The M4 MicTrak is designed to fuse the professional guts and features of the F-Series recorders with the convenience and portable form factor of the Handy Series. This middle road allows the M4 to provide excellent functionality at an attractive price, while remaining easy to carry to any recording scenario.

  • 32-bit floating point recording provides excellent headroom and helps to avoid clipping issues
  • High max SPL of 135 dB SPL delivers further protection against clipping for loud sound sources, such as performances, crowds, or instruments
  • Up to 18 hours of battery life for improved operating time and multiple power options, including AA battery, USB bus power, or AC adapter (sold separately)
  • Dual AD converter circuits, derived from the F-Series, make manual input gain adjustment unnecessary
  • Support for broadcast- and film-quality BWF wav format as well as iXML for inclusion of location metadata on files or IP audio streams
  • High-precision time code input support and generation with four modes (Internal Free Run, Internal Record Run, Internal RTC Run, External)
  • Easy-to-read, full-color LCD display
  • Built-in microSD card reader for storage up to 1 TB
  • Up to four channels of recording (two X/Y mic tracks and two XLR-1/4" input tracks)
  • 3.5mm TRS input for lavalier microphones

The M4 MicTrak is ideal for a wide range of portable sound recording applications from audio for video uses like filmmaking, on-site reporting, and video-based content creation, to podcasting, streaming, sound collage, and interviews. With the ability to record up to four simultaneous tracks, the M4 can also be a useful asset for musicians, providing a highly portable recording device that can capture a multi-mic, multi-track recording setup while minimizing the number of external microphones required. The USB-C connection makes it easy to both power the device and use it as a nearly pocket-sized audio interface with ultrahigh capture rates up to 192 kHz.

[24 to 32 kb/s] As a journalist, I have owned dozens of portable audio recorders over the years. The Zoom M4 MicTrak Stereo has the best combination of features of any I've owned previously.

Its long mic shape is easy to handhold for interviews. When extra mics are needed, it has two XLR connectors to record four channels. It's has 32 bit float recording, so there is no need to fiddle with level during recording. It has a mini 3.5mm mic jack; line in/ out; time code in/out. Good battery life and intuitive controls.

My only complaint - and I'm sure it will be solved soon - is there are no custom accessories for it, like a case, a furry windscreen and a tillable mic stand adapter. For now, you have to DIY. Otherwise, a great personal recorder.

[9 x 4.7 x 2.6"] Just turn this thing on and go...don't worry about levels. 32bit float is making one-person operations much more reliable without the need to monitor audio record levels. If you don't know what 32bit float means, look it up. This microphone is amazing and just works.

[9 x 4.7 x 2.6"] I previously bought and returned the first generation of this product. I guess in the attempt to make it affordable, Zoom neglected to shield the mic from interference and it picked up the local radio.

However, that issue has been fixed. I have the fixed version now and... I don't want to sound hyperbolic, but this is the best piece of audio gear I've ever used.

For on-board audio there is literally nothing better. The auto-mix doesn't sound like an auto mix.

Two examples:

I shot a trumpeter at a horse race, who began talking to the people in the crowd after he played. You could hear every word. So that's perfect sounding trumpet, followed by perfect sounding dialogue, at a 15 ft distance.

Second, I shot my 2 year old daughter's birthday. We have perfect audio of everyone singing happy birthday, and then a perfect audible pffff as she blows out the candles.

And this is the audio it outputs to the camera, not even the 32 bit float it records internally.

If you are documenting life as it is happening, this is the single best piece of gear you could get.

[9 x 4.7 x 2.6"] After Zoom issued a recall for the M2, M3 and M4 saying they identified the RF issue, I was confident in trying out the M3, and I'm glad I did! No RF issues for me yet. For my purposes, this mic is more valuable as a standalone mic than an on-camera mic. I can put it on a small desktop stand or on a boom and it essentially replaces having to run a shotgun, wire and separate recorder (F6 or F3) which saves so much time in setting up.

I recently used it for a small shoot where I placed the M3 on a small desktop tripod on a podium to record some folks speaking at an event. There were too many speakers to try to mic up individually and the PA system wasn't adequate to record from, so this was a great alternative/backup to attempting to record everyone. The problem was that one of the speakers walked off to the side, however because of the M3 Edit & Play software, I could change the directivity of the recording after the fact and it worked great!

This feature plus internal 32bit recording makes the M3 an awesome tool to add to your audio recording tool kit.

[4] Being able to turn on the mic, record, and not worry about volume levels is definitely worth the price.

[4] I use it for outdoor sound recordings and find it to be truly awesome, reasonably priced for such amazing technology.
PS: I am a seasoned engineer and don't go easily gaga for technological devices.
