Get better sound from your tube microphones with the MP1S Stereo Power Supply Set from Grimm Audio. Whether you're using vintage or contemporary models, the MP1S will help you get the best possible sonic performance from your investment. The engineers at Grimm have leveraged their extensive experience designing the AD1 converter and CC1 master clock to ensure this boutique power supply takes your microphone pair to it's full potential. This S version is a rackmountable dual-channel supply set designed for use with two mics for stereo and does not include feet.

Even if the power supply for your vintage microphones is still functioning, the MP1S' stable power and exceptionally low noise floor can give you significantly improved sonic results, especially considering that the voltage settings are customized at the factory for optimal performance with your mics. The unit offers discrete voltage regulators, a shunt regulator for the anode supply and a high-precision filament supply. The anode supply offers a noise floor as low as -100 dBV, which, on average, is 20 dB better than existing supplies, while the shunt design turns the regulator into an active decoupling device, eliminating electrolytics.

The MP1S includes two multipin XLR cables that you can attach to your existing microphone cables.

  • In many classic mics, the heater voltage is also used to bias the grid of the amplifying tube in the microphone, implicating an open gateway from the heater supply to the sensitive input of the mic’s amplifying stage. Grimm therefore chose to design a clean and ultralow-noise discrete voltage regulator for the heater supply as well. It features very low drift to ensure the heater voltage always remains within specs.
  • The MP1S features a specially designed discrete shunt high-voltage regulator fed from the current source to maximize suppression from mains-induced anomalies. It also offers very low noise (typically -96 dBV or 16 uV at 20 to 20,000 Hz unweighted). More importantly, this shunt supply sounds more natural than the more commonly used modern series regulators, due to the absence of electrolytic capacitors at the output.
  • Both the high-voltage and the heater supplies have an extra crowbar protection circuit that will switch on in case one of the supplies breaks down. This is an extra line of defense to protect the valuable tube in your microphone.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used such as: mic - P1 - FetHead - recorder? I'm looking to boost a quiet mic more than the FetHead Phantom can, but then still supply phantom to a condenser mic.

A: If your recorder does not supply phantom power, the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply can help with your setup. The phantom power from this P1 power supply would pass through a Fethead Phantom, to your microphone which needs it. Please contact us at audio@bhphoto.com for more advice specific to the microphone you have, and the sounds you are trying to capture.

Q: 2. Could I use this unit directly in between Sennheiser MKH416 mic and Sennheiser G3 Plug-on transmitter to transmit audio?

A: Yes, it is possible to use the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply to connect a Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun Microphone to a Sennheiser SKP 100 G3 Plug-On Wireless Transmitter.

Q: 3. Is this a 110 ohm cable thatI can use for my GRIMM MU 1 AEB out to DAC/preamp ?

A: The Grimm Audio Stereo Pair of Audio Cables with XLR Connectors (6.56'), BH # GRSQM2X, is not impedance rated.

Q: 4. Want to mount this to a camera cage/handle somehow; any cinch sort of harness or other creative solution, perhaps with 1/4 20 mounting screws?

A: You could use straps like the Pearstone 0.5 x 12" Touch Fastener Straps (Black, 10-Pack (B&H # PES051210B) to attach the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply. As another option to use a 1/4"-20 mounting screw, you can use the Impact Super Clamp with T-Handle (B&H # IMCC106T), which comes with an Impact Standard Stud for Super Clamp with 1/4"-20 Male Threads (B&H # IMSRP102).

Q: 5. I have two 4 ohm subwoofers, can I use a xls 2002 and xls 2502 bridged without a lot problems?

A: Each of these amps will run one 4ohm subwoofer in bridged mode.

Q: 6. Whether the output can be directly inserted into the camera Mic jack to shoot video?

A: The output of this portable phantom power pack can be connected to any mic level audio input with an XLR connector, including cameras, interfaces, and audio recorders.

Q: 7. what will be the RMS wattage be with 6 ohm speakers, eg, cerwin vega xls 15 ?

A: Crown has not provided wattage ratings for 6 ohms, but they do list ratings for 4 and 8 ohms. We can use the specs listed for peak wattage to calculate RMS wattage at 4 and 8 ohms. 6 ohms is going to be right in the middle so you can get a better idea of how it would perform with your speaker. At 4 ohms, the XLS 2502 is rated at 775W per channel and 2400W bridged for peak power, which works out to approximately 550W per channel and 1700W bridged for RMS power at 4 ohms. At 8 ohms, the XLS 2502 is rated at 440W per channel and 1550W bridged for peak power, which works out to approximately 310W per channel and 1100W bridged for RMS power at 8 ohms.

Q: 8. Does the power supply accept 240V AC?

A: The included power supply for the Sony C-800G Studio Tube Condenser Microphone that we sell operates at 120V AC. You can use a step-down transformer to convert the voltage coming from a 240V AC power outlet to 120V AC.

Q: 9. Harmonic distortion is specified at 0.5%. How much greater or Is this a typo?

A: That is a TYPO. It should read 0.5% (Info from the Crown XLS 1002 Manual).

Q: 10. I am thinking of running the amps in bridged mode, can put one amp on top of the other without causing heating problems. I don't have a rack.

A: For proper venting, it would be best to leave them side by side if you don't have a rack.

[210 VDC] This item is allows me to hardwire my lavs when RF capability is unnecessary or problematic. It is mislabeled as being simply for headsets.

[210 VDC] This is a fantastic way to get either wireless or wired options using the same lavaliere microphone without having to purchase multiples, which would be far more expensive. I already owned a dual-channel wireless transmitter and a couple of AT-899 omnis, but their connectors are not XLR and their phantom power levels too feeble for use as wired mics. Using this adapter, the AT-899 can be plugged right into an XLR with phantom and used wired, which is great.

[210 VDC] The Electro Harmonix Platform Compressor is a fantastic stereo compressor pedal that works quite well. It runs on a standard 9-volt pedal power supply that it comes with. I used three of them for a live techno set I was doing. I had a Roland TR-8, Roland TB-3, and Novation Circuit all synced and running together. I had Platform Compressors on the stereo out of each piece of gear and they worked perfectly. They were very reliable but I did have a user error once which I will mention so you can avoid it. The Swell knob got bumped and my attack times began fading in completely throwing off the timing of the TB-3. I couldn't figure out what happened till after my set. So be careful to not hit this knob mid performance. To remedy this possibility, I used electrical tape to hold my knob settings in place after this incident and never had this issue again. The Platform Compressor is fantastic for the money and for the functionality. Stereo compression has never been more convenient with the Platform Compressor.

[210 VDC] Some pre-amps now a days don't have phono inputs. This device solved the problem and works great.

[Woodgrain] Best solution for boardroom projectors. Nice and powerful given the footprint. Good full range sound. Has an imbedded condenser that causes a little hiss, back off the gains and increase volume with the source equipment.

[20 W] THE vocal sound of popular music for the past 3 decades came from this mic. You can achieve great results with other mics. But this is a modern studio staple.
