a great job at explaining how to set up everything. Just make sure the VSX plugin is the last plugin loaded on the stereo out in your DAW...and, then adjust the plugin volume.

Feels like I'm tracking or mixing through real monitors. You simply have to hear it...no, online review or YouTuber can convey the stereo field that you perceive while listening. Don't sleep on these. They have a natural flat sound without the plugin. Great for tracking. I would compare them to HD280s without the software. With the software...I feel capable tracking, mixing and mastering any project. Worth every penny!

[Phantom Power] Speakerphone 2 has been designed very carefully and very well using convolution and modeling. The sound quality is exemplary and the included samples show just how much work has been put into it. I don't think I have seen any other plugin that provides this much detail. Note: They also give you a summary of each speaker in the user guide.

[Phantom Power] So, I was on the fence about buying one these because I'd never actually owned a quality standalone preamp before and I thought the preamps on my apollo twin were already pretty good (which of course they are), but after reading through the reviews for this beast extolling it's sound I thought I'd take a chance. Man oh man am I glad that I did. Everything sounds so warm, smooth, and detailed now that I barely have to EQ my vocals. The noise floor is incredibly low and contrary to a few reviews I've read, I get plenty of headroom to work with. I really couldn't be happier with this purchase, so if you find yourself in a similar situation to where I was, I suggest just going for it.

[Polar Pattern] These babies make it easy to mix with relative accuracy while on the road. The settings work as advertised, and provide a great deal of sonic information about how your mix would fare in similar live environments. Of particular help to me was the Club setting, and the ability to toggle between moderate club interiors, and those with heavy bass. I like that Slate makes it easy to purchase the Pro kit software upgrade if you want all the settings available, but the Essentials gives you experiential simulations for EarPods, car, club, and pro studio environments, plus a flat mix setting to acclimate to between environments. To me that setting's like a palate cleanser at a wine tasting—it clears your ears so you can hear new simulated environments without rogue frequencies. My great caution is to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS first and take time to acclimate to the headphones by critically listening to a variety of familiar tracks in various environments. I chose a wide range of genres over 10 tracks to experiment with, and I'm glad I did. Great product!
