A: NiSi states that the filters in the NiSi 100 x 100mm Solid Neutral Density Extreme Filter Kit use their IR technology, i.e. the coating that blocks infrared light, and therefore eliminates the risk of magenta color cast.

A: I have taken a series of exposures at each stop...bright light, but needed long exposure. I didn't see any hourglass effect.

A: There is a 67mm front thread on this filter, so you can stack filters as needed. However, there is a risk of vignetting as you add more than one filter.

A: If you are ready to start using ND filters this kit is a lot more fun than using thread in filters. The image quality you will obtain is also superior compared to the quality you obtained using a thread invariable ND filter. The system is very easy to assemble and connect to your lenses.

A: Most likely, no. The rim on this filter being the variable midel, is much wider than a standard ND would be. You definitely need to find a fixed stop ND for a wide angle. Even with that, you may still have slight vignetting at the 10mm end.

Q: 8. Would these work in a matte box?

A: These filters will fit in a matte box that accepts 100mm filters that are 2mm thick.

Q: 9. When I use this filter for long exposures I get a purple haze across much of the picture. Why?

A: If I may make a wild guess and say that your viewfinder is not blocked out during your long exposures? Higher end cameras have a built in closure right next to your eyepiece that you need to close, or you will have to do it externally. You are getting a light leak through the viewfinder and it is striking your sensor. This is what happens to me when I forget to close my eyepiece off. I get the same magenta cast. As to why it is magenta, I do not know. Maybe it is because of the infrared is better at passing through the mirror?

Q: 10. Per the review of this filter by Michael, there is concern about what light is actually blocked by this filter. Does anyone know if this filter does block IV and IR?

A: I've researched this pretty thoroughly now. ND filters in general and the Marumi ND filters, specifically, reduce VISIBLE light by their claimed filter factors. There is no guarantee that they reduce IR or UV light by similar amounts (in fact, they do not). There are specific standards for solar (i.e. eclipse) viewing filters. ND filters generally do NOT meet these specifications. While a ND 5.0 filter does reduce visible spectra to safe limits for digital photographic purposes, you should NEVER assume them to be safe for direct viewing or viewing through the camera's optical finder. The IR and UV they may be transmitting can still be damaging to your eyes (and, potentially, to your camera, as well). A true eclipse or solar filter should include IR and UV filtration and meet the same standards as those set for eclipse viewing glasses and telescope filters.
