50mm lens for full-frame format cameras.

The pinhole is not technically a lens, it is a clear round hole photolithographically etched on a multicoated optical glass surface. It has an effective aperture of f/161.

A pinhole sieve is a field of 523 pinholes, with the center pinhole being the largest and increasingly smaller pinholes radiating away from the center. It has an effect aperture of f/64.

A zone plate is a series of 47 clear circular rings surrounding a center hole with each of the clear zones equaling the area of the pinhole in the center, resulting in increasingly thinner zones when moving away from the center of the zone plate. It has an effect aperture of f/32.

The zone plate has a curved field of focus, creating a center sweet spot with falloff in the corners. The pinhole and pinhole sieve have much more consistent resolving power at the corners of the image than they do in the center.

The zone plate and pinhole sieve options produce more detail than the pinhole option. Raising contrast and increasing vibrance and/or saturation setting in the camera can bring a zone plate or pinhole sieve image to life.

The Obscura's pinhole, zone plate, and pinhole sieve are made up of three layers of photolithographically-applied chrome with a total thickness of 0.00014mm deposited on 1.5mm thick glass element, with a resolution of 128K dpi. This photolithography process not only makes true zone plates with excellent light transmission, but it also produces perfectly round pinholes and precision circular zone plate zones.

The glass features anti-reflective coating and can be cleaned like any camera lens, without fear of destroying any of the three imaging options.

Minimum focus distance:

  • Pinhole: 0.04" / 1mm
  • Pinhole Sieve: 9" / 228mm
  • Zone Plate: 10" / 254mm

Q: 1. Is this the type of paper you can put directly into the camera, or is it strictly for enlarger/contact sheet?

A: You can choose to expose either film or paper, or use the paper for enlarging/printing/contact sheets. It's totally up to you! With the Ilford Obscura Pinhole camera, you can use the provided 20 sheets 4x5" Ilford Multigrade IV RC Paper to make paper negatives. The pros of shooting with paper is that you can load it in a darkroom with a safelight (easier loading), but the cons are pretty significant, such as lower ASA, limited tonal reproduction, and a more difficult reprinting workflow.

Q: 2. Which Film backs are compatible with this?

A: No film back needed , you mount the 4X5 film in the box

Q: 3. Thank you Emily. One more question. When the aperture is set on lens, does the camera recognize what aperture was selected. Thank you

A: There are no electronics in our Twist 60 so most likely your camera will not recognize which aperture you are on. You can check camera compatibility here: a href= http://store.lensbaby.com/camera-compatibility/ target= _blank http://store.lensbaby.com/camera-compatibility//a

Q: 4. Will this lens with with a nikon d5300?

A: The Twist 60 was designed for full-frame cameras. Technically the Twist 60 will work on your camera model but a lot of the effect will be cropped out. Here is a comparison of a Twist 60 photograph on a full-frame and a crop sensor camera: a href= http://lensbaby.com/twist-60-full-frame-vs-crop-sensor/ target= _blank http://lensbaby.com/twist-60-full-frame-vs-crop-sensor/./a

Q: 5. I have a Nikon 7100. I see that it says works best with a full frame, obviously my 7100 is a crop sensor. Will this still work? Is it worth it? I either want to buy this and a 35 or a 50. If it's not worth it on a crop senor I'm going to buy an 80.

A: Yes, it will work, but because this lens projects a full frame image circle and an APS-C sensor only sees a cropped portion inside that image circle, most of the swirly bokeh effect will be cropped out.

Q: 6. Can you provide sample pictures taken by the twist 60.

    A: Of course. Please visit our website gallery, select Twist 60: a href= http://lensbaby.com/gallery/?galpro=product-33443&?galgen=genre-all target= _blank http://lensbaby.com/gallery/?galpro=product-33443&?galgen=genre-all/a

Q: 7. Do you need the optic swap system to use this or will it work as is with the supplied Straight Body Manual Focusing Ring?

A: The Twist 60 Optic with Straight Body will work by attaching the body to your camera. No other parts will be needed.

    Q: 8. Does it take 4 x 5 Film Holders?

A: No it does not take 4X5 holders. So far I have used it to make paper negatives by cutting RC paper into 4X5 sheets. The camera separates into two halves with the paper layed into the bottom halve. When closed the paper is held securely in place. Now that Ilford is again making direct positive papers I plan to try them soon.

Q: 9. Is the Twist 60 at all effective with a crop sensor camera, like the micro four thirds format?

A: The Twist 60 was designed for full-frame cameras. We don't recommend using it on a crop sensor camera because a lot of the twisty effect will be cropped out by your camera. Here is our Twist 60 comparison between a full-frame camera and a crop censor camera: a href= http://lensbaby.com/twist-60-full-frame-vs-crop-sensor/. target= _blank http://lensbaby.com/twist-60-full-frame-vs-crop-sensor/./a Here is a review of this optic on a crop sensor camera: a href= https://www.lifepixel.com/gear/lensbaby-twist-60. target= _blank https://www.lifepixel.com/gear/lensbaby-twist-60./a There would be even more of a crop when using a Micro 4/3 camera.

Q: 10. Will this lens work with the Olympus D-M1 II?

A: Not without an adapter. Search B&H for "Twist 60 M43"

[Full-Frame] This is the result of my first use of this lens. 50+ images & 2.5 hours later. I even consulted the documentation. I had previously watched all of the Lensbaby videos for this lens. Shot was on a tripod with macro focusing rails & macro flash. I am quite pleased with the photo. This lens will deliver if your vision suits the linear focusing that it allows. Olympus OM D EM 1 manual mode. This will not be my most used lens, but it will deliver some of my best work.

[0.705 lb] A great addition to the composer pro sweet 50 this lens is a pleasure to play with. It encourages you to be creative all the time. The tilt shift allows you to have the focus slice vertical, horizontal or diagonal according to the angle you tilt the lens. This is really easy to use and the manual focus and aperture controls are smooth. this lens has great build quality. I highly recommend it.

[Full-Frame] Lensbaby works so hard to give you contorl over focus and tilt, it's almsot a shame the Sweet 50 is so shar\p at f16. But w great lens to have in the bag when you feel like having a bit of fun.

[Full-Frame] I already own the Lensbaby Composer Pro with Sweet 35 and Edge 80 Optics. It took some practice and getting used to; but once I did, I had a lot of fun with these lenses and took some great portraits with them. I was excited to hear about the Sweet 50, as it's a great portrait focal length, especially for those with APS-C cameras like I have, so added it to my collection.Remember, this lens is completely manual, so you may need to dial-in the focal length and aperture into your camera's menu settings so they they are recorded in the resulting file's metadata; and/or carefully watch the manual focus and exposure cues in your viewfinder/LCD display. The key is to slow down. But get those right, and the results are some lovely, narrow sweet spot focus (depth of field) with deliciously smooth bokeh falling away from it. It's not in the same league as the far more expensive prime lenses out there: there are some amazing pieces of glass that can do this too. But tilt the Lensbaby lens around and things really get fun, with different areas/planes of focus with some diorama effects.

[0] I just recently got into pinhole photography. The LensBaby Obscura 50 is a very well made tool that allows for a lot of creativity and fun.

[Manual Focus] The slice of focus is exactly the type of effect I was looking for in a tilt lens. I tried the Double Glass and it's not nearly as pronounced as the Edge 50. It's a super fun lens to use and forces you to slow down and master the tilt effect with manual focus. Highly recommended! Also, it's much more convenient to have a built in aperture instead of the magnetic disks. Works with all of Lensbaby's Composer tilt systems.

[0] I use my Sweet 50 on a Scout body to do tabletop photography and have tried both #1 and #2 close up lenses with it for close work. Both combinations work well. I like the Sweet 35 also but the 50 gives me better separation from the b'ground. With the manual focus magnifier of my Pentax K-3 it works great.

[0.705 lb] Great Fun Lens - I wasn't sure if I would use this lens much, but I took it out to the park and love it. It's a fun lens and let's you get creative.
