Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this unit regulate power? I want to use this with a V-mount battery, but concerned about sending too much voltage to my MixPre-6 (original version). I can't find any power voltage specs in the MixPre owner manuals.

A: Yes, the Cable Techniques MX-POWERSLED for Sound Devices MixPre-3 And MixPre-6 sends a regulated 7.2V DC power input to the MixPre and accepts a 9-24V DC input range from external sources.

Q: 2. will this work with Mix Pre 3 II which is rated at 5V?

A: Yes the Cable Techniques MX-POWERSLED will work fine with the MixPre 3 or 6. The recorder regulates the voltage required not the battery sled.

Q: 3. Can this mount a 17x22 print?

A: You can mount a 17x22" print using the D&K 210M Commercial Dry Mounting Press - 18.5 x 23"--the actual size of the plate is 18.5x23".

Q: 4. How long does it last?

A: Thank you for your question. It will depend on size of battery and the amount of channels you are using with phantom power.

Q: 5. What is the largest print you can dry mount? How do you dry mount prints that are larger than 18 x 23?

A: I do a lot of 16x20 prints, but to do larger than that , say a 20x30, you just pass the print through the press and do it in sections. Just make sure you don't over lap the mounting tissue if it's not large enough to cover your entire size, or you will see a line in your final print.

Q: 6. If I got this for a MixPre 3 and a Hirose 4-pin to D-Tap/P-Tap cable, would I be able to power it off v-lock batteries with a D-Tap/P-Tap out? Also, If it was to be configured under a camera with v-lock power could it split and share power to both devices or is there load limits, etc?Trying to run it off a RED Raven, but also have the ability to power it separately off v-lock batteries.

A: Question #1) Yes, that should work fine. The MX-Powersled has a large input voltage range of 9 to 24 volts DC, and can accept power from any source that can be wired to the four pin Hirose DC standard, and supply the 7 to 9 watts the Mixpre 3/6 requires. I have used mine with an NP-1 cup to Hirose cable, AC adapter, as well as a car battery alligator clip cable with no problems. Question #2) There should be no issues with sharing a battery between both devices (with a commensurate decrease in overall run time). As indicated above, the Mixpre 3/6 needs about 7-9 watts to run with phantoms on all inputs, less without phantom. The Mixpre-3/6 is a fantastic piece of equipment that is extremely flexible and great sounding. Good Luck!

Q: 7. can I connect this to a usb power bank? what cable do I need?

A: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1567075-REG/anker_a1231011_powercore_slim_10000mah_portable.html?sts=pi&pim=Y This is the recommended power bank, you can use it with this adapter cable: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1353406-REG/zoom_dhc_1_dc_to_hirose_cable.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 8. Is this compatible with the newer versions of the Mix Pre series? I have one, it works well with the Mix Pre 3 v1 but doesn't seem to seat correctly on my Mix Pre 6 II

A: As a better option for the MixPre-6 II, you could use the Sound Devices MX-LMount Battery Sled (B&H # SOMXLMOUNT) which is available in stock.

Q: 9. Can someone recommend a Hirose MALE 4 pin to D-Tap cable for this? I want to power my MixPre6 with a V-mount battery.

A: The Remote Audio Anton Bauer PowerTap to 4-Pin Male Hirose DC Power Cable (BH #RECAPTAPHIR) is a great cable option to connect a D-Tap power source to the Cable Techniques MX-POWERSLED for Sound Devices MixPre-3 And MixPre-6: https://bhpho.to/3b8c7JE

Q: 10. If the MX-Powersled is attached to a Mixpre 6, will it still fit in the K-Tek Stingray bag made for the Mixpre? Or, do you need to jump up in bag size to the K-Tek Junior?

A: HiIn my case I use the Mixpre 6 with the Mx-Powersled without any problem and with enough space in the K-Tek KSTGMIX Stingray - B&H # KTKSTGMIX MFR # KSTGMIX.BRRenzo M.

[9781138491441] Sled is very well constructed and provides a nice alternative to powering your MixPre-6/3 while freeing up the USB-C port for streaming.

[Routledge] No matter your skill or experience level, John's book is a great read and guide. His writing style explains techniques in ways pretty much anyone will grasp. For the Professionals out there it has little memories that might jog you.
Enjoy and thank-you John and Ken.

[9781138491441] I have been using a pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors in my home studio for the last 20+ years, but to get decent frequency response I needed to use a 15 band graphic EQ and a Rane frequency analyzer... comes with a reference mic and a pink noise generator -- you try to adjust the EQ while watching the LEDs bounce up and down and adjust each band until the frequency response looks flat. I always had to tweak the EQ setting (maybe defeating the purpose) to make them sound more natural. Then I decided to upgrade my monitors. I went to the B&H store in NYC and listened to half a dozen, including Genelec, Yamaha, and others. I finally bought the Focal Alpha 65 EVO, which sounded the richest and yet were half the price of the Genelec 5. Bringing them home, they sounded much better with no EQ than the Reveals did with no EQ, but not as good as the EQ'd Reveals. I wanted to make sure I wasn't coloring the sound. So I bought the Sonarworks Reference 4 item. Well, it worked great. It comes with a very sturdy-looking reference mic. It was fairly easy to set up, it acquired sound points from about 36 spots in my listening area, and it took me about an hour to create a detailed frequency response curve. It has an application (and a plug in) that automatically corrects your computer's monitor sound output to flatten the speaker response. It seems to work great! The Focal monitors were fairly flat except for a peak at around 150 Hz, which the Sonarworks flattened, without having to resort to a graphic EQ. Unfortunately there's quite a bit of falloff below 100 Hz that I can measured, so beware... you will need a subwoofer with these monitors if you want to mix music. However, for general audio projects they would be a great addition to any studio.

[Soft] I'm using this with a MixPre-6 II, a Hirose-USB-C PD cable purchased off Amazon, and an Anker PD battery. As long as you research how USB-C PD delivery works, and buy/make the correct cable and correct battery, this is a great setup - IMO. I've also had success using a non-PD Ravpower battery at 9V/12V (no longer for sale), using a DIY cable. I like how I can use this device and the cable / battery of my choice. It's a solid and well built piece of gear.

[July 9, 2019] The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II is a great, compact recorder, but it eats AA batteries for lunch.

Some users power their MixPre-6 II (and MixPre-3 II) with USB power banks, but the USB connection is fragile and risks getting pulled out of place while in use. Enter the Hirose adapter.

If you’re using one of the smaller MixPre units, there’s nothing like an NP-1 or HiQ battery for getting through an entire production day, and the Hirose adapter allows for use with the proper battery cup.

The MX Powersled features solid, metal construction that snaps easily in place on the recorder. This is a great power solution for the MixPre-3/6 II recorders.

[Routledge] These sound great for the size and very well balanced. Definitely a much needed upgrade from my previous JBL monitors.

[318] Although affordable, the fits, finishes, appearance, and workmanship are exceptional for any price. After about a 20-hour break-in the sound transforms into a sound quality that rivals the very high-end professional models. Focal is definitely driving their best technology down into the models obtainable by mere mortals. The near-field tuning is the best I've heard at any price such that the voice or instrument heard from the sweet spot is a living presence that materializes in the middle of your head. A truly wonderful experience. It has a very accurate and detailed sound, including a surprising amount of bass and distortion-free treble. I was initially concerned I may need a woofer, but it is not necessary due to the strong bass profile. In fact, I barely have to touch the EQ since the default tuning is truly based on studio experience. I was also concerned that the Alpha 50 has fewer watts of output than the Alpha 60, but the Alpha 50 has more than enough power such that I can't even get the volume of my pre-amp over the 9 o'clock position. One of my best B&H purchases of all time!
