SAS 2.0 is designed for backwards compatibility with SAS 1.0 and delivers a data transfer rate of 6 Gbps per physical link. The SAS 2.0 interface supports both 6 Gbps SAS 2.0 disk drives for data-intensive applications and 6 Gbps SATA drives for low-cost bulk storage of reference data. Applications can be optimized for cost/performance through the use of both SAS and SATA drive types. The enclosure includes 8 internal and 16 external 6 Gbps SAS ports connection for host and easy expansion. High-performance architecture sets new boundaries of industry performance expectations - 6 Gbps SAS (600 MBps bandwidth per physical link) 3 Gbps SATA (300 MBps bandwidth per physical link).

The expander box contains an embedded expander manager that can access via in-band SES-2 over SMP protocol and out-of band RS-232 port. An out-of-band serial port is available for managing the configuration and monitoring the expander. The expander firmware and EPLD have implemented the SES-2 protocol and disk activity map to the individual fault/activity status indicator on the backplanes. Furthermore, it has implemented autonomous chassis management of power supply status connectors and two fan monitor/speed control connectors through the SES-2 protocol. In data center environments, identifying issues with drives and environments are crucial. The hardware monitor can check system voltage and temperature. The warning message will be shown in alarm buzzer and the respective LED.

Areca presents its high performance and high reliability 6 Gbps SAS expander module for a cost-effective and enterprise-class JBOD storage enclosure. A 6 Gbps SAS expander module literally expands the number of end devices that you can connect together. Expander devices, typically embedded into an expander module to connect system backplane, support large configurations of SAS end devices, including SAS host/RAID adapters and SAS and SATA disk drives. The SAS protocol defines a mechanism that has been implemented in the SAS expanders to guarantee fair access between drives in a domain. The enclosure is ideal for 6 Gbps SAS storage systems with external interfaces and provides the benefits of increased storage capacity. The type and total amount of drives you use are based on the host interface in the server that the JBOD is connected to. Host-based RAID configuration is supported via an external SAS/Fibre/iSCSI/PCIe 2.0 to 6 Gbps SAS RAID controllers, external series 6 Gbps SAS RAID and SAS host adapters.

Related Questions and Answers

[LED Indicator] I have this connected to my TVS-472XT and and have it configured in one RAID5 x 4 array and another RAID10 x 4 array. The RAID5 array consists of 4 high-performance HDD's which I use as a backup volume to the host TVS-472XT. The RAID10 is a mix of cheaper desktop drives that I've recovered that I use for temporary storage of large files.

The TVS-472XT has had no trouble managing the multiple RAID configurations on this external device and I've have the QNAP backup manager completing nightly automatic backups to it nightly for over a year now without any connectivity issues. It really has been set-and-forget.

We are purchasing another to use with our office TVS-1272XT.

[LED Indicator] I had old 8-bay ARC-8050 (a Thunderbolt [v1]) unit from Areca. While it kept the data that I needed, during the Mac OSX BigSur shutdown it usually timed out when I wrote something to it. I wanted to change to a higher capacity and a new Thunderbolt 3 device. I got it shipped quickly directly from a third party. I checked the order of drives in the old 8-bay ARC-8050 (top one is drive #1, bottom one is drive #8); checked the order of drives in the new 12-bay Areca unit (top left is #1, top right is #6, bottom right is #12); placed drive #1 from the old unit into drive #1 in the new one, .. etc. Connected the new unit to my Mac, booted Mac and... my drive appeared... Very and painless transfer... The new unit is very fast: write is about 1600 MB/s, read about 700 MB/s (that's 8 10TB drives configured as RAID 6 [60TB disk] with about only 4TB free on disk). I'll add more drives when I have the money :-)

[1 x 220 W] I had the 8 bay TB2 and it worked super. Needed to upgrade and went for the 12 bay. It too works super. Hardware Raid is amazing. Nothing seems to slow it down. It maintains top level transfer speeds no matter what I am doing. It NEVER dips...consistent to drawer performance.

[LED Indicator] Couldn't be happier with this enclosure.

It's not perfect. It's not the newest model. But it's very well engineered still today. Having said that installing it was not simple on silicon Mac but I am reasonably IT savvy and figured it our, hint: install driver and configure as root.

I am using a MacBook Pro M2 Max on Ventura and Filled it up with WD Ultrastar 20TBs giving me 80TB usable with RAID 6. The array took about 30 hours to initialize. I am getting 1439 MB/Sec Write, and 1034 MB/Sec Read using Aja test. You could beat those numbers with RAID 5 but I want to be guaranteed to survive 2 disk failure so I am willing to sacrifice a bit of speed.

So needless to say I am pleased. Can edit 4k raw video files. I also work with large numbers of large RAW photos and the write speeds in particular are near SSD level. My laptop is very powerful and I got it working hard pushing this DAS. I put it in closet so I can't say it's loud. Can't hear the fans but can hear the drives barely, but they are loud drives.

The device is very solid and solftware is comprehensive. I am coming from OWC Thundunderbolt arrays and while they are very nice is well, this blows that totally out of the water. I also prefer hardware RAID which this has and the OWC didn't. Even with my 6 data center class drives (meaning power hungry) all on and engaged I am only getting peaks of 70 ish watts of power consumption. Idle sits at 60 ish watts and if that's a concern go with home prosumer drives like wd red which won't last as long but uses less power when idle.

[1x RJ11 UART] This is a very solid external RAID array. The hard drives install easily and were immediately recognized by the unit. Instructions are clear, and the manufacture has released a new application which makes setup and management very clear. You still have the option for the web-based GUI interface (which actually has more advanced options available).

I heard that fan noise was an issue in these units. The fan does have a temporary (15-30sec) startup at full speed, but then it quiets down quite nicely. I have the 6 bay unit, which only has one fan, so this may also be contributing to a lower overall fan noise. (That, and I have NAS drives which I selected specifically for a lower overall operating temperature.).

Overall very solid build, good speeds via the Thunderbolt 3 port, and easy interface -- a technological "hat trick."
