The 16-stop, 62mm Tiffen Solar ND Filter 62mm 16-Stopfrom Tiffen Solar ND Filter 62mm 16-Stopis a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Im use canon ef 16-35 f2.8 iii can use original lens cap? and can attach original lens hood?

A: The front thread is a larger 86mm thread so the original 82mm hood and cap that came with the lens you would use this on will not work with this filter no.

Q: 2. How thick is this filter?

A: The profile is rather thin. It is similar to a typical UV filter in thickness. Which is actually thin considering all of the components involved in a variable ND. One thing to keep in mind: on my 16-35mm II (82mm filter), once mounted, it does not flush with the lens. It is slightly wider (3-4mm) than the tip of the lens. It can be pretty annoying if you're trying to mount a hood.

Q: 3. Could you pull power out while it is plug to the outlet? to use it as a UPS when power runs out?

A: No, the ToughTested 16,000mAh Solar Power Bank doe not have the capabilities to directly pass power from an out let through to a connected device. When connected to an outlet for charging the internal battery the ToughTested 16,000mAh Solar Power Bank will only output power to a connected device once the internal battery has retained a small charge. However it will likely deplete very quickly when used in this way, so it is not advised.

Q: 4. I don't stack filters often but will be need to with a protective UV because of need to add & remove quickly without removing a protective filter in a harsh environment- any experience with vignettes & this filter with this at focal lengths 20-24 mm?

A: Camera: Nikon d750Lens: Nikon 20mm f/1.8, Nikon 24-120mm f/4.0Stacked filters: Nikon NC 77mm + Nikon 77mm Cicular PolarizerResult: Noticeable vignetting. DXO PhotoLab compensate automatically at NEF level (based on individual lens profile) about 90% of vignetting.

Q: 5. Does this filter fit Stellina?

A: The Vaonis Solar Filter for Vespera lets you use the Vaonis Vespera Digital Telescope to observe our closest star during the day. Mount the filter on the end of the optical arm to see and photograph sunspots.

Q: 6. Can it be charged with external solar panel?

A: Yes you can.

Q: 7. Can you get just one large set like 77mm and expect to be able to use them with step up rings, like you can with ND filters?

A: Yes you can. I just tested it using 3 step up rings. You have to focus manually.

Q: 8. Nikon circular polarizer 77mm

A: Not sure what the question is but the Nikon CPOL II is top of the line. Compared to the B-W, the Nikon has a higher polarizing effect, smoother rotation, and is thinner. Easy one finger set inside a sun hood. Once set, it stays put. Pricey but worth it. Get step-up rings to cover other lens filter sizes

Q: 9. Can it be charged with Goal Zero solar panel?

A: Yes you can.

Q: 10. How about thickness of 72mm XS-pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano? Is the thickness double as XS-Pro ND non-Vario one?

A: Since we are not sure of the thickness you are interested in and the second filter you are asking about, please email us at prophoto@bhphoto.com.

[Glass] I bought this filter so I could photograph the April solar eclipse. It’s a good quality filter, was easy to put on and take off and it protected my lens and camera. I was very pleased with my results and hope I get to use the filter again.

[Glass] As the Photo shows there is barely any color cast. It is more whitish than the yellow we expect but in truth it was more in line with what we saw when the solar eclipse was in totality phase.
So my photos in both totality phase and in partial phase (with this filter) were perfect match for color accuracy without touching anything in post).

[Aluminum] I pulled the trigger on the filter when the forecast called for clear skies for the recent eclipse. I used my Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L lens on my R5. The 82mm-77mm adapter allowed me to use the filter on it.

[62 mm] This filter delivers great imagery of the sun! Brings out really good detail of sun spots and of course the eclipse images were fantastic. During totality, it was super easy to take the filter off quickly and put it right back on. Good quality and good imagery.
