The Hoya 86mm R72 Infrared Camera Filteris a specialized filter used for infrared photography with digital cameras and specialized infrared film. This nearly opaque filter blocks all visible light up to 720nm, enabling recording of subject matter and scenes that are not visible under normal conditions. Due to the nature of infrared photography, the filter factor for this filter is highly variable and depends largely on the ISO sensitivity in use and lighting conditions.

This filter is constructed from high-quality optical glass and is set in an aluminum filter ring to provide increased rigidity and prevention from filter jamming.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this work with Nikon D7100 ?

A: It will work with any digital camera, however, you are most likely looking at a 20-30 second exposure at ISO200. This filter on a film camera with ISO 400 film is rated at 8-12 ISO so you will have to compensate accordingly. Also, all composition must be done prior to putting the filter on the lens as you will not be able to see once it is in place.

Q: 2. How well will this filter work in a snowy environment like Yellowstone in the winter?

A: While you can use an infrared filter to photograph snow, snow will still appear white. One issue with photographing in snowy conditions is the sky is normally overcast with clouds. The strongest infrared images tend to occur on clear, sunny days and with lots of foliage in the scene (foliage which is usually absent in the winter). That being said, if you capture images in the snow on a clear, sunny day and there are evergreen trees/bushes or other plants/trees that still have visible leaves that reflect infrared lighting, you would get dramatic images in these circumstances. Typically, when using the R72 infrared filter, the blue color of the sky will be darkened, while green foliage, like trees and grass, will appear in snow-like tones.

Q: 3. I want an infrared filter for my 70 to 300 nikon VR lens and for a fixed 50 vr lens. What do I need?

A: Purchase the filter you want to fit the larger of the two lenses then buy an adapter (also called a step-up ring) for the smaller. For instance, if your 70-300 lens uses a 77mm filter and your 50 uses a 52mm filter then purchase the 77mm filter and a 52 to 77 step-up ring.

Q: 4. How many stops does this filter add to the exposure time?

A: An R72 filter will block about 7 stops of light but it will vary depending on the time of day, time of year and the anti aliasing filter that is built into your camera. Different times of the day and year have different amounts of IR light which will affect your exposure times. So you will need to experiment.

Q: 5. Can you use this if your camera's internal sensor has already had an IR conversion?

A: Hi Bill-It did not work for my Canon 7D. It seems one needs different kind of camera or make a permanent conversion of the camera body to disable the built in capability of IR conversion. Subrata

Q: 6. will this work on my Nikon Z7ii? Nikor 24/70 2.8 lens

A: Yes, the Hoya 82mm R72 Infrared Filter works on both the Nikon F mount and Z mount versions of the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens.

Q: 7. Will this filter work on a Fuji XE 2?

A: No it will not Infrared Filters are not made for digital cameras , all digital cameras have IR blocking filter and this filter blocks the other visible light

Q: 8. How many stops of light do you loose with this filter?

A: I don't have the exact figures with me here, but on a bright full-sun day my exposures using a Canon 5D MKIV and Canon 70-200 2.8 IS was 30 seconds @ f/2.8, 200 ISO. Hope that helps!

Q: 9. I recently purchased a Nikon D7100. What kind of results, if any, can I expect if I put one of these filters on it?

A: You may not get the expected results! Most cameras would not give you the effect unless you convert the camera, which will be permanent and expensive too! There are some old models which do not have built in ir cancellation mechanisms. Those are the ones which can generate ir effects.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with Pentax K70?

A: The Hoya 62mm R72 Infrared Filter is compatible with the K70. As for results it will vary depending on settings and the scene/shot.

[0.3 lb] This is one of the few filters you can't identify without either a flashlight or reading the edge text: it looks like a deep, black/neutral density filter. A flashlight will show read looking through it.

Usually, you need to pre-focus and switch to manual before putting this filter on, to get focus where it needs to be. My R7 can figure out exposure with the filter on in daylight... at dusk, you gotta do the math, but it has nice effects.

[0.3 lb] I have played around with my filter but being winter there isnt  any leaves on trees to make a big difference in the outcome. I have been taking water with old fishing houses and boat pictures. They look a lot better then B&W with a lot of depth and shadows but when spring comes and I get some living subjects like leaves I will know for sure :) I have been shooting in Monochrome so I dont have to take the saturation out later. I dont like editing much. I like to get it right the first time. Didnt have any clouds on this day of example :(

[0.3 lb] Produces very good IR photos and screws on to the camera without binding and resistance. Easy to use and a valuable companion when the subject looks like it would be interesting in IR. There is enough visible transmission so that it is easy to get a good focus.

[0.3 lb] I was a little concerned about how much IR light would pass through the in camera filter on my unconverted D610. I have obtained some very nice captures with the Hoya R72 at F8 ISO 100 and exposure times of 8 to 20 secs. There is enough visible light transmission for some color effects using LR and PS. This was a good purchase for my first foray into IR photography.

[0.3 lb] The R72 is my first foray into infrared, but so far, so good. The filter seems even throughout and the build quality is sound. No complaints.
