Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I run this as RAID 6 with a 3rd party software as softraid currently does not support RAID 6 ?

A: Yes, the OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure will support RAID 6 via another external software.

Q: 2. Is there any way to set this system up to be "hot-swappable", meaning adding a larger capacity drive(s) to increase space without re-formatting? Something similar to Synology's SHR or Drobo's BeyondRAID?

A: No, the OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure BH #OWCTB38JBKIT does not support that functionality.

Q: 3. Will this support 24TB drives?

A: The OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Raid Array with SoftRAID XT (BH #OWTB38SRKIT0) is compatible with hard drives up to 20TB.

Q: 4. What are people putting in the PCIe slot?

A: The OWC ThunderBay Flex can add a 4K video capture card for direct ingest of multi-stream high-res footage. Record high-quality tracks with an audio card and then edit and archive tracks via the PCIe x16 slot.

Q: 5. Do I need to fill up all drive slots for it to function?

A: You could use any number of drives it would run in the JBOD configuration (meaning your data would not be redundant).

Q: 6. Will it handle 18TB or even 20TB hard drive?

A: At the time of this answer, this OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure would support a max of 18TB hard drive.

Q: 7. is OWC Thunderbay 8 compatible with OS Ventura?

A: Yes, the OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Raid Array with SoftRAID XT is compatible with MacOS Ventura.

Q: 8. Does SoftRaid need to be running on every computer the Thunderbay gets connected to when in RAID 5 to continue functioning?

A: No, SoftRAID XT is only required for setting the drive's format and monitoring the drive, however it is not needed to transfer data to and from the OWC ThunderBay 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 Raid Array with SoftRAID XT after it has been setup.

Q: 9. I have recently purchased SoftRaid 5.8.3 software directly from OWC. I have a Thunderbay 4 bay unit that I have configured to Raid 5. If I buy this 8 bay unit (that does not come with software that enables Raid 5), can I use the Softraid 5.8.3 that already purchased to configure this 8 bay Thunderbay to Raid 5?

A: Yes, SoftRAID XT will work with any OWC enclosure.

[40.75 lb] This is my first ever RAID setup and it's painful to think I waited so long to go this route (15+ years of using individual external HDDs and SSDs).

I loaded this thing with 8x 16TB IronWolf Pro drives and setup a RAID 5 (128TB = 112TB total storage with 1 drive for redundancy/recovery).

The speeds I am getting with this thing average 750-800MB/s write and 1,300-1,400MB/s read. Note that you MUST use 8 total drives to achieve higher speeds like this, I see a lot of people complaining they are getting slow speeds, but they are usually using only 4 or so drives, or 5,400RPM drives.

I can easily playback 6K R3D files from my Red Komodo as well as all filetypes, resolutions and frame rates from my Sony FX3.

Definitely happy with this purchase and would recommend to any video editors who need speed, but also care about protecting their data!

[160 TB] Im buying as soon as they become available a Mac Studio Ultra but I wanted to be ready with the storage. Today I still use a Mac Pro 11 years old with internal disks. It's a fast machine but after seeing what my Macbook Air can do with video compression I decided that is time to switch. My main concern was the noise, I do have an older SATA box from OWC that I use for backup but I shut it down when is not in use due to the noise. Well, this new Thunderbay 8 is just whispering. A very well designed product, the fan probably has variable speed and my WD HDD don't make too much noise even though they are enterprise specs. One of the RAID is 3 14TB in RAID zero configuration (soft ) and I get about 750/800 MB/s , faster than when I had them installed in my old Mac Pro since SATA there was just 3Gbps . Silent fast, not too expensive . Nothing beat this. Also, everything was plug & play. I just moved my HDD from my Mac Pro to this box and they appeared on my Mac Air when I plugged the TB cable in. My only complain is the black color, it's nice but why black? This should have been the same color like the Macs are. At least the mainstream silver. Second minor complain the cable in the box is very short. Buy a longer cable when you buy the box unless your connected device is really next to this box.

[1 x 450 W] Using as a RAID 1+0 with SoftRaid as a backup for footage, and have no complaints. Fan isn't loud enough to even notice under my desk. Throughput with Thunderbolt allows me to attach other arrays, or even spindle drives, when my other ports are being used. You can also mount or eject drives that are in front of the chain, which allows me to keep this attached while removing edit or footage drives.

[160 TB] Used this on a recent DIT job and I needed the speed and storage. I found that it's peak write/read speed using Silverstack was about 1.2GB/s Read and 1.5GB/s write. No problems recreating the volume into a RAID 0 using SoftRAID. I didn't test it at it's default setting in RAID 5. I'm using a MacBook Pro M1 Max and have offloaded 14TB over the last 2 days with no problems.
