The Novation Bass Station II Monophonic Synthesizerfrom Novation Bass Station II Monophonic Synthesizeris a 25-key synthesizer with assignable aftertouch that, while designed for bass synth sounds, is also capable of leads and arpeggiated performance. It features two analog oscillators and a third sub-octave oscillator. The tones its oscillators produce can be modulated, shaped, and altered by the Bass Station II's Classic and Acid filters, dual ADSR envelope generators, 2 LFOs, and analog distortion.

The synth has a built-in arpeggiators with 32 different patterns and a 1 to 4 octave range. The step sequencer provides another playing style with up to 4 different sequences. The Bass Station II's front-panel controls give you hands on access to all of the synth's editable parameters. Your edits and self-created patches can be saved to the 64 user patches for fast recall.

You can easily turn your Bass Station II into an AFX Station with the v4.14 firmware update (free download available separately). Developed in collaboration with electronic music legend Aphex Twin (Richard James), the AFX mode enables you to assign a discrete set of synthesis parameters to each note on Bass Station II's keyboard. Use it to introduce subtle changes to a sound as you play up and down the keyboard, divide the keyboard into multiple zones—one per key if you like—each playing its own sound, or create entire drum kits in a single preset for triggering manually or via the arpeggiator. This inspiring mode opens up a whole new world of sound design and performance possibilities.

Oscillators: Bass Station II is built on three analog oscillators and a noise generator. There are two fully independent oscillators plus a sub oscillator. Oscillators One and Two are switchable between sine, sawtooth, square and variable pulse width, and Oscillator Three - the sub osc - can be set to one or two octaves below Oscillator One. It can be square, sine or narrow pulse width, delivering the characteristically 'fat' bass tone.

Filters: You can select between two discrete filters - 'Acid' or 'Classic' - each with a built in overdrive for pushing filter tones from dry, to warm, to nasty! The 'Classic' Bass Station filter can be switched between low pass, high pass and band pass at 12 or 24 dB slopes. The 'Acid' filter is based on a diode ladder filter design that delivers a characteristically 303-esque sound that is designed to squelch

Bass Station II has two effects (not including the filter overdrive). Analog distortion drives circuit components to add new frequencies to the sound. The second effect is 'Osc Filter Mod' which creates a distinctive FM-type sound by using Oscillator Two to modulate the filter frequency

There are two envelope generators and two low frequency oscillators (LFOs). The first envelope is an ADSR amp envelope and the second is a mod envelope that can be used to modulate filter frequency, oscillator pitch and osc pulse width. LFO One is dedicated to pitch modulation whereas LFO is used to modulate osc pulse width and filter frequency. Although it looks like there are four LFO waveforms, the 'LFO Slew' function can be used freely to sculpt LFOs into smoother wave-shapes creating many more LFO possibilities

Bass Station II has a pure analogue audio signal path, reviving the spirit of the original Bass Station with a design optimized for bass

A brand new "Acid" filter joins the "Classic" original Bass Station filter -("Classic" switches between low, hi and band pass with 12 and 24 dB slopes)

Bass Station II ships with 64 factory patches and a further 64 user slots. Patch dump enables you to archive and swap sounds

Bass Station II's Arpeggiator and Step Sequencer are performance and production tools. The Arp can be directed to run through 32 different rhythmic patterns in different directions with a switchable octave range. You can also engage the Step Sequencer. Up to four sequences can be played in - with legato and rests - and played back using any one of the 32 rhythmic patterns.

Analog synth layout includes dedicated controls for all major parameters enabling hands-on control of the sound engine

Bass Station II can be connected to your music software as well as your MIDI compatible hardware

The keyboard mechanism is a two-octave (25-note) velocity-sensitive synth-action keyboard with full-size keys and assignable aftertouch

[VCA] I do a lot of home studio recording and live performance as a keyboard player, and I needed a good, hands-on mono synth. I tried going the VST and midi controller route, but it fell short. The Bass Station II is well built, especially the keyboard. The keys are full length piano keys and the key bed is solid. The aftertouch is awesome, and the special key functions and controls layout is easy to navigate. I really love the sequencer functions as well. The documentation has some annoying typos, at least the english version does, but descriptions are well-written. There are some really good demos/tutorials on YouTube as well.

[VCA] As someone who grew up with analog synths I love the layout. The digital assisted layer makes it a dream to use. Plus the physical design is just beautiful even if you're just using it as a MIDI controller.

[VCA] The Korg Monologue is a fantastic and fun two oscillator fully analog monosynth with selectable ring mod or sync on oscillator two. It lends itself naturally to bass tones and produces them well and with ease. Programming is fluid as almost every parameter has a knob or switch with an intuitive menu accessible through the sequencer buttons for things like tempo syncing the LFO, keytracking the filter, setting velocity control of filter and/or amplitude, assigning the bender, and naming patches. The sequencer is fun to use as well. I never recorded in real time, opting instead to step sequence, which acts as you would expect if you have used other step sequencers. I think it's a little odd that Korg opted for a 100 patch limit instead of a standard 128 but that's more of an observation than a complaint. I did not find many uses for the drive as I found it too aggressive & harsh in most applications but I don't take off pints for this. The LFO is very expressive and can even go up to audio rate in the fast setting, allowing for analog-FM style tones when assigned to any destination. Although this synth does not have full sized keys, they are not as small as say a microKORG or many controllers. They feel pretty natural to play and I wasn't hitting extra keys while using them. I would say this is an excellent first synth for anyone attempting to learn synthesis. However, even an experienced user as myself can find uses for the sound of this synth with its pure analog signal path and excellent sounding filter.

[8.2 lb] I'm an electronic musician and I LOVE my Monologue! It screams, it bellows, it whispers, it grunts, it can be pretty, it can be quite ugly...well, you get the picture. There's nothing on the market quite like it! Value For Money - off the charts! Build Quality - solid Did I mention that there's nothing on the market quite like it?

[21 x 14.5 x 6"] This synthesizer has a marvelous filter compared to its price. Low ends with resonance are quite clear. I can achieve many different sounds with this according to my taste. It has some wave type limitations of course, but that’s reasonable for the price tag. If I was to have three hundred bucks and decide again, I would definitely choose Monologue.

[8.2 lb] This monophonic analog synth is exactly what I had been looking for in regards to features and price point. Other synths that have similar amount of features are usually way more expensive. The sounds that you can make with this thing are awesome! And it's not just bass sounds. I also love the fact that this synth, as opposed to other competing synths, has full sized keys. This was worth every penny!
