16 high-quality, low-noise preamps are on hand right from the device, accepting inputs over XLR, TA3, and TA5 connections. These preamps outperform all previous Sound Devices pres by any measurable spec. All of them provide 3-band EQs, analog limiting, high-pass filters, adjustable delays, and phantom power.

Need 32 channels of Dante in and out? The Scorpio is equipped for that. It also handles AES I/O and gives you 12 analog outputs. Multiple headphone outs are on hand to suit any kind of situation. Even communication headsets can be accommodated.

Use the Scorpio to mix up to 12 individual buses, all in a compact form factor that works equally well in an over-the-shoulder rig or a mobile environment. With an onboard engine that makes use of three FGPA circuits and six ARM processors, the Scorpio can handle complex routing schemes, pushing audio through its 64-bit engine to ensure a high-quality sound for your demanding, in-the-field needs.

The Scorpio boasts a 256GB internal SSD for recording audio straight to the device, though two SD card slots are on hand for redundancy. Simultaneous recording is supported—though that, of course, might be redundant to say.

The accurate, onboard timecode generator boasts its own battery to hold timecode for up to four hours after you power off the device.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you mount this on a tripod then mount a camera on top? What would be the weight limit?

A: Yes you can.

Q: 2. Can I put two DSR4 receivers and control 8 channels of Audio with my Sound Devices 888?

A: Yes, you can use the Sound Devices SL-2 Dual SuperSlot Wireless Module with two Lectrosonics DSR4 Digital 4-Channel Slot Receivers and then control all 8 channels of audio using the Sound Devices 888 16-Channel / 20-Track Multitrack Field Recorder.

Q: 3. Are the outputs balanced?

A: The MixPre-6 II analog output is an unbalanced 3.5mm port.

Q: 4. How important are the 1/4-inch TRS inputs for event / wedding videographers? Is it more flexible when connecting to a DJ soundboard? Can't decide between Mixpre 3 ii or Mixpre 6 ii.

A: Hi Alex. Both 1/4" TRS and XLR connections are very common at such venues when connecting gear to/from mixing panels. The most important question is: How many inputs do you need? If you feel that you may need more than 3 inputs at 1 time, the MixPre-6 II may be a better option. Otherwise, you may need to confirm in advance of the event what cables are required based on DJ equipment, since the MixPre-3 II does not have combination jacks.

Q: 5. Mackie control universal

A: Scorpio can by controlled from the Sound Devices CL-12 linear fader controller or supported third-party external controllers that conform to the MCU protocol.

Q: 6. Is there a controller*Cl8 or Cl9*for Scorpio? Like 788T

A: There is a whole list of third party controllers that you can use, I like the most the iCON Platform M+ (with the D2 display), which is what I personally use myself. But if I could afford it, I would buy the Sound Devices CL16

Q: 7. Is there dugan automix or mix assist function?

A: Scorpio is powerful and flexible enough to accommodate both MixAssist and Dugan Automatic Mixing. These features will be available in a future firmware release.

Q: 8. Can this bag be configured to house the Zoom F6?

A: The ORCA OR-332 Audio Mixer Bag for Sound Devices Scorpio, 888, and 688 would not be recommended for the Zoom F6. From Orca, the recommended bag would be the OR-268 (B&H # OR268). The K-Tek KSF6 (B&H #KTKSF6) would also be a good choice.

Q: 9. Specs list D/A @ 115db. Is that on the 3.5mm Stereo Output &/or HeadPhone out or both?

A: This specification is for both stereo-out and headphones.

Q: 10. Howdy. Is the 1/8" aux input strictly mono (rather than stereo)? Thanks.

A: Hi David, The 1/8" AUX input is an unbalanced STEREO input. However, it is only MONO when used as a timecode source.

[32 to 256 kb/s] I'm so happy with this upgrade. The preamps are so clean.

[Audio-for-Video] I am an on again off again filmmaker and have had my hand in creative media for 17 years. I am also INCREDIBLY picky about my gear. I don't have the budget to get my dream everything, but I do research and pick the best I can for my price range. I was on the fence about this recorder since I have a Zoom H6 that has served me well. Five minutes after opening the box, all buyers remorse and trepidation melted away. This is a serious audio recording device that will up your game on any project. 32 bit float is nice, but the really nice features are the little things. Monitoring being one. The headphone preamp is leagues better than my H6. The tactile feel of the controls is buttery smooth. The metadata tagging tools are a bit cumbersome but have become essential to my process. I have thrown a lot at this little recorder and have never been let down once. Sound Devices higher end models are known as industry standard, but the MixPre is nothing to sneeze at. It will serve you well. My only real regret is not springing for the MixPre 10!

Happy recording!

[16] Buy two, you're guaranteed to lose one since you can't open the card door without removing the wireless connector.

[16 / 24-Bit] Best field recorder in this price range, and punches well above its weight in regards to sound quality, flexibility and build quality.

Used this as my main recorder for a few features and tons of small jobs in between.

Its very easy to use, the preamps are very quiet and have tons of headroom, even before you push 32bit files. Time code is rock solid and I've jammed this to an Ambient Nanolockit for 12 hours a day with no drift.

OS is very easy to navigate and the Wingman App is great. 6 inputs is very flexible for small productions and the only real thing it's "missing" would be another stereo output, but again for the size and price it evens out.

The battery life is a non-issue because there is no recorder with this much power that can reliably run off AAs; they're a backup. The upside is it runs off inexpensive USB battery banks so you can run this for 15 hours or so with a $50 battery.

It's not a replacement for an 8 series, but it would make a great backup to that unit, and it's the clear winner compared to anything from Zoom/Tascam in the price range.

[16 / 24-Bit] I just added on a Sound Devices 633 as a new mixer/recorder to my work flow. A fellow sound man insisted I check out the Sound Devices Wingman dongle and Wingman app (free download from the App Store). Honestly, I was a little bit skeptical of giving up manual control of my record function to an IOS device. But after testing it out this--simply put--it makes my job easier. When I'm carrying my bag I use an iPod Touch mounted on a Sound Guys Solutions TM-1 tablet mount to monitor levels and make audio notes on the fly. On my cart I'm using an iPad Air 2. I can't speak for everyone, but this is a game changer for me. Highly recommended.

[Stereo Only] This arrived the day I really needed it. I didn't have a lot of time to set it up or test it out before getting into the reality-style, run-n-gun production, but I didn't need long!
I plugged the USB dongle into my mixer, downloaded the app, and instantly the app detected the dongle and it was immediately working!
I changed track names, edited metadata, and monitored my levels without even reading the instructions. I never lost a step.
Two other sound guys saw this on my rig and decided to get their own - it sells itself. To be honest, I saw this on another mixer's kit and ordered mine the next day.
Great device, and very inexpensive!

[16] I really like how it cuts down on all the wires running in my bag and makes it much less cluttered.

[Stereo Only] I own the Zoom H6 recorder and when looking to upgrade I first purchased the Zoom F-6 recorder. The specs for the Zoom F-6 looked great and I liked how one could attach NP-F batteries without needing a sled adapter. But when it came time to make the initial configuration changes I encountered a user interface like something from the 1980's.

The Sound Devices has a truly intuitive interface with its color touch screen and overall configuration and settings layout and menu structure. I also liked being able to easily gang two of the pots so for stereo mics I only needed to adjust one dial to change the gain of both channels.

The primary defects in terms of its design is having the SD card slot blocked by any sled that is attached and having the On/Off switch very difficult to access when a USB-C power cable is attached.

On the plus side the USB-C port works well to power the MixPre for more than a dozen hours with a single power bank. The MixPre also has the copy to USB so a thumbdrive and collect the files from the USB-A port on the recorder.
