The 95mm Ice Magco Solar ND Filter 95mm 16.5 Stop Magnetic Adapterfrom Ice Magco Solar ND Filter 95mm 16.5 Stop Magnetic Adapteris an ultra-dark solid neutral density filter that reduces the exposure of the entire image area by 16.5-stops. Increasing neutral density offers finer control in available shutter speeds or aperture settings for both still and video applications. Using a longer shutter speed makes it possible to increase motion blur to convey a sense of movement, or to dial in a video camera's frame rate. Increased density also makes it possible to shoot using wider lens apertures, helping to isolate a subject from the background. This filter is made of optical glass and features a combination of 16-layer multicoating for reduced glare, plus resistance coating that resists abrasions, dust, oil, and fingerprints for easy cleaning.

The included magnetic adapter ring lets the filter be attached or removed in just seconds and allows up to four magnetic filters to be stacked. The magnetic ring accepts standard 95mm lens caps, so it can be left on the lens all the time. Up to four Ice Magco magnetic filters can be stacked. ICE Magco magnetic filters are fully compatible and interchangeable with Kase, Haida, and Marumi magnetic filter systems.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including through optical viewfinders.

A: I've researched this pretty thoroughly now. ND filters in general and the Marumi ND filters, specifically, reduce VISIBLE light by their claimed filter factors. There is no guarantee that they reduce IR or UV light by similar amounts (in fact, they do not). There are specific standards for solar (i.e. eclipse) viewing filters. ND filters generally do NOT meet these specifications. While a ND 5.0 filter does reduce visible spectra to safe limits for digital photographic purposes, you should NEVER assume them to be safe for direct viewing or viewing through the camera's optical finder. The IR and UV they may be transmitting can still be damaging to your eyes (and, potentially, to your camera, as well). A true eclipse or solar filter should include IR and UV filtration and meet the same standards as those set for eclipse viewing glasses and telescope filters.

A: I've shot extensively with the 95mm, 72mm, & 67mm versions. You don't get any cross-hatching, but a definite vignette in the corners toward the 5 stop range when shooting photos. Video is not an issue as it crops to 16:9. Other than than, negligible colour cast & no sharpness issues.

A: Yes - the only issue is that it fit on the front of whatever lens you will be using

A: NOOOO! You don't want to use a drop in filter to photograph the sun - even if it fits. You must have a filter that fits on the front of your lens to prevent heat buildup.
