Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I currently own a 12 TB Glyph Drive 7200 --how much faster would this SSD be compared to the one I own?

A: That would depend on the specific model of 12 TB 7200rpm Glyph Drive that you have, but on average, the Glyph Technologies 8TB Blackbox Plus USB 3.1 Type-C External Solid-State Drive should transfer data about twice as fast as a 7200rpm HDD.

Q: 2. If connected to Thunderbolt 4, would the transfer speed improve?

A: The transfer speeds of a USB drive such as the Glyph Technologies 8TB Blackbox Plus USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External SSD will not improve when connecting them to a higher-bandwidth port such as Thunderbolt 4. You could think of it as connecting a narrow hose to a wide hose; the amount of water coming out of the narrow hose will be the same, regardless of what it is going into.

Q: 3. can this drive be reformatted to be encrypted on a mac?

A: Yes, reformatting wouldn't be an issue. However encryption would be dependent on the specific formatting selected for the drive.

Q: 4. It says thunderbolt 3 in the description but doesnt seem to have a port?

A: Thunderbolt 3 has the same connector as USB Type C. But, speed wise, the Glymph is limited only to USB C Gen 2 speed.

Q: 5. Will the 8TB Atom EV External SSD work with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO? Although the Atom 4TB drive is on BMD's approved list, the 8TB one isn't, and I'm loathe to spend $1800 only to find it won't work.

A: Depending on the USB cable (and the length thereof), the disk format you're using, and the internals in your specific copy of this drive, you may indeed find that your specific Glyph Technologies 8TB Atom EV USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C External SSD (B&H# GLA8000EV) will work with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO (B&H# BLATEMMEI). However, especially if you record multiple video feeds then chances of compatibility will be less. For those reasons, and because the manufacturer does not recommend this option at this time, we cannot recommend this specific drive for the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO. However, you are welcome to try it to see if your copy works with your USB cable and to take advantage of our 30 day return policy: https://bhpho.to/3aPhgX2

Q: 6. Can I formate this for an iMac? Does it work with an iMac?

A: Yes, this Crucial 4TB X9 USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External SSD is compatible and does not need formatting to use with an Apple iMac.

Q: 7. What real world transfer speeds will this drive achieve?

A: Drive speed will vary on multiple factors and can vary under use conditions.

Q: 8. Is the upcoming 16TB model a single 16TB drive or a RAID?

A: The Glyph Technologies 16TB Blackbox Plus USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External SSD is a single drive and not a RAID.

Q: 9. Is there an SD Slot with this storage device or will I need a card reader for downloading ?

A: The LaCie 4TB Rugged Mini USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 External SSD does not have an SD card slot on board.

Q: 10. Does it have password protection to access data on the drive?

A: The manufacture doesn't state this drive supports encryption to add a password protection. If you would like an alternative option, I can recommend you, BH #SAMUPA2T0BAM. This model offers password protection.

[0.34 lb] Needed a small external hard drive (because of desk size) to use for my Time Machine back up. This works perfectly and was easy to set up.

[0.34 lb] The Kingston 2TB XS1000 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 External SSD has worked as advertised for about thirty days or so. I purchased for use as a backup solution in the field. The setup includes an iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 17.2), an OWC USB Type-C Travel Dock supplied by 30W Power Delivery and using its integrated USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C Cable connected to the iPhone, and Angelbird 256GB AV Pro UHS-II SDXC Memory Card, a Delkin Devices USB 3.2 CFexpress Memory Card Reader with a SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO CFexpress Card Type B, and of course, the subject of this review, the Kingston 2TB XS1000 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 External SSD. The setup works flawlessly with some observations. Transfer speeds through the described USB hub are about 400 MB/s, whereas, with the SSD plugged in directly to the iPhone, transfer speeds are about double at 800 MB/s. When the SSD is plugged directly into an Apple silicon Mac, speeds are slightly better at about 900 MB/s. The latter is closer to the manufacturer's specified speeds of 1000 MB/s. The bottom line is that the Kingston 2TB XS1000 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 is a small but mighty SSD that sits somewhere between USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gen 2 speeds. It is a great solution for use in the field.

Note: I used the standard iOS Files App to copy Canon RAW Lite and XF-AVC video files from SD and CFExpress cards. I had no issues copying and moving files around while in the field.

[Metal] Excellent value for a 2tb portable ssd drive. Paid only $109 from B&H. Love it!

[Metal] Works great with my Macs for video editing. Use Disk Utility to re-format drive for Apple, and it's plug-and-play. Bought to begin editing files on the road and finish at home. Scared by SanDisk reliability and wanted to get full use of Thunderbolt 4. Did not test speeds but it's very snappy. When expanded as in product photo, a small fan cools drive. Collapsing center turns it off and reduces size by a half-inch (to 4.0 inches) for travel.

[Bus Powered] [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this for free from Influenster in exchange for my honest review! This is my first experience with a portable SSD and I have no complaints! It’s very travel friendly and can hold a lot of data (I received the 500gb option but I know there are 1-2TB as well!). Very user-friendly and a great product for the price point. I’d definitely recommend!
