Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a front and a back to the filters? Is there a specific way/ side that it needs to go on?

A: For B+W 82mm UV-Haze #010 MRC Basic Filter the front is the section that has the writing 010 UV-Haze MRC. That needs to face towards the subject, the back of the filter is what is screwed onto the lens.

Q: 2. Can you tell me the total thickness of the B+W 43mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter, please?

A: B+W 43mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter is 6.5mm thick without messuring the threads. With the threads the filter has a total height of 9.5mm.

Q: 3. How thick is the filter (the whole filter, not the glass only)?

A: The thickness of the B+W 82mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter is about 6.7mm

Q: 4. Are B+W polarizing filters water resistant? Can I use them in the surf? Will salt water damage them?

A: The B+W MRC Basic CPL filter does not have a tremendous amount of water-resistance to them. With anything, we recommend rinsing off any salt/sand/sediments off your items and devices if doused in saltwater. For a more water-repellent filter, we'd recommend the B+W Master CPL which has enhanced water-beading nano-coatings. https://bhpho.to/3ynwlZc

Q: 5. Why did they replace the 090M filter with this? What changes in specs are there. Here's old one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7762-REG/B_W_66010378_77mm_090_Light_Red.html

A: The B+W #590/090 Red Light MRC Basic Filter (77mm) is the same filter as the B+W 77mm Light Red MRC 090M Filter. B+W did a name change on that line of filters.

Q: 6. Is the light transmission on this the same as the Basic version? (99.5%)

A: Yes. The B+W UV-Haze #010 MRC MASTER Filter also has 99.95% light transmission like the B+W Basic filter has.

Q: 7. What is the thread pitch on this lens? Is it 0.5 or 0.75 mm?

A: As per the manufacturer, the thread pitch for the B+W 40.5mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC Nano 010M Filter is 0.75mm.

Q: 8. Does this filter cause vignette with 16 mm lens?

A: No.

Q: 9. Will this work with the Tamron 70-200 mm f/2.8 and the Canon 17-55 mm f/2.8 lenses?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with both of these lenses.

Q: 10. I notice the disclaimer in the Overview section that his filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size, and because of this you may be unable to attach the lens manufacturer's bayonet-mounted lens hood to the lens while using this filter. Will this filter fit on Nikon 24-120 f/4 lens with the lens hood?

A: Yes, the HB-53 lens hood that comes with the 24-120 f/4 Is a bayonet mount that doesn't have any thing to do with the filter thread. It attaches to the lens.

[Glass] No exposure degradation whatsoever, better than my old B+W filter IMO.

[0.2 lb] There are plenty of much cheaper options available, but for a filter that just does its thing and gets out of the way, I pick B+W every time.

I shoot with Zeiss Milvus lenses, and the last thing I would skimp on is what protection I put in front of those beasts. Even if it is only once where this filter does not cause a small glare when it is crucial, that's worth it. Transmission, color fidelity...it has to live up to the Zeiss glass.
The mount resists sticking if you screw another filter in, unlike the aluminum threads on many cheap offerings.

B+W has the reputation they do because they do it right. I have used their filters since the days of shooting mostly 35mm and they don't let you down, period. You get what you pay for.

[UV] Everything about this filter is first class. I know it is branded as a "basic" filter but honestly this is the filter brand all black and white contrast filters are measured by. And I know what most people are thinking. Why can't I just use software to get the same effective sky or other effect using a digital filter. You can, but a digital filter won't ever remove the UV haze or sharpen a lens by removing the blue content out of the lens. Honestly, the only time I would ever need to use a digital filter instead is for a creative option. I can shoot one frame with and one frame without if I need that option for creativity. I have plans to buy the red and deep red as well. Along with the hollywood black magic 1/4 and 1/2 filters. Schneider and their B+W brand is excellent beyond expectations. Top German filter quality.

Thanks B&H!

[77 mm] I regularly use B+W filters of all colors (but mostly orange) in my work and find them to be of the highest quality glass with the least impact on image quality, from 35mm to 4x5 and digital.

[0.2 lb] I recently bought a sony 70-200 2.8 and my biggest worry is to scratch the lens. Y always bought the expensive filter to minimize the quality of the imagen. This filter just does that.

[0.2 lb] If you have good lenses don't use cheap filters. This will cost a little more but they will honor te glass between the camera and your filter. German glass stands on its own as far as quality. This is a great filter to shoot infrared with a converted camera, but also one you can use with analog cameras to darken skies, lighten skin tomes and other effects in black and white or if shooting color in film its perfect for dramatic silueta at sunset or sunrise. With digital cameras we do a lot with White balance or in editing but used creatively its a great filter to have.
