Get all the clean gain you could ever need for the quietest mic sources with the AEA Ribbon Mics TRP3, a two-channel microphone preamp made in the USA by the same company known for its premium ribbon mics. This compact half-rack unit offers balanced XLR mic inputs and high-impedance, and low-noise circuitry, so it can yield optimal results with ribbon, condenser, or dynamic microphones.

Between the 12-position mic-pre gain and the continuously variable output level, up to 85 dB of JFET gain is available for each channel. Three LEDs are provided per channel for a clear indication of levels at -20, 0, and +24 dBu. Tame bass buildup and proximity effect at the push of a button with the low-cut filter, which cuts 3 dB at either 115 or 230 Hz, depending on your setting. The TRP3 includes an external universal switching power supply to allow operation in any country.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does it have direct outputs?

A: Yes. Changeable Mic to line

Q: 2. I plan to use this with an h4n zoom or h5 zoom or a tascam 60d , which fethead should I get, there is an in line and fathead regular or fethead phantom? please kindly clarify before I order. thanks!

A: It depends on the mic you are using. if your mic needs phantom power (condenser) then get the fethead phantom. If the mic does not need phantom power (dynamic) get the regular.

Q: 3. Is the power supply truly universal? The user manual appears to list different power requirements for different models depending on where it is purchased.

A: The Mackie 402VLZ4 ships with an external power supply, and is packaged regionally. The power supply available with units purchased from B&H are 100-120 VAC compatible only.

Q: 4. can I run the dual xlr out to my computer to record, while monitoring with the dual 1/4 inch to headphones?

A: Yes, you can connect the left and right XLR outputs to your computer using a USB audio interface that accepts line level input like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface (B&H # FOSCARL2I23G), PreSonus Studio 24c Desktop 2x2 USB Type-C Audio/MIDI Interface (B&H # PRSTUDIO24C) or any other model with two inputs compatible for line level signal. The interface will also have a headphone jack for monitoring while recording. If you don't already have the 802VLZ4, you may want to consider purchasing a mixer that has a built-in USB audio interface like the Mackie ProFX10v3 (B&H # MAPROFX10V3) or ProFX6v3 (B&H # MAPROFX6V3), Yamaha MG10XU (B&H # YAMG10XU), Soundcraft Notepad-12FX (B&H # SO12CDTMUSBE), or Allen & Heath ZED-10 (B&H # ALZED10).

Q: 5. Will the Sony ECM-44B - Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone work with the FetHead Phantom?

A: Sorry, I just don't know.

Q: 6. Built-in effects?

A: No

Q: 7. Is the gain from this mixer sufficient for use with vintage ribbon microphones, such as the RCA77Dx? Thanks.

A: Tough to tell. I use a Heil PR 40 and do have to crank up the gain a bit. Great mixer and clean sound. Its worth giving it a try.

Q: 8. Is it possible to have a mic channel only go through the aux without having any audio in the main mix? Think Talkback for aband.

A: No, it is not possible to assign a mic channel from the Mackie 802VLZ4 8-Channel Ultra-Compact Mixer to go only through the Aux Send and not the Main Mix.

Q: 9. Can I plug in a line level input from a mixing board?

A: Yes

Q: 10. What is the difference between LINE IN 3-4 and TAPE IN on Mackie 402VLZ4?

A: Tape in is just designed for playback and is routed directly to the output. Channel 3 and 4 is ballanced and will accept level signals.

[3.96 lb] I bought two of these to us for importing and exporting 8 stereo stems from my DAW via ADAT Lite Pipe. The tubes are the icing on the cake. These sound sweet and clean, and are a breeze to operate. The interface is so intuitive than the manual is almost unnecessary. Grab one before ART figures out that they're worth far more than list price.

[85 dB at 1 kHz] This is one of the best audio purchases I've ever made. It's one of the cleanest devices I've ever heard (or not heard. . . .) It is an amazing amount of gain in the preamp, it easily drives any pair of headphones I own, and it's built like an absolute tank.

It's the perfect belt pack for a boom operator. Another winner for Sound Devices!

[50 ohms] Three words came to mind when I first heard my voice through this preamp. Grit, grain, and growl. That was just talking, and when I sang through it an A/B comparison between the ISA Two and what I'd been using revealed to me its professional-sounding character. In an hour or so I experienced the sound of front end transformers, and found some sweet spots where I could play with it like an instrument. Signal chain was TLM49 into the ISA, then line level into my Liquid Saffire 56. Without this preamp in the middle, things aren't as finished sounding. The Liquid preamps are good, they're just not as reactive as this genuine design. I like the chiclet transilluminated buttons for the functions. The big knobs are great, and overall build quality is fantastic. With the TRS send and return, this thing is ready to drop into your studio. It worked for me. A condenser microphone doesn't seem to care about the variable impedance. A dynamic or ribbon can be coaxed to change its frequency response to tailor it to a source, and here I was able to make use of this feature. You can starve the highs or make them crisp. But then I'm used to the MD441, where a twist of the collar will do the same. The high pass filter is great. We don't have eq's on the way in typically with DAWs, so rolling off the lows in a gentle way while tracking makes sense for a lot of instruments to get rid of the low clutter. It felt good to whack this puzzle piece home. It was the sound I was looking for, didn't cost all that much, and gave me a pair of quiet preamps I can use for stereo that's a cut above for location work. No A/D conversion option here. Look to the ISA One or the 4 or 8 version if you need that.

[3.96 lb] Solid build, absolute reliability & nice sounding pre-amp with plenty of quiet gain - as with all my SD gear! One of my favorite uses is to power a Sennheisser 416T mic. Can’t find T-power in affordable mixers nowadays so has kept this mic. alive. Also perfect tool for boom op. wanting easily adjustable monitoring.

[85 dB at 1 kHz] I just bought this little preamp and wow, nothing bad to say when I paired to my zoom h6. Really good sound quality using AT2035. Bought a monoprice 1/4 inch TRS to female XLR and plug it to the H6 and even though the h6 has good preamps, I could hear some noise when bump up more than 7 db gain. Now sound is amazing!!! Thanks SD for the great product and B&H for the fast shipping.

[50 ohms] Before I begin, here is my set up: Sennheiser MKH 416 MM-1 Tascam DR100mkii It took some tinkering to figure out the best settings in this pipeline. I discovered this to be the best setting (for this set up): MM-1 Preamp at 46db and the DR100mkii at 7. This setting gave me the best audio output and lowest noise floor. Remember to set the input to LINE on your recorder! To get the same audio output on the Tascam itself, it would have to be on HIGH (on the back) and on 7 on the dial. Of course the audio was junk. But the MM-1 is able to give you a higher output with a lower noise floor. This is a small thing but I love the belt clip. I wanted to look into the MP-1 but it didn't have a clip. I was trying to build a simple and portable boom kit. The MM-1 is also lighter and easier to carry than expected. And it's built like a tank. I really don't have any gripes with this. Knobs are solid, the sound is solid...what's not to love? I don't know why you would look into this product but if its anywhere near what I was looking for, I definitely recommend it! :)

[50 ohms] For the price, this is an unbelievable product. The tone is clean and smooth, the conversion is great, the ADAT output is simple, the whole thing is rugged and takes up only 1 rack space. The tone won't change your life or solve all your problems but I haven't found another product that gives you 8 channels for anywhere near this price.

[85 dB at 1 kHz] Got this for my boom Op. Easy setup and great sturdy design. The XLR line out connection is hard to disconnect. It's just at an awkward angle, but it has a firm connection.

[85 dB at 1 kHz] If you have the luxury of separate crew positions for boom operator(s) and sound mixer, get this! The boom op just clips this to his or her belt, plugs in their headphones and the microphone, and then it's mostly just set and forget. The signal quality is so quiet and perfect! (I already have a Sound Devices MixPre-D, which evidently has the same signal chain, so I wasn't surprised.)

A word of warning: if the mixer or recorder you plug this into doesn't have line-level inputs, then you won't get much out of this device. The Zoom F4 specifically only has line level if you plug into it with a 1/4 TRS. If you connect this to a mic-level input, you'll have to turn the gain down on one or both device so low as to be difficult to use. If the gain is low on the MM-1, then the headphone output will also be relatively low. So if your recorder doesn't take line-level for input, then don't bother.
