A: A WD Gold drive combines the speed and performance (for a mechanical drive) of a WD Black and the reliability and continuous uptime of a WD Red. The WD Gold series is designed for data centers, so it has a long lifespan, fast reads and writes and is capable of being on and used 24/7. These are basically the best drives offered by WD.If you need performance you can go with Black, if you need NAS type reliability and uptime, you can go with Red. I went with Gold to get the best drive I could that provided both of those features.

A: Yes, Western Digital provides an international warranty. In order to use the warranty in India, you would need to call them first to transfer the warranty coverage to India.

Q: 8. Is this a bare bones or OEM drive? I'm concerned about the warranty.

A: Its sold only as OEM, there is no retail packaging for this drive. When you get the drive register the drive on Western Digital website just as you would a retail packaged drive. The warranty is never an issue as B&H is a major retailer.

Q: 9. Are they loud and noisy or not bad? I just bought two 12TB Seagate drives for my Drobo 8D and are really clanking and making lots of noise...almost sounds like something is for sure wrong. Thanks

A: Yes, mine are also loud and clanky. My experience with most enterprise products, be it routers, switches, or hard drives, is that they don't care about noise that much -- Just performance and reliability. So I believe what you are experiencing is normal.

[12 TB] Ordered 6 12TB drives for a client's Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ and all came with no errors, are extremely fast individually and very very strong drives when benchmarked in a RAID 6 (72TB, with 43TB usable in this configuration). Was able to practically saturate a 10Gbit network connection when testing sustained read/performance). Wrote a 4GB file to the NAS from a PCI 4.0 NVME Drive and hit 1080MB/sec. All came with Firmware 1401 and was easily updated in Synology DSM to 1402. Drives are fairly quite considering their capacity and intended performance in a NAS environment. Would recommend, other than being way more expensive that non-Synology branded Drives like an equivalent Seagate IronWolf Pro, etc. but as the compatibility list grows for this new NAS, other brands might become viable/better options. 5

[12 TB] Pricey, but didn't want any issues with Synology. Long term the cost won't matter. I am a home use that utilizes the system (DS1621XS+) for photo management and workflow, surveillance, and backup not only of home system but remote work site. Attached via a 10gbe backbone with speeds greater than 600 MB/s. Couldn't be more thrilled. Purchased along with synology 12 TB hard drives (qty 6), 32GB ram, and 2 400GB NVME drives. 5

[12 TB] Everyone is aware that a large number of drives are compatible with the Synology NAS devices, but the main reason I bought the Synology drives is that they allowed firmware updates without removing them and mounting them in an external computer for update. During the startup of my new NAS there was indeed a firmware update installed on the drives. The performance specs are enterprise grade. All information I have seen says that the drives were made by Toshiba and the firmware customized by Synology. I was surprised to see a WD logo on the inside of the shippers that all four of my drives arrived in. 5

[12 TB] All you can say about a large hard drive is that it seems to work and doesn't make weird noises, right? But ultimately a few will fail, which is why I'm using them in Synology's hybrid RAID. I had four 18TB drives from another manufacturer in my desktop, and one failed in the first week, which is mostly bad luck, but ouch. 5

[12 TB] First week has pasted, so all 4 drives still good 100% up time. Seems if I have issues its either DOA or first 2 weeks I get a drive failure. 5
