To minimize unwanted resonances and distortion, Audioengine cabinets have 0.5" thick high-resin MDF walls with extensive internal bracing. Heavy internal sound-damping material is used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. All cabinet edges are rounded which look great and reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles.

The A5+ cabinets are available in several handsome finishes, offering a wide choice for complementing room furnishings.

Audioengine designs and manufactures their own tweeters, woofers, and other critical components. In other words, these are not "box built" speakers with off-the-shelf parts, but custom-designed to their specifications. What they do not fabricate directly in their factory is made to their designs (parts such as transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example). The cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all painstakingly tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires much less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components.

Studio monitor speakers are used by producers and engineers in recording and production studios. They are designed with a theoretical flat frequency response, which allows the engineer to create a final mix in such a way that the recorded music will sound good on most other speakers. Although Audioengine speakers are not designed to be up-close, or "nearfield" studio monitors, they carry over much of the same higher-end technology, components, and design philosophy for all Audioengine speaker systems.

The speaker cabinets, drivers, innovative bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all critically tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. They build all this goodness into the left speaker cabinet to make it super-easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, TV, network player, or any other audio product.

The Audioengine A5+ includes a 5V, 500mA USB power supply for charging portable devices while listening to your music. The USB connector allows you to charge and power your smartphone, tablet, Audioengine wireless adapters, or any other USB powered product. USB is for power only, not USB audio or data transfer.

The amplifiers in powered Audioengine speakers are located in the left speaker and are a conservatively rated class A/B analog monoblock design. This is a more traditional speaker/amplifier marriage which provides excellent quality audio and greater flexibility. All circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection.

Audioengine uses audiophile-quality, ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power, and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The woofers are aramid fiber woven glass composite with rubber surrounds. Aramid fiber is obviously very strong, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The speaker materials and construction are robust enough to stand up to some serious thrashing, so speaker grilles are not needed and they will sound and look great after many years of use.

Both drivers are directly video shielded and allow you to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.

Power transformers are a large contributor to the overall audio performance, especially in the low end. Again, no off-the-shelf parts. Audioengine uses gapless core toroidal transformers which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, directly translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard, lower-cost transformers and also generate less heat.

  • Output current limiting
  • Thermal over-temperature
  • Power on/off transient protection
  • Replaceable external main fuse

  • Variable RCA line out
  • USB 1.1 and higher charging support

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a way to turn the speaker lights off?

A: No, unfortunately there is no switch to turn off the LED lights on the Pyle Pro PPHP210AMX PA Speaker and 600W Amplifier/Mixer DJ Kit. The lights come on at a certain volume level and pulse with the beat of the music.

Q: 2. Do you think I could use this for the Sennheiser MKH 416?

A: Sure, the RODE DS2 Desktop Studio Arm for Broadcast Microphones (BH #RODS2SA) could support a Sennheiser MKH 416 with some sort of added shock mount like the Auray DUSM-1 Universal Shockmount (BH #AUDUSM1).

Q: 3. Will the LED lights fit if an impact floodlight 10 reflector is attached to the porcelain socket?

A: No, the led bulb is too wide at the base and will hit the reflector.

Q: 4. What is the Maximum Height?

A: The maximum height on the stands in this kit is 8 feet.

Q: 5. Can I use this for my edifier S3000pro?

A: No. The SS03 (same price) is the stand for S3000 Pro speakers: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1538165-REG/edifier_ss03_speaker_stands_for.html

Q: 6. What radio triggers should I get to use these flashes with a Canon 70D (since I don't want to just use them as optical slaves)?

A: A radio trigger such as the Vello FreeWave LR Wireless Flash Trigger and Receiver Kit B&H # VERFWLR can connect to the 3.5mm sync port one of the SF-AE80 slave units. However, the additional units would still need to be triggered optically as you would only have one receiver. Please see the image for reference.

Q: 7. Will the B-Fi work with iTunes?

A: I do not see any iTunes compatibility. You are however able to stream Apple Music via Airplay from your iPhone/iPad.

Q: 8. is this cage compatible with the original Atom A5 monitor?

A: Yes, the original Vaxis Atom A5 is compatible with the Vaxis Monitor Cage for Atom A5 SDI.

Q: 9. Does this have the adapter I need to connect this to a RODE VideoMicro 2 MIC?

A: The RODE DS2 Desktop Studio Arm for Broadcast Microphones comes with a 3/8" to 1/4" Thread Adapter. No additional adapter would be required to connect the RODE VideoMicro II.

Q: 10. can they hold an umbrella?

A: Each socket has an umbrella slot built into it.

[< 0.05%] I bought a pair of A5s about 10 years ago. They were damaged after many years of enjoying them due to mistakes by me. I recently bought these A5+ with Bluetooth. Love the quality of the build, the simplicity of operation, and the sound. There service from B&H was excellent, shipped and arrived quickly.

[10 Kilohms] Bought this on a recommendation. Very pleased with quality.

[Yes] At some point, those other tiny desktop speakers are no longer what you're looking for. A hearing-aid wearer needs the best fidelity and clarity. The Audioengine speakers have real components, and are nice and clean from soft to loud. Lute, pipe organ, classical guitar, singing voice - all nicely done. Speech is easy to hear.
Note, as they say in the instructions, the speakers do have some break-in. At first, they sound a little bright and tinny, and mellow out as the larger element comes to itself.
Sub-woofer needed? Possibly not, if you're happy to hear the deepest tones as background. These speakers do that job. If you want room-shaking whallup, then you'll need a bigger cone and heavy mass, etc., a sub.
Altogether, the 2 bookshelf speakers are very nice for size and price.

[10 Kilohms] I purchased a pair of P4s for my office. The first thing I noticed was the quality packaging and first rate finish and build quality. I'm driving them with the Audioengine N22 and using an (outdated) Luxman D-105u cd player. They blew me away out of the box. Midrange is, well, luscious. Voices are natural and timbres are correct. The high end is detailed, but not cloying. There isn't much on the bottom end, but that what subs are for. Soundstaging is outstanding, much wider than you would expect, with solid images. Bottom line - these speakers sound way better than they should for $
