Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Even with 10 GBps ethernet, no matter what RAID configuration I setup for this system, the max download speed I get is 180 MBps?

A: There are many factors that affect data rates of a given NAS setup. The Synology 60TB DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives' (5 x 12TB) data rate will depend on the RAID format you choose, the speed of your network switch, possibly your internet speeds if accessing remotely via the internet, if you add a network card to the switch, the drive's speed, the number of people accessing the NAS at a given time, the added M.2 drives/RAM, and the network connection speed of the computer that you are accessing the NAS from. All parts of the network must be up to speed to support a given data rate.

Q: 2. To connect this to a MBP M1 Max, and use it for video editing, what other components do i need?

A: The Synology DiskStation DS1821+ is a NAS, or Network Attached Storage device, so it would need to be connected to your router or network switch with an Ethernet cable. You would then access your storage from a computer or other device via the local network.

Q: 3. Is this good to use it on video editing or only to store things ?

A: This is heavily dependent on the resolution and size of the video content. If it's smaller 1080 projects the Synology 60TB DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives (5 x 12TB) could work if the content is compressed. However if you would like to work on larger codecs or resolution. I would recommend the QNAP 8 Bay Thunderbolt 3 NAS With 56TB Storage (Preconfigured In Raid 5) (QNTVS872XT88) due to the Thunderbolt direct connection.

Q: 4. Is it possible to use a 2.5gb ethernet usb adapter in one of the usb ports for improved performance over the included 1gb port?

A: No, the Synology DiskStation DS224+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure does not support USB network adapters.

Q: 5. What is a Private Cloud related to Synology DiskStation?

A: What is meant by private cloud when referring to NAS enclosures like the Synology 8TB DiskStation DS223 2-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate IronWolf NAS Drives (2 x 4TB), is that because you can set the NAS up so that it can be accessed from anywhere that you can find an internet connection, you will be able to up load to your NAS like a cloud storage service, but unlike a cloud storage service, this internet connected storage would belong to you, making it private.

Q: 6. Is the Ram upgradeable?

A: No, the Synology DiskStation DS223 2-Bay NAS Enclosure's RAM is not upgradeable.

Q: 7. Can I buy it separately and add the larger capacity disks, such as 2 x16tb?

A: Yes, the Synology DiskStation DS223 is available without drives included here: https://bhpho.to/3n6EFtx

Q: 8. Does this come with hard drives?

A: No, the Synology DiskStation DS223j 2-Bay NAS Enclosure does not include hard drives.

Q: 9. JBOD - If the Synology enclosure fails can I move the disks to a non-Synology enclosure and read the data?

A: If the Synology DS923+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure (BH #SYDS923) were to fail, you are be able to remove the hard drives and place them in another enclosure to read the data.

Q: 10. Can this be configured for Raid 5?

A: Yes, the Synology 16TB DS923+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Synology NAS Drives (4 x 4TB) can be configured for RAID 5.

[AES-NI] I went into this a little blind, and there are a lot of apps and processes to learn about and understand. But after a couple of days, I have successfully set this up to:
- keep a complete backup of my entire DropBox account
- run automatic machine backup images for several PCs and 2 Macs
- store large quantities of raw audio and video content for studio production

I'm especially pleased that backup processes send me email notices, including notices of machines that were offline and didn't get backed up.

It all feels very well managed. I like it a lot.

The drives make a fair bit of clacking noise when running hard. At first, this was resonating through my desk, the floor, and even into production spaces on the floor below. All of that was completely resolved with a simple foam pad under the NAS enclosure, the same type used for audio speaker isolation.

[22.9 dBA] Had my new NAS unpacked, filled with drives, and fully set up and syncing my important data in about 30 minutes. The Synology documentation from the official site is super useful and well written. This model has very easy access to the ram and m.2 drive slots for easy upgrades without needing disassembly.

[8.055 lb] Synology NAS devices are solid and configured correctly with m.2 cache drives and at least 7200 rpm NAS drives they run like a jet when used as a backup device or network share. You can even back them up to the Amazon's AWS backup cloud services.

[AES-NI] Putting drives in was the hardest part, after that all was easy.
Software is nice. Is it reliable? I will see in a few years.

[Synology DSM] Installed drives (No screws needed) Setup the NAS in raid 5 and all worked well.

Been running steady since I purchased it. Using it to back up Microsoft 365 and several other places.

[Synology DSM] I purchased this DS923 after using my first Synology, a DS920 , several months ago. Both were purchased through B&h. I love having control of my backup storage versus using a cloud service that costs money and is considerably slower when dealing with large files. These NAS devices can do so much more than what I use it for but it’s nice to know I can expand on how I use it in the future.

[AMD Ryzen R1600] B&H did their part flawlessly. Setting up the NAS was not as easy as i hoped it would be. looked at many youtube videos but eventually got it going. Uploading data all weekend. no problems.

[Yes] Synology is a very versatile server. It can act not just as a NAS, but as a Media Center, DNS server, DHCP server, FTP server, e-mail server, and so on, and so on.

I am very pleased with its performance so far.

[40 (Server)] All

i cant write more than what has already been written about Synology and their products. DSM is user friendly, even for a NAS newbie like me. I got things up and running within 30 - 40 mins. Plug in the HDDs, insert the additional RAM (optional, i got extra b’coz … i always like some extra RAM), connect to the router, turn on power. There are pretty gradual instructions on how to set passwords, etc. just follow the instructions and it is pretty quick. Only thing is that I couldn’t get the 2FA to work … once you set the NTP, then that works too. I am still getting up to speed on DSM and everything it can do. I even plugged in a 650VA UPS and it was detected right away. Flawless operation.

Plug in the extra RAM correctly and apply some pressure so that it ‘clicks’ into place … else it wont detect the extra RAM. After you turn on, check the system monitor if the physical RAM has been detected correctly.

The physical products are also pretty easy to use and set up. If you get 3.5” HDDs (like i did) then you dont even need screwdrivers … just ‘finger and hands’ technology. When it is working, the noise is a gentle hum. I dont have it tucked away in the attic near the router … i use a mesh router and have a point close to my ‘office’ and have it there.

The product came a day ahead of time, so no complaints there. So far it is working flawlessly and i dont expect to see it work any other way.
