This filter has a grade of 1. Grades of 1/2, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. A: Justin... the dots on the filter ring are just reference points and do not relate to actual stop values. At the MIN setting you are at 2 stops, at the MAX setting you are at 8 stops. Between those two points there is no way to determine the exact stop value. If you need to know the exact stop value we also manufacture solid ND filters in a variety of stop values.

A: The Tiffen Variable Neutral Density filter controls how much light enters your camera lens. By controlling the light you have greater control over shutter speed to do long exposures. You can shoot waterfalls with the camera on a tripod and blur the water giving the water a look of movement while everything else stays still. You can also control aperture to shoot wide open for shallow depth of field in bright situations where your camera would normally overexpose when shooting wide open. This filter will not eliminate reflected light, for this you need a Circular Polarizing filter.

A: The TIffen VND filter provides you with 2 to 8 stops of light control. You can use this to limit the light entering your lens/camera in order to do long exposures during the day, or you can use it to limit light entering your camera during the bright sun in order to shoot low apertures for a shallow depth of field.

A: If you own the original Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L EF USM lens, or the new Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens, B&H # CA24704LIS, both use 77mm filters and would work with the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter listed above. However, the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, B&H # CA247028LII, uses 82mm filters, and would not be compatible with the above filter.
