Audio engineers and music producers seeking a refined and elegant tube-powered rack compressor/limiter will find inspiration in the Chandler Limited RS660 Compressor Matched Pair, two handmade, 19", 2 RU dynamics processors with matched circuits based on the historic EMI RS125 and Fairchild 660 compressors used at EMI's Abbey Road Studios during the 1960s. Rather than a simple reproduction, the RS660 has a meticulously fine-tuned sound built around the classic 6386 tube, resulting in a more efficient path towards the much desired characteristics of the classic 660, while also going well beyond the original in versatility and design.

The RS660 excels at taming an array of dynamic sources from sensitive vocals to explosive drums and is at home alongside the historic units from which it was hewn. There are fully stepped controls for input, output, and time constant, while the switchable modes include THD, Comp, and Limit. The rear of the unit sports a transformer-balanced XLR input and output with a 1/4" link connector for use with the included second RS660 for stereo operation, and an internal power supply sports a 250mA fuse for failsafe operation and easy placement into any studio rack—no bulky or expensive external PSUs required.

This RS660 bundle comes with two matched units that allow you to process your dynamics in immersive stereo. Simply connect the two units together with the included 1/4" TRS cable through the rear link port, and you can start creating wild, sweeping dynamic effects for everything from individual instruments to whole mixes. The matched pair is an ideal selection for mastering engineers.

For coloration without compression, the RS660's THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) mode is informed by the Chandler Limited EMI Abbey Road Studios TG1 and TG12413 Zener Limiter. When the compressor is set for THD mode, the RS660 is able to produce overdrive and distortion, including heavy to light harmonic distortion, for signal coloration sans compression or limiting.

Historically, the Fairchild 660 mono valve compressor arrived at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in 1964. The Fairchild 660 found favor with Abbey Road's recording engineers for vocals and drums and became a staple for The Beatles' records.

The Fairchild 660, which has a different vibe than the stereo 670, is highly lauded for its unique tonal quality and reactivity. The sound of the Fairchild 660 gave vocals a presence to the sound and its effect on Ringo’s drums made cymbals sound backwards. It was used for a sound and it made a statement.

[Metal] This compressor is exactly what I was looking for. Transparent, smooth, and powerful. The double-knee system is unique and sounds terrific. The auto-attack & release are so good I never turn them off. Lastly, the ability to add subtle harmonics to the output gain adds that little bit of glisten. 5

[Metal] The WA76 is not supposed to sound exactly like the modern UA 1176LN as another review has highlighted. The WA76 is an exact replica of the Urei 1176 revision D that was produced in the early 1970s. The current UA 117LN is an amalgamation of revisions C, D, & E. These revisions have minor differences in circuitry dealing with low noise and distortion. The WA76 and UA 1176LN are essentially the same beast, but since they are produced with slightly different circuitry designs, one will hear very subtle sonic variations between the two. Which one you like more is a matter of preference. 5

[Brown] I bought this compressor, at the recommendation of a friend, to level out the extreme voice volume fluctuation of my pastor. I have been extremely pleased with the result...exactly what I wanted. The pastor can now be clearly heard all throughout the chapel without me having to try and manually adjust his volume ups and downs. It takes a little time to set this up to get just the right wireless mic input into the compressor, but the result is noise free and evenly adjusted volume. On the recording, I hear no noise and the quality is excellent. I received instant comments from many worshippers on the improvement. I could not be happier!! 5

[Brown] This DI gives a sweet, warm tube tone to bass. It is extraordinarily simple in design with only one user control: output level. What is does do is produce a a vintage warmth that is very appealing and at the same time revealing of the instrument and the player. The low frequency limit is 20 Hz, not 60 Hz as mentioned in the specs here at B&H. 5

[Metal] I think this remote is better than the original that came bundled with my Roku Ultra (which I lost and had to replace). It also controls the volume on my Sony surround receiver. This model doesn't have a headphone jack, which I wasn't using anyway - the Ultra connects to Bluetooth earbuds directly - and using the Roku iPhone app for private listening sounds better anyway. Highly recommend it - can't believe this is on $20! 5

[Metal] I've been lusting after a physical LA2A for years. I actually first used one in the early 1970's in a radio station, their original market. I've tried a number of plugins, some of which aren't bad. But the weird mixture of tubes, transformers and a light bulb (panel in this case) is just hard to beat. Like all great audio gear, you may cease to notice it when it's there, but you'll truly miss it when it's not there. I have a number of wildly dynamic singers in the studio, and this just works the magic to make their vocals sit in the mix. And it makes those same vocals bigger sounding at the same time. Is it the best LA2A clone out there? I don't know since I can't test it against all the rest. But it's darn good. BTW, let me put to rest any fears about build quality, etc. This is my second (and won't be my last) piece of Warm Audio kit. Absolutely no issues with the way these beasts arrive and work. Possibly, outside of acoustic treatment, the best investment I've ever made in my studio. 5

[Metal] We are using this unit with two wireless lavalier mics used by trainers presenting in hotel ballrooms and consider it a bargain for how much performance improvement it has yielded. After watching a few YouTube videos I was able to configure some defaults for vocals and then fine tune using the meters and my ears. We have much better control now and fewer requests to make it louder but also not feed back while the person is standing in front of the PA while also making it not so loud while the presenter is shouting GET READY TO ROCK AND ROLLLLLL! or whatever at the beginning of the event. 5
