The ExpoDisc can be used to set an in-camera white balance using your camera's custom white balance procedure. With your camera on manual focus mode and the desired aperture set, simply hold the ExpoDisc in front of your lens, point the camera toward the same light illuminating your subject, and shoot. Use this image as the reference when setting white balance on the custom white balance function in your camera's menu. It can be comfortably held in front of your lens, or attached via the bayonet mount, and it fits lenses up to 77mm in diameter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this card appropriate for manually adjusting white balance in camera?

A: Yes, it is designed for that. I use it that way and it works perfectly.

Q: 2. Does this fit in the credit card slot of a wallet?

A: Yes, it is made to the size of a credit card, so if a credit card fits then this will fit as well.

Q: 3. Will the white ever fade to yellow? Should I plan on buying new ones every 3-4 years?

A: All white balance cards including the Vello White Balance Card Set (Medium) will generally shift over time. It is a good idea to double check these every year or so to make sure they are still accurate.

Q: 4. What are the cards made out of? Cardboard or plastic?

A: All plastic construction, not cardboard.

Q: 5. Are the cards rigid or floppy? Do they bend when held up by the subject, or do they remain flat/taught?

A: The cards are rigid.

Q: 6. Is this an 18% gray card?

A: Yes, the WhiBal G7 is an 18% neutral gray card.

Q: 7. Can the Expodisk v3 be purchased with both the 82 mm and the 77 mm Step-down Rings?

A: Yes the ExpoDisc V3 Professional White Balance Filter can be used with step rings but you can also just hold the larger filter over the smaller lens to take the reference photo. It does not need to be attached to the lens.

Q: 8. Is this White Balance ColorChecker the same as the White Reference in the Calibrite ColorChecker 3-Step Grayscale?

A: No, the Calibrite ColorChecker White Balance is not the same white reference as the Calibrite ColorChecker 3-Step Grayscale. The Calibrite ColorChecker White Balance is a very light gray (CIE L* = 81.19), while the Calibrite ColorChecker 3-Step Grayscale is a much brighter white (CIE L* = 96.36).

Q: 9. how large is large.?

A: These cards are 8x10".

Q: 10. What is this made of?

A: cardboard-framed arrangement of squares based off scientific painted color values.

[0.225 lb] V3 has improved approach to reading white balance. The adapter ring can be helpful, but also needs getting used to... but isn't necessary to use the ExpoDisc... User manual could be more inclusive; but targeted videos were made.

[3" / 77 mm] From the time of their introduction to the market, panchromatic emulsions have been know to retain some of the sensitivity to blue light than the human eye does. Modern emulsions are better, but still benefit visually with the use of a Wratten #8, a.k.a. K2 yellow filter. Being a throwback stubbornly devoted to film, my lenses always have a #8 aboard, whenever I’m making black and white images, unless other contrast control filters are needed for specific circumstances.

I can’t say I have done any technical comparisons between the actual bandwidth of filters manufacturers, but have used Tiffen filters for years, with no problems. My only minor gripe is they use aluminum instead of brass rims, which can lead to more frequent jamming, unless extra care is used when installing them. In a perfect world, they would use brass for their rims, and maintain their price point. And my car would start reliably at temperatures below freezing...

Users should always keep a filter wrench in their kit when using these. I also treat my filter’s threads with a VERY LIGHT film of synthetic lubricant like SuperLube or Syl-Glide.

Avoid lithium grease for all photographic equipment! It’s reactive with most of the alloys used in our precious gear, and degrades into a hard cheesy mess over time.

Anyway, Tiffen filters have never disappointed, and are a fine choice, compared to the pricier brands. Of course, ULF users probably could care less, but still—

[3" / 77 mm] Upon buying the DV3 and receiving it, I immediately tried it at my favorite place to photograph. I used it to obtain a good white balance and then on to photograph a few eagles. When I returned home, I downloaded all of the images and the good white balance. The results were excellent & totally calibrated with the ExpoDisc. This saved me some time in post just attempting to obtain a good white balance.

[0.225 lb] I purchased this when I traveled to shoot a friend's wedding and realized I forgot to bring the Expodisc I've had for years.
It's not that often that I find myself in a situation where using it is required, but when that does happen, it makes things a lot easier.

[0.225 lb] I recently upgraded my camera to a Canon R3 and wanted to incorporate a solid start to white balance before I start a photo session. This has proven to be a worthwhile investment and will be part of my kit from now on.

[0.225 lb] The NiSi Allure Soft White filter is great for creating a soft and diffused glowing effect, and it also reduce contrast. Great for creating a soft Cinematic Look!

[0.225 lb] I've decided to standardize on 77mm filters going forward. That way I need to buy only one of each color/type. I have no plans to buy or use any lens using filters larger than 77mm. I'll use step-up rings to adapt the filters to those lenses I use that use smaller diameter filters. this filter is a quality item and I've rated it at '5' for that reason.
