Sony C-80 Studio Condenser Microphone

Sony C-80 Studio Condenser Microphone

The C-80 from Sony is a condenser microphone designed to deliver professional-quality vocal recordings with a powerful and rich midrange along with a hint of added presence to cut through the mix. The mic’s dual-capsule design helps to reduce proximity effect and provide a consistent-sounding response, even if the vocalist moves slightly closer or further away from the mic during a take.

Great care has been taken to ensure that the mic provides sonic character and little else. The two-part metallic construction is based on the highly regarded C-800G and C-100 models and prevents acoustic vibrations, helping to keep inherent noise and unwanted sonic artifacts out of your recordings.

The large-diaphragm condenser element yields a true frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a dynamic range of more than 125.5 dB. The C-80 plays quite nicely, even with loud singers, as the capsule offers a -10 dB pad and can handle SPLs up to 138 dB. A high-pass filter is also on board to help reduce low-end rumbles and other unwanted low-end frequencies, while a suspension shockmount is included to isolate the mic from vibrations and handling noise. A carrying case is also supplied for storage and transport.

At the core of the C-80's excellent sonic character is the dual-diaphragm microphone element, which helps to minimize proximity effects for sonically consistent recordings. In addition, the cardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture at the area around the mic, reducing unwanted sound from the rear and sides.

The large-diaphragm condenser element yields a true frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a dynamic range of more than 125.5 dB. The result is a flat-frequency response that maintains detail with low signals and transients. With a high sensitivity of -30 dB/Pa, the C-80 microphone can capture subtle nuances at high frequencies with low noise levels and minimum distortion.

The C-80 microphone incorporates a two-part aluminum body that helps to prevent acoustic vibration from reaching the microphone capsule, resulting in clarity of sonic reproduction.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this mic for rap vocals or any type of music vocals??

A: This mic is great for rap vocals. It has great clarity and sound.

Q: 2. Which foam style pop filter(s) best fit this mic?

A: Hello, Thank you for contacting Samson Technologies. Our PS01 pop filter would work great in front of this microphone! If you have any other questions or inquiries, please let me know at any time. Best Regards, James

Q: 3. latency?

A: When using headphones connected directly to the C)!U Pro you will receive a mix of the direct signal that the microphone is picking up with zero latency and the return audio from your software. When direct monitoring is disabled you are hearing return of all signal from your software and latency will depend on the computer specs and settings. With the speed and efficiency of currently available processors, latency is rarely an issue.

Q: 4. Does the power supply accept 240V AC?

A: The included power supply for the Sony C-800G Studio Tube Condenser Microphone that we sell operates at 120V AC. You can use a step-down transformer to convert the voltage coming from a 240V AC power outlet to 120V AC.

Q: 5. Does it come with a case?

A: The Samson C01U will ship with a Storage Bag.

Q: 6. I purchased this mic a year ago and it has given me hollow mono sound. Am I doing something wrong?

A: The Samson C01UCW is a mono microphone. A hollow sound can be caused by several factors. Condenser mics are very sensitive, and will be affected by room reflections and reverbaration. If you are using the mic in a large room with reflective walls it may cause this type of sound. Many times just by relocation the mic or even turning it slightly may improve your sound. You can also look into purchasing a reflection filter which will effectively cut down on the amount of indirect signal to the mic. a href= http://bhpho.to/1x7rIsB target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1x7rIsB/a

Q: 7. Is, or will this mic be available in black?

A: Hello, Thank you for contacting Samson Technologies. Currently, this microphone is only available in Silver. I have not heard of any other plans to release differing colors, but will express your interest to my team! If you have any other questions or inquiries, please let me know at any time. Best Regards, James (Product Specialist)

Q: 8. Does this mic or the software CD that comes with it make this mic work with OS X 10.6?

A: I just plugged mine, didn't even bother to install the software, the mac pick it up right away, had to find it in garage band but it worked great

Q: 9. Can this be used for karoke?

A: Through a computer you could....it just becomes a mic.

Q: 10. Is there an adapter so I can plug this mic into XLR device instead of USB ?

A: The C01U Pro outputs digital audio via USB to a computer only. Unfortunately no way to adapt to XLR or other analog audio connection.

[Side Address] These are great mics, once modified mind you. Stock, they are passable, but fraught with problems. Peaks in the high-end, thin sound, etc... But with a little work by a mic mod expert, they become amazing.

[44 to 52 V] Thanks B&H for the unexpected next day shipping. The mic came in packaged well. Delivered faster than expected

I used the mic, on first listen to the raw audio I wasn't really noticing the difference from my old mic, then I processed the audio a bit and I noticed how flat my old mic sounded and how round, full, and crisp the Sony C-80 sounded.

I'm satisfied, If I ever had a reason to I would buy another, but I'd likely just get a c-100 next or maybe if things go well a C-800G

[Black] THE vocal sound of popular music for the past 3 decades came from this mic. You can achieve great results with other mics. But this is a modern studio staple.

[Unidirectional] I have little to no experience with audio equipment, and i just wanted a decent microphone to experiment with. At this price this mic fits that bill, perfectly. It is possibly the greatest mic at this price point and if you are starting out it would be a great choice for vocals, guitar, percussion etc. It records all these reasonable well. The stand adapter it comes with is kind of useless on it own so keep in mind that you might have to look for something to hold it.

[Low Cut/HPF] I've been doing voice-overs in my home studio and out in the real world for over 17 years. At home I have a MXL mic 2001, which I love. I'm starting to work on podcasts and needed a second mic. After MUCH research and reviews reading I went with this one. I'm happy to say so far, so good! It sounds just as good as my other mic - I hope it lasts as long, too! And the price/value is great also.
