Connect to the HD3 any way you like: wirelessly or wired, digital or analog. Stream your music library, TIDAL, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, etc. to the HD3 from just about anywhere in your house (within 100') without dropouts. Wireless setup is designed for simplicity and only takes about a minute. And if you're using the HD3 on your desktop, connect it with a USB cable. The USB input bypasses your computer's built-in headphone jack for an enhanced listening experience. If you're not keen on USB or wireless, you can still use any stereo RCA or 1/8" audio cable to connect.

The HD3 is expandable, so if you want deeper bass, just connect your subwoofer.

The HD3 includes a dedicated headphone output on the front panel, so you can listen without waking the neighbors. Its headphone amplifier is designed to deliver quality sound that drives even the most demanding headphones.

The HD3 features aluminum trim accents and detachable magnetic grilles designed to blend with any décor.

Built-in power amplifiers save space and eliminate the need to connect the HD3 to a stereo receiver or external power amp. Simply plug the left speaker into a power outlet and connect the included speaker wire from the left to the right speaker. All internal components of the HD3 are designed and tuned together for a more uniform sound than traditional separate speakers and amplifier.

The speaker cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all tuned together specifically for the HD3. This is designed to provide for a more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components.

Features from the Audioengine B1 aptX HD Bluetooth receiver and D1 24-bit DAC are combined in the HD3 to help make it a complete digital audio system.

The HD3 is designed to easily connect to any of your devices that have Bluetooth, but for enhanced sound quality, use a device that supports Bluetooth aptX HD. For Apple devices that don't have aptX HD, such as the iPad or iPhone, Apple generally uses the AAC codec. It sounds good as well, and you'll get the extra benefit of the upsampling 24-bit DAC.

Through signal management circuitry and antenna tuning, the HD3 offers a solution that has up to three times the range of standard Bluetooth for multi-room use with no degradation in audio quality.

The HD3 Bluetooth receiver and USB input both utilize the PCM 5102 DAC, which is designed for low-noise and high-fidelity. The PCM 5102 is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bit, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the PCM 5102, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits – as well as the added benefit of onboard triple-redundancy power source conversion and filtering – the HD3 Bluetooth implementation presents low noise and low distortion characteristics with a noticeable improvement over other Bluetooth devices.

The HD3 contains a headphone amplifier based on the OPA2134 low-noise opamp. This amp is designed to provide low-impedance, high-fidelity audio and a 2V output, which can drive a wide range of headphones.

The amplifiers in the HD3 are located in the left speaker and are a class A/B analog monoblock design. This is a more traditional speaker/amplifier configuration, which is designed to provide quality audio and greater flexibility. All circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for enhanced mechanical shock protection.

The HD3 uses ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters are fashioned to hold up well under high power, and the edge-driven design gives a smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar-woven glass-aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is designed for strength, so the woofer can retain its shape when being driven at high levels.

The speaker drivers in the HD3s are directly magnetically shielded.

  • RCA and 1/8" audion inputs for easy connection to various audio sources, including a turntable or TV
  • USB input for computer connection with up-sampling 24-bit DAC
  • 0.75" thick MDF cabinets with wood veneer

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can these be used as computer speakers? I like a lot of bass, and currently using klipsch pro media 2.1 speakers.

A: I believe A5+ can be computer speakers because they are active speakers comes with amplifier embedded. However, they are too big if you put them next to my 27 monitor. Imagine it will looked so out of proportion with smaller monitor. I suggest you use A2+ and add a subwoofer to give better bass than A5+ can provide. A2+ will be less costly. Money saved can pay a portion of a sub. I currently use A5+ on speaker stands with a 4K TV, which put out terrible sound quality. I am an audiophile and I cannot recommend A5+ or A2+ as hifi speakers for music listening. They are just OK speakers and cost effective.

Q: 2. can i connect the speakers with a normal amplifier? if not - is it possible to turn off the build-in amp in the left speaker?

A: The A5 is not powered and its cheaper. Sounds like the option youre looking for.

Q: 3. DO I NEED A BLUETOOTH ADAPTER IF i HAVE USB ON MY LAPTOP?

A: No adapter needed. In addition to the speaker's built in Bluetooth receiver, the Audioengine A2+ can be connected to a computer's USB A port with the supplied 4.9' asynchronous USB cable or to the computer's headphone jack with the supplied 4.9' mini-jack audio cable.

Q: 4. working with limited space, 8" shelf but has 12" depth & 4ft width. can these speakers be placed on their side and still work good? also does it come with anything to decouple the speakers from a tv stand/shelf?

A: It is not recommended but sure you can do that and they will still work good. The A5+ does not come with any attachments for a stand, they are made to sit on any flat surface.

Q: 5. Does this speaker have an energy saver that delays the startup of sound? I hope not...

A: Don't know of any delay. No energy saver . We usually select music after units are turned on. Awesome speakers. Placement important for maximum enjoyment.

Q: 6. is there a material i could use to increase separation between the speakers and my tempered glass tv stand? trying to minimize vibrations. using the audio engine ds1 speaker stands ( B&H#AUADS1 ) and they work well. just looking to add an additional thin pad underneath to absorb a little more vibration

A: I recommend considering the Audioengine DS1 stands BH #AUADS1

Q: 7. Are these 16bit or 24bit DAC? I can't seem to find in the specs...

A: There is a 16bit DAC inside.

Q: 8. Can I play music off my iPhone?

A: Yes - you can plug them in directly through the headphone jack on your phone, or purchase a Bluetooth receiver.

Q: 9. Looking to put 2 of these on a shelf on my TV stand. The shelf is 8" high x 4ft wide x 1ft deep. The Audio Engine A2+ at 6" high x 4" wide x 5.25" depth Does BHPHOTO sell a very short speaker stand that I could use to decouple the speaker from the shelf, but still have it fit within the 8" high shelf? ...trying to reduce vibrations going thru the other devices on the tv stand & space is limited. cheers

A: We offer the Audioengine DS1 Desktop Stand for Small Speakers for this compatibility.

Q: 10. Is there a place to attach my record players ground wire on these speakers?

A: speakers do not require ground. All ground wires should be attached to the receiver

[9.76 lb] These are high quality speakers featuring a small size, multiple connection options, and very respectable audio quality. The manufacturer packaging is above average, and includes all necessary accessories for a quick setup. Somewhat pricey, but very satisfying overall.

[5 Kilohms] Another great product from Audioengine. This is a well designed and thought out product. Works great. Setup is simple. And they sound terrific. I knew that I might give up a little bit on the sound end with all of the speakers packaged in one box but they are very well suited to the room in which they are used and for the purposed they were purchased, i.e., quieter music in the evening or to go to sleep with. They can handle the volume and they are good on soft. The bluetooth connection was quick and simple and the sound quality is what I expected on a slightly smaller scale. (I own a pair of the A5+ speakers as well). Only minor catch is no remote that can power off the unit but I can live with this. Great product from a top-quality vendor. Can't miss.

[95 dBA] I am very pleased with this purchase. Although I am not not an audiophile expert, the overall sound across all ranges emanating from these small speakers is certainly very satisfying. Please note that the appropriate speaker stands for these speakers is the AUD-DS1. There is a larger speaker stand (AUD-DS2) for Audioengines larger sized speakers.

[2-Way] The HD3 speakers and subwoofer deliver all that I hoped for. Three different set-up connections are possible. Of these, the USB audio connection works best for me. I placed all three speakers on top of my u-shaped desk configuration. I recommend placing the subwoofer on your desk and not on the floor--it's just a 6 subwoofer and it performs best up on top and not below your desk. Good system!

[2 x Class-AB] The B&H shopping experience was top notch as usual. I had done a ton of research before deciding upon Audioengine A2+ speakers. The research seems to have paid off. I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome the speakers sound right out of the box. Some of the reviews I had read indicated a subwoofer is required to really bring out the speakers. I decided to listen to them for a few days without a subwoofer before adding one to judge for myself. While I found the bass a little flat, I felt that as computer desk speakers, they sounded great. I later added an 8 subwoofer and Holy Cow did that ever make a difference! Now the speakers sparkle accompanied by deep rich bass. I love listening to music at my desk and the Audioengine A2+ speakers (with subwoofer) makes that experience way more pleasurable. I highly recommend the speakers.
