The Heritage Audio DMA-73 Dual Mic Preampis a 1RU 19" rack-compatible dual 80 dB microphone and 10 dB line recording module based on the vintage 1073 preamplifier designed by Rupert Neve. The remake is intended for recording engineers who want the classic Neve sound in a standard studio rack format, but do not need the equalizer functionality of the original 1073.

The preamplifier supports selectable HI-LO minimum balanced and floating input impedances that accommodate a range of microphone types including vintage ribbons. A +48V phantom power button is included on both channels, as well as an input level knob for adjusting to your source. You can also switch the module into line mode to re-amplify prerecorded tracks and add color to a mix. Plugging in a mono 1/4" input into the DI port on the front of the unit automatically switches the module from MIC to DI mode. A selectable discrete component Class A 3rd order 80 Hz high-pass filter with an 18 dB per octave slope has been added for recording sources without the effects of low frequency coloration. An output control knob is included to prevent overloading the preamplifier.

The unit is powered by an external linear power supply to reduce the effects of electromagnetic interference on the audio transformers. The unit features gold-plated Neutrik XLR input and output connectors. To achieve the classic feel of the original 1073, the unit is constructed with Marconi-style knobs and vintage engraved pushbuttons for the DI, low impedance, line, pad, phase, and high-pass functions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lower noise with a Zoom H6 and NTG4 Plus?

A: If the noise you are experiencing is from having to turn up the gain on the mic pre amp of the Zoom H6, then this would help, by providing a dB boost. But you should not have to turn up the gain too much with a condenser mic such as the NTG4 Plus. If this is not the cause of the noise, then you may want to upgrade to a recorder with higher quality mic pre amp's, such as the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II 6-Channel / 8-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder, BH #SOMIXPRE6II.

Q: 2. Will this boost an XLR signal a further distance? I have a cable run of ~250ft and am trying to assure that I don't lose a signal.

A: The Rolls Mini-Mic Preamp is not really designed for boosting signal on a long cable run. For ~250 feet, you should use high quality shielded audio cables to avoid signal loss and if you do need to increase the gain without adding noise, you might want to try the Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator (B&H # CLCL1) which improves signal-to-noise ratio and improves the performance of passive microphone signals by driving stronger, cleaner signals over longer XLR cable runs.

Q: 3. Does this work with a Bluetooth adapter line in signal?

A: Yes you can go from the line output of the Rolls DU30b into a bluetooth transmitter.

Q: 4. Will this preamp boost an XLR signal a further distance than without using it? I have to cover a distance of ~300ft and am trying to assure no loss of signal.

A: The Rolls Mini-Mic Preamp is not really designed for boosting signal on a long cable run. For 300 feet, you should use high quality shielded audio cables to avoid signal loss and if you do need to increase the gain without adding noise, you might want to try the Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator (B&H # CLCL1) which improves signal-to-noise ratio and improves the performance of passive microphone signals by driving stronger, cleaner signals over longer XLR cable runs.

Q: 5. Is the case metal or plastic? Any RFI suppression built in?

A: Works Great. Metal case. I used it with an ethernet adaptor and was able to send the audio signal through a schools cat5 wiring for their school PA System.

Q: 6. can this be repurposed and used to pre amp a playback tape head? i know this is unconventional but i just need it to work. HELP!

A: The Rolls MP13 is a mic preamp so it is designed to receive a mic level signal but the output from the playback tape head is a line level signal. It could work, as long as you can control the output level from the tape head so it does not overload the input of the preamp, unless that is the desired effect that you wish to achieve.

Q: 7. Is this appliance voltage 220V?

A: The Manley Labs Slam tube stereo limiter and mic preamp is not 220V. It is rated for 120V use only.

Q: 8. Which Rolls preamps are battery powered?

A: NO LO SE

Q: 9. This portable? The included external power supply AC or Dc ? If this power supply is Ac, what do I need or use for remote field operation?

A: The PreSonus BlueTube DP v2 requires 12VDC to operate. Power adapter is included. The unit is not designed for field use.

Q: 10. How can I / Can I blend the two XLR signals into ONE send to a mixer? Example: Two input mics on a snare (top/bottom) into ONE send to Logic.

A: You may use two dynamic microphones (i.e. SM-57LC) in to a mic combiner (IMCOM) and be sure to get an inline XLR phase reversal barrel to flip the polarity on one of the mics.

[7.3 lb (3.3 kg)] using this to control volume input from high-end piano and output to near field monitors or pair of headphones; works well for intended purpose

[2] For me I found this Preamp far to weak to be at the end of the chain,
Most best right after mic or if you need a little mic boast else were, if you go 1/3 up in gain it will clip depends on vocal artist style, but all in all, a great little mic that took some pressure of the second preamp which is what I brought it for to begin with, an for that it gets a FIVE STAR!!!

[14.35 lb] I use it for vocal. Great vintech sound. Well built. If you overdrive the input (70db and more) it starts to distort.

[14.35 lb] I am a ham radio operator. The Heil PR781 needed some amplification to work with the Icom IC-7300 radio. I used at the lowest setting and it works great.
