Add the unmistakable sound of API's flagship analog console to your productions with the API Vision Channel Strip Plug-In from Universal Audio. Artists have used API's legendary hardware to shape the sound of era-defining works including Radiohead's In Rainbows and Stevie Wonder's Innervisions.

With this painstakingly recreated digital emulation, you can now access that sought-after tone from your digital workstation, beginning with a simulated API 212L preamp with famed 2520 API op-amp and custom API transformers. Use the 225L compressor and 235L gate/expander to sculpt the dynamics, then use the 215's filters for broad EQ strokes and the 550L or 560L modules for more refined EQ adjustments. This plug-in software download includes a native version that will run on Mac and Windows computers without UA hardware, as well as a second version that runs accelerated on Apollo interfaces and UAD-2 hardware.

With a click of the new EQ Type button, the API Vision Channel Strip Collection lets you choose between the revered 550L 4-band parametric EQ and API's famous 560L series 10-band graphic EQ. The new 560L EQ emulation captures the complex band interactions and musical filter-amp distortions of API's coveted hardware, letting you quickly sweeten and shape guitars, add aggression to drums, and push vocals forward with analog punch, low-end transparency, and ultratight imaging.

The API Vision Channel Strip Collection gets even better with Apollo interfaces, thanks to Unison mic preamp technology. Unison gives you all the important impedance, gain stage sweet spots, and circuit behaviors of API's iconic 212L preamp via bidirectional control and communication between the software and your Apollo's mic preamps. Plus, you get the same features found in API's flagship Vision Console including a Mic/Line switch, dedicated cut filter, and -6 dB line pad.

A versatile compressor teaming with character, the 225L thrives on any instrument, in any genre—from a single track to an entire mix. Plus, use selectable New and Old functions for two delicious brands of compression, from mild to severe.

The ultrafast 235L Noise Gate/Expander lets you easily shape ambience and attack on individual sources like kick drums or bass synth, and also clamp down on noisy drum-kit rattles and gnarly guitar-amp noise. Plus, the passive, fully sweepable 215L's high- and low-pass filters are perfect for broad-stroke EQ sculpting, letting you expertly craft your source material while preserving its original tone.

[Download] I have used this for documentary work for 2 years. It has been with me to in the studio and brought along to interviews in a shoulder bag approximately 50 times.

What I dislike is the weight. It's heavy when I go one-person-band recording. I worry (and expect) every time that I will have a tube issue or some problem associated with having moved the unit out of my rack kit for setup elsewhere. Cross my fingers that it's never given me trouble or had malfunctions.

The manual was easy to read and follow. This is one of the best differentiators in terms of quality in my kit and has attracted talent because the sound is leaps and bounds above client expectations. I like that I have everything in one spot for a subject of any range (quiet and shy, loud and booming) with total confidence that I can get an archive-quality recording.

I have recorded into various pro recorders and ENG or compact cine cameras with it. In the future, the size and tube-only operation has led me to explore other options such as Twinfinity and Grace preamps.

I will second another reviewer that Universal Audio's changes seem to depart from the tradition of this old company. I have the whole thunderbolt-powered Universal Audio Apollo 8p racks at the home studio. They are not reliable like this unit, for me. It seems like the software-based mic pres always have some annoying issue or update. I have not taken this in for a warranty, given that it's worked without trouble.

[1 User] I’ve owned this channel strip for over 10 years. This is what great audio sounds like. A lot of people put a lot of money into mics, but I would suggest spending money on a great preamp/channel strip first.

I’ve used the following mics with it: AKG414, Neuman U87 & TLM103, SM7B, and several dynamic mics usually used for live applications (SM57 & 58, e935 etc)

This unit realizes the potential of all mics. I’ve even recorded vocals with less expensive dynamic mics and the quality has always been warm, present, and professional.

If you haven’t put a good preamp between your mic and interface before, you will have a “I was deaf, but now I hear” moment.

[1 User] If you have the money to be looking at this and really considering it, you should do yourself a favor and go ahead and make the plunge. Digital recording has always lacked the volume necessary (gain stage) to produce truly professional quality recordings It is very frustrating I know, but you will soon feel much better!

[1 User] I’ve been looking for something like this for years and until now it just didn’t exist. Sure, there are generic control surfaces for DAWs but nothing that lets you get direct hands on control with literally any plugin. The plugin auto mapping is actually pretty good but it’s also very easy to set up your own custom maps with the learn mode and included editor, and the ‘select’ mode that allows you to control any plugin parameter with the fader is super handy. I love it.

[Download] I dont give products 5 stars ever. But today I'm doing that. Let me tell you I am really impressed. I can see why ART named this thing the Voice Channel. I keep reading about people using this for bass or overheads (It would work great for these) but this is really designed for the voice. After owning one for just a couple of hours and really getting a feel for the unit, it took my voice to a brand new level. Admittedly this is the first time i've done compression/eq/de-essing/gate/expand out of the box. However i feel like the investment in plugins (and the fact that very successful producers like Chris Lorde Algie and Graham Cochrane use plugins) prove there's nothig wrong with that approach. I've been recording in the box (plus a preamp) for a while. This was such an immediate upgrade. I've tried both using the USB out as well as running direct into my interface. The quality is absolutely there. The control though? If you're an in-the box mixer, you should still get one of these. Add a bit of compression and De-Esser on the way in and your singer can relax and focus on the performance. You can get SO MUCH MORE out of the singer that way. Overall i've been so impressed with this unit. The Preamp goes from SUPER clean to as much breakup as you would ever realistically use. It's a very musical preamp. And then the controls let you fine tune. I went from doing everything in the box to now I just use reverb and maybe a touch of further eq once I have my mix almost finished. When I expand and buy more channel strips, I'll probably just buy more of these.
