Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. re: B&H #SEST18000NE0. Is "17200 rpm" a typo?

A: The Seagate 18TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATAIII Internal NAS HDD (CMR) BH #SEST18000NE0 is a 7200rpm drive. The error has been reported and should be updated as soon as possible.

Q: 2. I’m a professional photographer and all of my images are stored via these large drives. My operating system is on a ssd, and when I first bring images in they are processed on my ssd drive. But one I store them, they are still accessed by my software (Lightroom and other Adobe products), and often I’m still retrieving, searching for and editing the images long after they were moved off my ssd drive. This drive will be wired directly into my mother board and PC that has 4 storage drives. What are the pros of the following two drives and cons for my situation. Which would you recommend? Thank you.

A: I think your question boils down to a comparison of an SSD vs a HDD. For backup there are many reasons to go with a hard drive. Price, Capacity. For the OS and Applications - we would suggest SSDs.

Q: 3. It is compatible with Synology DS920+?

A: Yes. The Seagate IronWolf Pro series drives are recommended for use in NAS enclosures such as the Synology DS920+.

Q: 4. Will my Imac read this external device, it being 20TB?

A: The Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III Internal NAS HDD (CMR) BH #SEST20000NE0 is an internal drive, not external. If you buy an external enclosure for 3.5'' SATA HDD like the Oyen Digital Novus USB Type-C Rugged 3.5" HDD Enclosure BH #OY3N1CBL then you can use it externally with an iMac.

Q: 5. Would the 10TB suitable for the following NAS drive. Synology DiskStation DS920+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure?

A: Yes, it is suitable.

Q: 6. The 20TB version of the HDD is running a little hot, up to +54°C. Is that normal?

A: The average temperature for a 3.5" Disk drive is going to range between 41-77F (5-25C). 54C is abnormal and we advise to replacing this disk immediately.

Q: 7. Why does B&H list this drive as a ST4000NEA025 when (AFAIK) no such part exists, and the photos used indicate the actual part number, ST4000NE025?

A: With lots of dealings with Seagate drives, the “A” is for the US market. Replace “A” for Z” for Canada and so on. This is proper 👍 If you try to warranty swap an international drive in the US MARKET, you’ll be screwed

Q: 8. will this HDD work with LaCie 2big Dock 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array?

A: The Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD is not listed as a compatible internal drive and may not function properly.

Q: 9. Is it compatible with nas synology DS920+?

A: Yes. This Seagate 16TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, OEM) would work with the Synology DS920+

Q: 10. Will this drive work with Synolgy DS720+?

A: Yes, the Seagate 6TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, Retail) BH #SEST6000N000 is compatible with the Synology DS720+.

[12 VDC at 2 A] These drives are fantastic for a NAS unit and B&H delivers a great product on time.

[20 TB] This just plugs straight into a Synology NAS. It gives a warning about it not being on the approved compatibility list, but works just fine.
If you're ADDING this to a NAS which already has drives in it, remember that it can only add as much storage as the next-largest disk in the array. If you add one of these to an array containing 18TB disks, it can only add 18TB to total storage. If you add two, then they become backups for each other and you can use the full amount of space. This is also dependent on which RAID scheme you are using, but everyone with a Synology is probably using SHR mode.

[40 G / 2.0 ms] I have been using IronWolf Pro drives in a couple NAS devices for over 5 years and they've been very reliable. These are new, but two sets of smaller capacity drives were rock solid.

[12 VDC at 2 A] This is a bare drive ready to install. All that needs to be done is hook up the power and SATA cable then initialize and format the drive.
The drive is nice and quiet. It was designed to be running all day every day for years, unlike some consumer drives.

[12 VDC at 2 A] This is a great hard drive for server use or file backups, which is using this for both. If I need to expand my storage needs these are the first I'd consider getting again.
