The Rupert Neve Portico 542 Tape Emulator 500 Seriesfrom Rupert Neve Portico 542 Tape Emulator 500 Seriesis a single-channel 500 series rack module that simulates the sound of analog tape, and adds texture to your audio with its dedicated Silk circuitry. The emulation of tape is achieved with analog hardware, as opposed to digital processing. The 542 features a "True Tape" circuit, which utilizes an authentic magnetic record head and a replay amplifier, giving the applied audio the warmth of tape compression. Texture can be added by pushing the Silk button, selecting Red or Blue mode, and adjusting a knob. This adds harmonic content that's reminiscent of vintage Neve equipment.

Tape Effects can be added in by pressing an illuminated button. A Saturation knob enables you to dial in the amount of effects, and a Blend knob lets you mix the pre and post signals. A 15 / 30 IPS button lets you select between the emulations of those two tape-based characteristics. Two eight-segment LED meters are on the face of the 542, one dedicated to Drive, the other to Level. When your signal hits the yellow LED in the Drive meter, a Soft Clip functionality kicks in, protecting your signal from peaking. A 500-Series power supply/rack is required for operation.

[1x XLR] If this was being marketed for the Non Pro Audio home listener Market only, you'd have to pay a good bit more for this kind of detailed Headphone sound.

[10.1 x 7.8 x 3"] This came in fairly minimal packaging. All I had to do was open the cardboard box and pick it out.

I plugged it in between my television and the computer and let it record the EDID, then I plugged it between the computer and the capture card. The Blackmagic capture card which had stymied so many of my attempts to capture a 1080p signal started working the way I wanted it to after inserting this EDID emulator into the chain.

The rotary dial, by the way, was fairly resistant to accidental nudges. IT took a bit of effort to get the dial to change its position.

[1x XLR] This worked fine for end devices that don't report audio to the source. Be aware that using active cables and this device on a MAC, the mac cannot supply enough power for both. In active cable and this device is no problem

[Tape Emulator] The Rupert Neve DI shows, again, why Mr Neve deserves his reputation. This DI manages to combine astonishing clarity with a rich, lush musicality that allows breath and life into the signals it passes, making other high end DIs - including several equipped with Jensen transformers - seem somewhat pedestrian by comparison. Apart from the superior sonics, the RNDI offers flexibility, being switchable for instrument or speaker levels, allowing it to capture either the input or output signals of an instrument amplifier. Not only does it sound better than other DIs, it also offers more options than most. Last but not least, it is build very solidly. It's not as light or compact as some DIs' but it appears to be extremely robust. And it looks good as well.

[1x XLR] Stop reading this review. Just scroll to the top and buy it. The Rupert Neve RNHP headphone amp is nothing short of unbelievable. The RNHP is a desktop-sized amplifier based on the headphone amp circuitry in the 5060 Centerpiece Desktop Mixer. Technical specs aside (you can go read those elsewhere), listening experience with the RNHP is phenomenal. The longer I've been producing music, the more important I think it is to use a proper headphone amp like the RNHP to drive your headphones or in-ears. I primarily use 64 Audio A10 custom reference in-ears and the biggest thing I notice when listening through the RNHP is an amazing clarity and smoothness to the sound spectrum. Comparisons with other devices or amps leave me with this primary take-away: there is so much power with the RNHP and such a low resistance that it's able to deliver both powerful transients and amazing detail immediately following any transients. The best way I can describe it is that I feel like there's no recovery period following a strong impulse, a recovery period where there's usually a loss of detail. The RNHP is able to deliver an incredible amount of detail, distance, and depth. My life is changed.
