Q: 1. Hi, Profoto certainly makes outstanding lighting gear but do you think their umbrellas are worth the extra cost? Is there a visual difference? How much of a difference is there between the deep and shallow Profoto umbrellas? Thanks. Paul

A: I thought that there would be no difference before I bought one, but now after using the Deep Umbrella a couple of times, I feel that it is worth the price. The light output is nice and even, with some drop off as opposed to a normal umbrella that spreads light everywhere. Plus, I have found that the deep umbrella tends to be easier to control the direction of the light since it reflects from the inside of the umbrella instead of through it, like a normal umbrella. Finally, the construction is top-notch and the fiberglass rods inside seem much more durable that the other umbrellas I already have. The outer layer is much thicker and the steel rod is rigid. Because of the heavier duty construction the unit weights a little more than a normal umbrella, but it's not that noticeable. Paired with my B1, this is a great modifier for me on the go, rather than using a Softbox that requires me assemble it. This deep umbrella pops open and attaches in seconds.

Q: 2. Why is the optional diffuser not listed in the accessories?

A: The optional diffuser is discussed within Profoto's description of the umbrella itself. It creates a softer wraparound light but loses a stop or more of light. A good investment. Profoto's gear is superb in quality, construction and performance!

Q: 3. What is the front to back depth of this when it is open?

A: It is 15 deep.

Q: 4. How long is the umbrella when it is closed? Curious if I would be able to travel with it on a plane or put in my luggage?

A: Folded length 35".

Q: 5. Will this fit on my b1?

A: Yes

Q: 6. Is this suitable and workable with the B10?

A: This is suitable for a b10.

Q: 7. Is there a diffuser available for the front of Profoto Deep Medium Umbrella (41 , Silver) B&H # PRUDMS MFR # 100987 ?

A: The diffuser for that umbrella is a href= http://bhpho.to/1BErM79. target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1BErM79./a

Q: 8. Is there a fabric to cover the front of the umbrella?

A: Yes. You can buy separately a diffuser to cover the front. I did and it is very good

Q: 9. What is the folded size of this umbrella?

A: The folded size of the Profoto 41" Deep Medium Umbrella is about 33".

Q: 10. What is the box size and how is the packing

A: What box?

[Silver] Love it! Its more efficient since it grabs more light from your bulb. More directional due to the deep parabolic design. Also it minimizes lens flare because the light is deep in the umbrella (less stray light from your strobe). Good build quality, nice case.

[Silver] Because I do a broad range of on site photography I recently purchased a set of umbrellas in various sizes made by Profoto. Though I had not used any of their products the reviews looked good but I was skeptical about the higher cost. I sometimes shoot in small locations with wood stained walls which are not desirable to bounce flash from so I started with the 33 inch white. These umbrellas were so much better made than anything that I had previously used that I decided to try replacing an old set of soft boxes with another set of Profoto's larger silver deep dish with diffusers. I now have two small white 33 deep dish, one medium silver 41 deep dish w/diffuser panel and one large silver 51 w/diffuser panel to cover various size sets and they are much more durable, better constructed and offer a nice reflection of light. The deep dish design allows for better control of light and feathering and add the diffuser to silver umbrella for an alternative to soft boxes with much quicker and easier set up/tear down and compact portability. I have used all of these umbrellas in my studio with good results and plan to carry them for on location photography. Both the umbrellas and the diffuser panels come in their own pre-labeled, individual durable protective cases and can be easily packed into your light stand case. Pricey but worth the $$.

[Metal] Meh, an umbrella is an umbrella ... or so I thought. These new Profoto Deep Umbrellas are step above.

Well made and solid feeling I suspect these will last much longer than previous umbrellas I've used. Very robust opening and locking device and the translucent material is better than others.

Expensive as usual with Profoto, but I'm learning that it's worth it in the long run.

[0.015 lb] This is a stunningly expensive translucent umbrella ... but I've grown sick of crap products failing on me ... like bent rods or torn fabric after any prolonged use. Failure is a costly factor.

So, I'm giving these a try ... and I must say the level of design, build quality and materials is what you'd expect from Profoto ... It's handling any pro spec gear ... it just feels right.

The proof will be apparent after some good use ... although I suspect more care will be exercised when handling these beautiful umbrellas given their cost ... LOL!

[Metal] This is another excellent product from Profoto, sturdy construction and most importantly, it does a great job softening the light. Highly recommended.

[0.015 lb] Yes, you can but a much cheaper umbrella from lesser brands, but this umbrella is the only one you'll ever need if you're willing to pay the price. It has fiberglass ribs and the umbrella pole is made of high-quality stainless steel. No issues if it ever gets wet. I went out to shoot images of my wife this weekend and got the best pictures I've ever gotten of her. Even she loved them which is saying a lot! Highly recommended!
