Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Where is the receptor head? Can't quite tell; it appears to be on the top vs on the front like with the 398. Do you point the receptor head at your subject?
A: Notice the white slide in the front of the meter. If you slide it to the right (the white little bump will cover the sensor) you will be in incident light mode. That is, you should stand where your subject is and point it towards where you will shoot from then take a reading. This is the most accurate method. If you move the white slide to the left (exposing the sensor) you are in the reflective mode. Here you would aim the meter at your subject from your camera position will be. This is how the light meter in a camera works. The differences in value is what your exposure compensation would be if you where using the camera's light meter.
Q: 2. Can this device be used to detect high frequency noise suppressing generators in office buildings?
A: No. The Galaxy Audio CM-170 Check Mate Series Type II SPL Meter is used to measure sound pressure levels (SPL) in decibels. It would only be able to measure the SPL of any equipment.
Q: 3. I have never used a light meter. would this meter be good for a beginner?
A: Depends on your needs. If you need to measure the brightness of a manually set flash (studio type), the L-308S-U is the place to start. The L-208 and L-398 read ambient light (sun or artificial indoor lights) and cannot read the brightness of a flash. That said, Mastering a L-208 will teach you a lot about lighting and using a meter. It will help you to learn the relationship of shutter speeds to apertures to ISO settings. And that knowledge will help make you a better photographer. It depends on how much you want to dive into the numbers of photography. That said you should check out the Classroom section of a href= http://sekonic.com target= _blank sekonic.com/a to see all kinds of articles and videos on using meters to control lighting. You can also see a demonstration of how the L-208 operates.
Q: 4. How do you rotate the unit back to 0? I mean exactly, not approximately.
A: Per the instruction book (pg 15), the device starts at 5 degrees and rotates to 360 degrees by 5 degree increments, so 0 would actually be 5 degrees (there is also a chart on pg 14).
Q: 5. Can this be attached directly to the lens without using the sliding bracket?
A: Smith-Victor Orbit Pro Series Bi-Color LED Ring Light with Battery Bundle (10") can only be connecetd to your camera and lens through the bracket. There are no threads or adapter rings to connect the lens directly on the ring ligh.
Q: 6. Could these wheels be used to replace the cast wheels on a 127VS Manfrotto dolly or do they have proprietary connectors?
A: I have the manfrotto114 mv with the wheels that came with it and it does not look easy to do. The orbit dolly that they go on is awesome purchase that and you will love it.
Q: 7. Does the camera mount pin on the top line up exactly with the tripod mount bolt on the bottom?
A: No it's a nice piece of equipment but not suited for product photography. It can be used upside down but it's not ideal.
Q: 8. Can the noise be recorded and then uploaded to a computer with the level of noise?
A: The CM-170 is a meter that measures sound pressure level. You can record audio of the noise you are measuring but the recorded audio may differ from the live audio depending on the capabilities of the microphone and recorder. If you are trying to document a noisy environment to provide proof of the high sound pressure level, like loud noise from construction work, you may want to set up a camera or use a smartphone to record video that shows you actually measuring the level on the meter and also document the time and day it is taking place.
Q: 9. Can this meter be used for very low light night shots? I have a meter in my old Mamiya Sekor 1000 DTL but I can't read it when it's too dark out, because it's a black needle (if I could get to it I would paint it with some glow in the dark paint).
A: Probably not, you are much better off with a meter that has an LCD readout with backlight. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1390250-REG/sekonic_401_305_l_308x_u_flashmate_light_meter.html
Q: 10. Can this be mounted to a tripod? The photo of the back shows what might be a tripod socket, just want to be sure.
A: There is a standard tripod socket on the bottom side of the mic.
