Responding to the demands of cinematographers, this 55mm Tiffen Black Glimmerglass Camera Filter 55mm Grade 1/2from Tiffen Black Glimmerglass Camera Filter 55mm Grade 1/2features a grade 1/2 density and is designed to take the crisp edges off the images that modern lenses and digital cameras produce. The filter subtly softens the image and lowers detail resolution for those who want to simulate the look of film footage while shooting on digital gear. This black Glimmerglass model reduces contrast and overall sharpness and can smooth out unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, or other fine details in a subject's face while keeping the general image in focus. Manufactured using ColorCore technology, the filter is designed to be accurate in its effect and to produce consistent results.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can anyone share their experience using the Zeiss Otus 55mm with a Canon 5DSR?

A: Yes. Works fine. Top end camera, top end lens, top end result. Use tripod, cable release etc. Any more specific question? In case you wonder, Focusingscreen dot com now has the S-type screen available for the 5Ds. Just received the first prototype of the new screen.

Q: 2. What extension tubes can be successfully used for this lens? Canon's do not work

A: ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is compatible with Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/300603-REG/Canon_9199A001_Extension_Tube_EF_25.html

Q: 3. Does the lens have an aperture ring or is that controlled from the camera body?

A: While you can control the aperture of the Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Nikon F Mount on the camera body, the lens does feature an manual aperture ring which allows you to manually control the aperture on older SLR and DSLR cameras.

Q: 4. Canon focus screens

A: There are no interchangeable focus screens for the 5dmkiii. There is a focus confirmation beep with the center af point. If you have a eos1-n, 1-v, eos 3, or even a 5d up to mkii, they all accept the same screens. There is a split image/ microprism Fresnel (Ec-B) that would be helpful for those cameras; it is sold by B&H, but it is on backorder now. With 5dmkii just use af confirmation, or shoot in Live View and magnify to confirm focus. The microprism fresnel's are all in the Center anyway so it's the same deal. Wide open handheld with a figity subject is a tough. This lens is a powerful tool, but it does take a certain dedication to work with it. The results are worth the effort. Good luck!

Q: 5. Any body out there has used it with a Nikon Z7 ?

A: This lens would work very well when attached to the Z7 via the FTZ adapter.

Q: 6. Will Zeiss ever introduce another Otus lens between the 28mm and 55mm focal length? I am desperate for a 35mm or 40mm Otus!

A: At this time, we do not have information on a new Zeiss Otus lens that is around 35mm. But Zeiss does have an Otus 28mm, ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF BH #ZE2814OC • MFR #2102-182 https://bhpho.to/3BkjMNN .

Q: 7. Does this lens have CPU coupling which provides aperture, program AE priority, aperture priority, shutter priority or manual exposure settings on camera models equipped with an electronic interface as my D800E ? Thank you.

A: Yes, this lens has CPU coupling, and will communicate the distance and metering. However, it will only focus manually.

Q: 8. Hi.Is the lens hood integrated or separate?Thanks.

A: The lens hood is separate and is included with the lens.

Q: 9. What lens adapter do I need to use for Sony FX6 camera?

A: The ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is a manual lens. So a good Manual adapter that works with E mount cameras would be this one, https://bhpho.to/3GAsMTX .

Q: 10. Will this lens work on the BMPCC6K? Do I need a Speedbooster?

A: Yes, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/55 ZE will work with the BMPCC6K camera. Given the APS-C format, the effective focal length of the lens is equivalent to approximately 82mm.

[Aluminum] I was worried that a 1 strength would be really glow-y the way a promist would, but you only really see an obvious glow in very strong back-lit or high contrast conditions. Otherwise it's a very a very gentle touch on highlights and overall contrast.

Also the idea that a sparkly filter inspires confidence in a model is the silliest selling point I've ever heard, and my models laughed at the idea of it ... which got me some genuine smiles, so I guess there's that.

[Aluminum] The Glimmerglass 1/2 is nice. The sharp edges are reduced but I still have detail. And being able to quickly pop off the filter for certain shots is awesome!

[0.105 lb] Adds a subtle glow and sheen to the image, really helps breath some organic life into even the most sterile digital cameras.

[Aluminum] Any time I decide on diffusion filters, the biggest considerations for me are the strength of halation and the amount of contrast I'm looking for. I usually default to Hollywood Black Magic as my standard diffusion filter. When I want something stronger and a big more vintage feeling I'll reach for Black Pro Mist. When I want something much more subtle, I'll go for Glimmerglass because the halation is under much better control than the other two. I usually aim for a 1 strength when I want to see the effect. Even then, it doesn't feel too strong.

[Glass] Works well so far, and is less obscene than even 1/4 black pro mist can be. And price is fair. Now why do these filters cost 500% more in rectangular shape?

[Glass] I was looking for a filter that would bloom the highlights and practical light sources without decreasing the overall contrast of the image, and I think this was just the filter I wanted. Compared to Black Pro Mist and especially Cinebloom, the shadow levels and sharpness are maintained with this filter. The diffusion is just enough for me. To me, it seems it blooms the highlights and light sources just enough to look like my image was shot on film, but without being too dramatic or noticeable. I think if I were going for a more dreamy look, I'd go with a higher Glimmerglass strength or use something like Cinebloom.

[55 mm] These are great little filters to add to your kit.

[55 mm] So I have used the GlimmerGlass series a lot as a large matte-box filter on the cinema cameras. But sometimes I go and shoot inserts on a lighter setup with my FX6 and a Zoom lens. For that purpose this filter is absolutely perfect. If the 1/2, 3/4 and 1/4 become available as 82mm filters I will purchase them.

[Aluminum] Great diffusion filter that adds soft contrast to take off the digital edge while retaining sharpness. Would highly recommend over other diffusion filters.
