This Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 35mm T2 Lens PL EF Silver Flarefrom Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 35mm T2 Lens PL EF Silver Flareis a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 2x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35+ sensors such as the ALEXA 35 and RED V-RAPTOR. It features a focal length of 35mm, interchangeable PL and EF lens mounts, an aperture range of T2 to T22 for a deep depth of field, 10 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh, and a 2x anamorphic squeeze to capture a vintage, cinema-style anamorphic look. Using an optional 1.4x full-frame expander adapter, Proteus lenses can also cover a full-frame sensor.

The prime lens has a minimum focus distance of 21.6" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, silver color lens flares, and a 73° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet, 0.8 MOD cine gears on focus and aperture rings, a 114mm outer diameter, and a 105mm front filter thread. The ARRI PL lens mount is interchangeable and can be swapped out for the included EF mount bayonet.

With a 2x squeeze ratio, you will have a 2.66:1 on a 4:3 sensor and a 2.4:1 on a 6:5 sensor after de-squeeze. It provides room for cropping to a golden 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The 2x squeeze ratio yields an ultra-widescreen cinematic look which is desired by the film industry. The squeeze ratio remains constant at any focusing distance to avoid anamorphic mumps.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are support rods crucial if Im mounting to Ursa Mini Pro 4.6? I intend to add that too my rig, but right now building one piece at a time.

A: I use these on my URSA Mini Pro and I don't use any support rods. The lens fits the camera very well.

Q: 2. I do wonder what will the lens perform like on blackmagic6k pro taking in consideration the sensor of the camera?

A: The BLAZAR LENS Great Joy 50mm T2.9 1.8x Anamorphic Lens (PL + EF-Mounts, Amber Flare) would be able to mount to the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (Canon EF). However, it would be better to use an anamorphic designed for Super 35-sized sensors for the best optics and performance.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with the Mofage PL to L mount adapter?

A: B&H does not test compatibility of adapters with lenses. Because the BLAZAR LENS Remus 65mm T2.0 Full-Frame 1.5x Anamorphic Lens (ARRI PL, Amber Flare) has not yet been released, there has been no information made available on this subject.

Q: 4. I shoot Red Gemini, will the image oval of this cover Geminis larger than typical 4perf height 30x18mm sensor in open gate?

A: The BLAZAR LENS Remus 35mm T1.6 S35 1.5x Anamorphic Lens (ARRI PL, Blue Flare) covers a 25x17mm image circle

Q: 5. Is it possible to install on the speedbooster adapter EF to m43?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic 35mm T2 Lens can be adapted for use with a speedbooster once the PL mount is not longer applied to the lens and it is using the EF mount.

Q: 6. does PL version have /i metadata?

A: No, the PL version does not have /i metadata.

Q: 7. What is the difference between this lens and the sigma 18-35 that is much cheaper?

A: This cinema lens is manual focus only, has gears, greater throw, accurate markings and more robust housing made with finer tolerances. This are specifications that come into play on higher level video productions particularly ones that are working day to day with a crew. For one man band personal video it could be overkill.

Q: 8. What would the angle of view of the 65mm be on a Sony A7S III or FX3?

A: The BLAZAR LENS Remus 65mm T2.0 Full-Frame 1.5x Anamorphic Lens (ARRI PL, Silver Flare) would give a horizontal field of view of approximately 45 degrees when used with a camera such as the Sony FX3 Full-Frame Cinema Camera.

Q: 9. What focal length would this be equivalent to in 6:5 anamorphic mode on the blackmagic 6k full frame?

A: If you are working with the Black Magic Cinema 6k full frame camera the lens view will remain at 65mm. If you are using the lens with the Cropped S35 sensor 6k there will be an added magnification of 1.6x.

Q: 10. Why doesn't the 100mm Remus come with an EF mount option like the other ones?

A: The BLAZAR LENS Remus 100mm T2.8 Full-Frame 1.5x Anamorphic Lens EF mount is offered as a separate option for this lens by Blazar. BLAZAR LENS Remus 1.5x Anamorphic Lens Mount Adapter (Canon EF) BH #BLREEFMT

[Super35/APS-C] This lens looks great, has interesting flares and has character up the wazoo. I love the distortion of this lens. It may be my PL mount, but the lens is a bit too soft at the moment at distances past 10 meters, and I'll have it checked out soon at a rental house with focus charts. Besides that, so amazing!

[T2] I've only done tests on location with these before the shoot I've been planning next week... These lenses have a dreamy, droopy, anamorphic look wide open, but I wouldn't suggest using them wide open unless you need a dreamy look. Super soft wide open. At T2.8 it gets better but T4 is where it actually gets sharp. For more context, I'm shooting on a C70, and we know that camera is on the softer side...

Aperture/Focus rings are smooth and a pleasure to use.

Focus breathing is not great, but depending on the shot your going after, it could be ok. They do some funky things when panning or handheld. I plan to use these lenses mostly locked off, on a slider, dolly, etc for nice smooth controlled shots with an artistic look.

Definitely recommend.

[T22] I am truly amazed by the images these lenses can produce for the price and size! If you are looking for lenses that don't look sterile and have some character to them without having to sell all your possessions to afford them, then these are absolutely the lenses for you!

[Super35/APS-C] Blazar nailed this and no its not a perfect lens... but for under a grand ITS INSANE that a TINY and LIght-weight anamorphic getting you that old panavision c-d series aesthetic but you can actually own these. Are they 2x no obviously not - My Gemini is 30x18mm (rounded) and on 4 perf S35 ie larger S35 chips like my Red Gemini this Lens is a DREAM... Its definitely soft wide open as most vintage anamorphics are and has some CA and flaws but they are very organic... and although the squeeze isnt 2x the Bokeh are CLEARLY oval and the blue streaks (got the blue streak PL ) are great... I always think you need to see how SMALL they are to believe it I dont need a support on My Gemini or when using the FF on my Eos r5. I cant wait for rest have 100 and Hoping the 85 comes soon and then the 33mm FF But this one is a must if you can only buy one.

[25.9 mm] I have a set of Sony CineAlta lenses that work with this really well. Any lens that has a ~14mm or shorter protrusion from the PL mount tabs will fit. The lenses are clinically sharp, and it doesn't look like any of that sharpness is really lost with this. I recently took this in to Atlas to try their anamorphic lenses alongside, and they have definitely a look whereas this preserves the look one gets from the taking lenses. The flares are very spherical, and the bokeh is round until you get to the edge of the view. It's fun to use, and the guys at Atlas thought it was cool. I recently shot a movie with this and the CineAlta lenses, and it all went well.

[Super35/APS-C] A lot of bokeh at 65mm, but one of the lightest ones in the Orion set (besides the 32mm). Lighter than 40mm

[10] These lenses have a constant 1.5x squeeze factor, which gives consistent results across the entire focus range and makes for reliable de-squeezing in post. Other affordable Anamorphic lens brands do not have a constant squeeze factor. This lens is clean with minimal chromatic aberration only at the very lowest T-stop. It is incredibly lightweight which is useful in run and gun productions. I cant speak for the PL mount, as those may have a bit more heft to them. Flaring is very gentle on the silver version and slightly more aggressive on the blue and amber versions. You cant go wrong with this lens. See attached example.

[ARRI PL] Love these lenses and the price

[ARRI PL] When I saw the many video reviews and demos of the Remus Lenses and the price for a set, I knew that they were going to be my first venture into anamorphic lenses.

Although it took almost 3 months to get the set, it was well worth the wait. I recommend this model, for it's budget and it's quality build. It's really amazing.

[35mm] I bought a set of Viltrox anamorphic lenses, which are amazing, but I wanted something smaller and lighter for my FX6/Ronin 4D. These Blazar lenses are a lot of fun. I only have the 65 so far, which I find wide enough for most situations without having the issues in the corners that the 45 had. Waiting to try out their new ones, I just need something slightly wider and another slightly tighter. Waiting to hear what they say about the new additions.
