Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are best MEMS binaural microphones to use with the Zoom F3?

A: A great binaural microphone pairing for the Zoom F3 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Field Recorder would be BH #DP4560OCBB00 DPA Microphones 4560 CORE Binaural Headset Microphone: https://bhpho.to/3NOWplz. This would need to be paired with DPA's Microdot to XLR Adapters (BH #DPDAD6001BC) for proper connection to the F3's inputs: https://bhpho.to/38nS6NH

Q: 2. When SDHC or SDXC cards are formatted in the F3, what format are they in? FAT32 or something else? I can't find this spec in the manual, just want to make sure that card can be read by a computer after removing it from the F3.

A: The format protocol implemented within the Zoom F3 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Field Recorder depends on the type of memory card used. SDHC cards are formatted using FAT 32 and SDXC cards are formatted using exFAT.

Q: 3. Does the EQ effect the overall output, or just the mic or laptop audio?

A: The EQ controls on the Radial Engineering Presenter Mixer affect the microphone signal only.

Q: 4. Can you use some hip belt rather than this neck strap for carrying this case? I think that way it could stand by itself close to body in movement, just like hip pack. If its only with neck strap connected to body than in movement if you don't hold it case can bump around, no?

A: A Porta Brace AH-2L Padded Audio Harness with Belt would be a suitable solution as it will keep your bag in place, even while on-the-run.

Q: 5. Why only one balanced audio output channel? That sharply reduces utility-four inputs with no ability to mix down to two channel recorders.

A: The JK Audio RemoteMix x4 Broadcast Field Mixer eliminates left/right panning in favor of summed mono signal mixing along with the inclusion of a headphone distribution amplifier onboard. The RemoteMix x4 is designed with specific POTS, ISDN, IP, or smartphone codec applications in mind.

Q: 6. Does the MixPre-3 fit in this bag?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-3 will fit in the PortaBrace AR-MIXPRE6 Field Audio Bag for MixPre-6 Recorder. The MixPre-6 is slightly larger than the MixPre-3. The dimensions of the MixPre-6 are 6.5 x 1.4 x 4.6" and the dimensions for the MixPre-3 are 5.7 x 1.4 x 4.3". So the bag is going to be a bit larger than required. As another options, you may prefer the PortaBrace Field Audio Bag for MixPre-3 Recorder (B&H # POARMIXPRE3) which is the same bag, but designed for the MixPre-3.

Q: 7. Can this bag fit a 15 MBP (2016/2017) or 15 Dell XPS?

A: No. I have the 15 MBP and it does not fit.

Q: 8. Is there room in this bag for the MX-LMount Battery Sled and a few L-series batteries attached?

A: Yes there is room for the battery sled and batteries to fit inside.

Q: 9. Is there any noise on the line out as it was with F6? I am thinking to use it to connected XLR mics to Canon R5.

A: We have not yet had the opportunity to test the Zoom F3 Recorder but we certainly will once it is available in stock. There are no specs listed for the noise level of the recorder's outputs, but the spec for equivalent input noise is very low at ≤-127 dBu which does aid in the recorder's ability to deliver audio with low noise.

Q: 10. How fine are the level controls for the headphones: 1 dB steps, or larger? The magnification steps for each input are shown as exponential, e.g. 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, etc. What does that translate into in dBs?

A: The headphone output of the Zoom F3 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Field Recorder is adjusted in 2dB increments.

[0.145 lb] Needed this to record the out from my OP1F/KOII into my Zoom. Had something I bought off Amazon but it was bulky and stiff and I don't like bulky ugly cables. Looks and feels like an Apple cable, love the low profile, coils up nice and compact, doesn't take up a lot of space.

[White] The most important thing for me when buying was the shielded cable. For a small price it does the job: no interference. Also not too long, not heavy, does not take up space, great design. Happy with the purchase!

[0.145 lb] Preface this: I'm an OP-1 nut. I love it. I use it. I can't get enough of it. This OP-1 Field edition is everything it says it is and more. An insane upgrade. Imagine not upgrading your iphone for 10 years and then BAM Apple drops the ultimate device. This is that device. The ultimate for what it is. And iykyk when it comes to Teenage Engineering stuff. Love it or leave it.

[0.145 lb] The Op-1 has managed to recreate a process that is immediately familiar to veteran musicians; the multitrack tape recorder. Lots of small, digital stand-alone multitrack recorders exist but, although the knobs and transport buttons remain in the traditional configuration, these devices could not seem to harness the same tactile and aesthetic feel of the real thing. The OP-1 has achieved this. The elegance of the design, both in the tactile elements AND the OLED readout have yanked the analog tradition from the jaws of the digital world. Once you learn the interface, you'll be aching to get a few minutes with the device, even if you don't have something in mind, musically. You'll just want to use it. Can't say that for most software-based recording solutions. Anyway, it's built like a tank, and has everything you need to create music, right on board; multiple synth engines, drum machines, a robust sample engine (allowing external audio, on-board mic, on-board FM radio and re-sampling), 4-track recorder, 2 mix down platters, FX and LFO, and multiple sequencers. But the simple fact is, you'll WANT to use it. This is the greatest endorsement I can think of. Well worth the price point.

[0.145 lb] Great adapter, works as intended, looks good, matches my TE6. Also has a satisfying click when you connect a cable.

[0.145 lb] The OP-1 is a legend, and it does not disappoint. I am not a musician and have little experience with music making and recording. Nevertheless, the OP-1 is immediately intelligible, and it's quick to start making great sounds. It's hugely fun. Of course, I'm sure it's an excellent professional-grade instrument, but for my uses - as someone learning something new for the pure enjoyment of it - this is a brilliant device.

Also, B&H has wonderful customer service (they sorted out a problem quickly and clearly) so I recommend buying from here.

[0.145 lb] I really like this little thing. I never had the original OP-1, so this was completely new to me. It's still taking me some time to get used to it, but there's some great tutorial videos on youtube. The sound on it is great. Really cool and unique effects. Lot's of good presets and it's easy enough to customize and save my own.

Some of the limitations, like no undo, actually make me step out of my comfort zone and work harder or come up new ways of doing things that I may not have even tried otherwise. Still, it is a little scary to record live over existing audio sometimes.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I really like the MIDI over bluetooth that lets me use it as a wireless midi keyboard and control for FL Studio on my Mac. One of the biggest things I wish was that they had more, and deeper, documentation. It only comes with a tiny little book that covers the basics of everything the synth can do (tons of typos).

[White] Wanted an OP-1 for many years. Purchased an original a few years ago just months of the surprise release of the Field. Finally upgraded to the OP-1 field and absolutely love it. The construction is phenomenal, with a very solid feel while staying familiar to the original design. The sound is great, especially the upgraded stereo signal path throughout.
I don't love the velcro circles that come pre-adhered to the bottom of the unit (in fact I immediately removed them from mine). That said it's not a deal breaker as they come off cleanly, albeit with a bit of work.
I recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade from an original OP-1, or who is considering buying one for the first time. It is a very unique machine which inspires a lot of creativity and joy.

[0.145 lb] Very happy with this new version of the OP-1 Field. There are so many improvements compared with the OG but here are my favorite features.

Sound Quality

- The OG sounded very digital/lo-fi. The Field sounds hi-fi and so much better; even all the older instruments sound great.

New Synth and Effect

- Dimension synth (traditional subtractive synth engine) was something that was missing from the OG and is a very welcome and useful addition
- Mother reverb sounds lush and phenomenal
- The old spring reverb also now sounds amazing in 32bit audio.

Connectivity

Connectivity has been significantly improved. Make all kinds of connections with other gear with the Field. Very liberating.
Here are some I have tried:

- Midi over Bluetooth both ways
- Connect Midi hardware via USB and the Field acts as a midi host; I connected my LaunchPad Pro mk3 to play Field patches with velocity sensitivity and sequence drums
- Connect an iPad over USB-C and send audio from the iPad to the OP-1sampler

- Connect a high quality USB microphone to the OP-1 and record my guitar to the tape tracks
- It really feels like a portable DAW or studio now

Build Quality
The OG was already one of the most premium and beautiful instruments I have owned but everything on the Field feels even better.
- Screen looks amazing
- Feels very solid and well put together; knobs feel good, keys are all even
- USB C port

Much of the discussion has been about the price of the Field. I agree it is very expensive. Having it in my hands and using it, it feels like a premium high-quality product. It sounds amazing and can do so much. Here is another way of thinking about it; the OP-1 Field is Teenage Engineering's flagship workstation, it just happens to be very small but very powerful.

[White] This was an impulse purchase that I wasn’t sure I would commit to but I’m glad I took the chance with this little mic. Physically, it is designed beautifully which is to be expected from TE, but I would say that this product is also built exceptionally well. Sound wise, this mic has a gorgeous range that is greatly influenced by placement/orientation. Phenomenal mic with a premium for convenience, flexibility, and design.
