Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can you use manual focus with this lens?

A: Absolutely! as with all the e-mount lenses, you change the focus mode on the camera. I have the old NEX-7 and manual focus with the focus peaking works great with all of the lenses I have including this one.

Q: 2. What is the focal length of this lens on the Sony A-6000? Is it still 16-70 or 24-105? Thank you.

A: I think it is still 16-70

Q: 3. can i use A6000 ZOOM button or do i need to zoom manually using the ring of the lens ?

A: You have to zoom using the ring on the lens.

Q: 4. does it fit NEX FS 100?

A: Yes, this lens is fully compatible with the Sony NEX FS-100 camera.

Q: 5. Is this a prime lens?

A: No, the following is a 16-70mm zoom lens.

Q: 6. I want to use this lens on the new A6500. Can OSS function be turned off?

A: Yes, same answer as Bill. It can be turned off.Eddie

Q: 7. It says the lens has a 35mm equivalent of 24 to 105 mm, does this mean if or when used with a full 35mm frame such as on the A7S?

A: It means the lens has the same field of view on the crop sensor cameras it's designed for as a 24-105mm lens would have on a full-frame sensor.

Q: 8. What is the warranty on the zeiss 16-70

A: The 16-70mm lens comes with a one-year USA warranty from Sony. It would cover defects in workmanship and materials.

Q: 9. I bought a used version of this lens. When the zoom is retracted somewhere between 24 & 16, there's a click noise and I can feel it on the body of the lens. Is this common? It doesn't feel right to me.

A: I have been using this lens for about a year and I have to say, No. There should not be any clicking noises, unless you bought special model where they add clicking noises to all the bells and whistles.

Q: 10. Is there a lens hood available for this lens? It sure looks like it would need one. Thanks in advance.

A: The lens hood that comes with the 16-70mm lens is proprietary and replacements must be ordered through Sony directly.

[f/4] Im just a beginner and was travelling Europe for a month, after much research i purchased a A6300 and this lens. This was a awesome mix and easy to use, I used this lens 95% of the time and found the quality & pictures exceptional . I got closeups to the Swiss Alps and they all came out fantastic.  For someone that knows nothing about cameras, lens etc..works a treat. Loved it

[7, Rounded] I have owned this lens for four years, using with a A6500. I have seen reviews critical of its sharpness which surprised me. I am primarily a Canon shooter (R5 and R with solid RF L glass) and use the Sony when I seek a lighter weight kit. I felt the need to leave this review, as I wish to share my viewpoint that this lens is an incredible blend of sharpness and portability.

About a year ago, I set up a sharpness test with this lens against the following: Sony PZ 18-105 OSS F4, Sony 50mm F1.8, Canon EF 24-105 F4 Mark 2, Canon EF 85 F1.2 (both of these converted with a Metabones adapter) using the a6500 body.

Pixel peeping these images in Lightroom, I have to say that the Sony 16-70 F4 hung in there very well with sharpness across the zoom range (even at 70mm against the Canon 24-105) and across the frame.

Maybe the lesson learned here is that there is variability across the lens lot and you need to make sure you have a good copy. But I will tell you that if you do have a good copy, this lens provides great results and is such a pleasant experience in terms of weight and portability. It is great.

[Autofocus] I purchased this as the primary lens for my A6500. I liked the 16-70 focal length, when enables me to cover the standard 2 focal sets (16-35 and 24-70) with one lens. For a lightweight option, I bring this lens and the 70-300 G when I need the telephoto.

This lens is sharper in the corners than the 24-70 f/4 (which I also reviewed, but decided to return due to image quality).

[f/4] I bought this lens to go with a Sony a6000, as a light-weight alternative to my Canon 5DS R and Canon 24-105 f/4L combination, when hiking and traveling. So far I've been very happy. The resolution of the camera/lens system is about half, but so is the weight, and size is awesome. The feel of the dials is nice, and unlike every Canon lens I've ever owned, the lens hood goes on and off with the precision of a fine Swiss watch.

[Sony E] Based on the reviews I was hesitant to purchase this lens, but I’m so glad I did! It is quite sharp, focuses quickly, and is the perfect size for backpacking. Don’t believe those negative reviews, I find this lens to be a great addition to my arsenal.

[Sony E] A am delighted with this lens! I have been shooting with a Canon 70D with a 24-70 4L lens for several years with very positive results. Recently I have become somewhat frustrated by its large size. After trying the Canon M line, I made the plunge to Sony. After testing this lens on the A6000 and comparing it to my 70D kit, I have come to the conclusion that the Sony kit clearly surpasses my Canon setup concerning image quality (This might be a different story if I had the 80D with a sensor comparable to the A6000). I am delighted with the clarity of this combination and thrilled that I have a much smaller, more manageable set-up (absolutely perfect for travel). Truly wonderful lens and camera!

[83° to 23°] Ive been looking for a lens in this focal range but after reading some of the reviews I held off. I decided Id try it and I dont find the soft corners so many complain about. Plus I like having F4 thru the zoom range. It pairs very well with my a6500 and a6000. Its now sits on my a6500 and a Sony10-22 on the a6000. Together they make a very nice focal range combination for street, landscape and travel photography.

[Sony E] If you want the best IQ zoom possible stop right now and buy aSonyFE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens and a A7III. AT 4200 you will get pin sharp zoom low light and no compromise. Don't forget the Book-bag case. Now that's over if you are a parent like me with small kids or value a small light weight setup (at less than half the price, weight, and size ) than you might be interested in this lens. This is a "sharp" zoom lens for daylight (or with a flash) if you frame your shot. IE don't have to crop to much. You can get away with a 50% crop. Bottom line with this lens if you want a portrait shot frame a portrait shot if you want a eyeball shot frame a eyeball shot its a zoom after all. I have not been disappointed with its IQ this way.It has great contrast and AF. I love it because attached to my A6500 it fits in a Lowpro TLZ 20 II bag I take with me to the park etc. I can get really great framed photos and videos of the kids in daylight. I also have the Sony 35 1.8 "sharper" videos and fast auto focus low light. The Sigma 30 1.4 best IQ "pin sharp" in static shots low light and action daylight great color. With these 3 lenses I have it covered and can get sharp images all around. TheRuggardOnyx 25 case will fit the A6500, Z 16-70 with lens case and the Sony 35 1.8 lens perfectly (5.2 x 7.5 x 4.0") Hope this helps because there seems to be a lot of hate for this lens that made it hard for me to pull the trigger on it. Its a Sharp lens just don't hold it to Full Frame standards.

[Yes] I have this matched up with my a6300. For 90% of the time, this lens covers every focal range needed and provides fast, accurate autofocus and color. I do wish it had a reach over 100mm, which has been making me consider swapping this with the 18-105mmG, but overall it's extremely well-built and robust. Not the most amazing low-light performance as expected with f4, but overall I'm happy with it.
