Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what is quality of lens, is it made of plastic or metal ??

A: Hi Khushant, The lens is made of mostly high-quality plastic but uses a metal mount. -Anthony

Q: 2. Will this lens work on an a6400?

A: Yes, the Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens can work on the Sony A6400 with a crop factor of 1.5X applied to the focal length.

Q: 3. How does it compare to the Tamron 24-75mm 2.4? Is the Tamron worth getting though it costs an extra $650 (since the FE costs $200 in bundle with the A7iii) ?

A: The continuous f2.8 throughout the zoom range is an obvious advantage over the f3.5-5.6 variable maximum aperture of the Sony lens. Nevertheless the Sony lens is a capable performer and certainly a steal for just $200 more in the A7III kit. Many think of the Tamron as a reasonable alternative to the superb but very expensive Sony 24-70mm 2.8 GM. Given the three choices, and the fact that the camera is $2000, the decision to spend an extra $650 for the Tamron is one that is extremely popular.

Q: 4. Can i use this lent on the sony a6000 in working good ??????????????

A: I believe the lens is for Sony e-mount cameras and is a full frame lens. I'm using it on a Sony A7SII and it works great.

Q: 5. Does this lens have constant aperture throughout the zoom range?

A: When the aperture is set to F5.6 or smaller (F5.6 to F22) the aperture will be constant throughout the zoom range. This lens however does not have constant aperture throughout the zoom range when wide open at F3.5.From 28mm to about 32mm* the widest possible aperture is F3.5From about 32mm* to about 40mm* the widest possible aperture is F4From about 40mm* to about 51mm* the widest possible aperture is F4.5From about 51mm* to about 64mm* the widest possible aperture is F5From about 64mm* to about 70mm* the widest possible aperture is F5.6*I am guessing about the focal lengths here as there are no markings on the lense at the exact points where the aperture changes during the zoom.

Q: 6. Does the zoom have a motorized function fort controlling the zoom. Like a lever - or is it via the ring only? Want to use for video.

A: Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens only has a mechanical zoom. You need to turn the ring to change zoom. This Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G Lens has a motorized zoom with a lever. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1697010-REG/sony_fe_pz_16_35mm_f_4.html

Q: 7. Is this lens weather sealed?

A: Yes. It's weather sealed and it fits the body well with a7. This is for daily use. Not sure if the same for some extreme situations.

Q: 8. This lens have contnuos auto focus?

A: The Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens has auto focus. The continuous auto focus would need to be set in the camera.

Q: 9. These lens work well on a nex-6 or a A6000 or is just for FE Full Frame Alpha ? If it work , works like all E-mount lens or it have some issues on Non full frame cameras ?Thanks

A: The FE 28-70mm lens will be fully compatible with both the full frame and APS-C size sensor cameras. So, you could use the lens on both the NEX-6 and A6000 without issue.

Q: 10. Can I use this lens on my NEX 5R?

A: Yes it is compatible with the NEX-5R. There will be a 1.5x crop factor.

[0.95 lb] 1. under 1' minimum focus distance - thats better than the zeiss 24-70 f4 which is 1.3'
2. 10.3 oz - thats 30% less than the zeiss
3. OSS
4. The lens protrudes and retracts only a few mm so flying this on a gimbal is no problem
5. its cheap - super cheap 2nd hand
6. it doesnt feel cheap, it doesnt feel premium but def not cheap
7. I cant tell the corners are soft but if you can then get a GM zoom or get some primes thats what they are for

[75° to 34°] The Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS was purchased as a "Start-Up" for a Sony a7RIII. It was affordable and a good lens to get you familiar with how full frame Sony's work. With Sony "Super 35" & "Zoom" it is very veristal and can get you very familiar with the a camera. Also as a base lens with a camera that has a high ISO it can come in very handy. The sharpness isn't bad at all, nice and lite, but remember it is only 3.5-5.6 and only 70mm is the max.

[f/3.5 to 5.6] Feels very cheap made, all plastic compared to my Rokinon lenses. But overall does what I need to beautifully.

[f/3.5 to 5.6] The first 28 - 70 came with my A7II... It never failed until it did after three years... The rear element broke loose... The third works just as well as the first...

I returned the second copy of this lens... It had issues with focus...

Not so with the third... It works as well as the first... The focus is fast and accurate... As with the first, no issues with distrotion, vinyetting, or C/A...

A7II, A7RII and A7II all like this lens...

Based on my experience with this lens... I can recommend it...

[55 mm (Front)] For serious work, I use my A7RIV with G or G master lenses. I was looking for a lightweight lens for my A7C for carrying when I don't plan any photos. I dug the 28-70 lens out of my collection to test. I wasn't expecting much, but I was surprised. The photo below was unedited with reduced file size for web.

[75° to 34°] I went a little legacy/manual lens crazy (50mm and 135mm Minolta MDs and Mitakon 50mm f/0.95) after purchasing my Sony A7 body recently and decided I needed to settle down and get a respectable AF/zoom/IS lens and this had good reviews and was quite reasonably priced. Imagine my surprise when this lens immediately proved itself to be way more capable than I expected. Quick to focus, nice colors, and sharper than any kit zoom has business being. I had thoughts of getting the Zeiss 24-70mm later, but that went out the window. I came from M4/3 and APS-C and this zoom lens performs close to some (some mind you) prime lenses I have used before. The IS.. OSS... really makes itself apparent in many situations in a good way. There are times where I have been on the verge of flailing to capture a fleeting candid moment that would soon pass and the hit rate has been far above near any lens I have ever owned previously. I admittedly had low expectations, but this lens has earned a permanent place in my camera bag. Also it performs phenomenally when used with the Sony HVL-F32M flash. This lens, that flash and battery grip make up my go to all purpose kit (when I will be in all kinds of lighting and conditions). I am very pleased with this purchase.
