Limited to 1000 units worldwide, this Leica SL2 boasts a silver anodized top plate and base plate, providing a striking contrast to the elegant black leather covering reminiscent of the Leica M11. The distinct, minimalist design highlights Leica's commitment to functional elegance and haptic value, resulting in a camera that is as visually stunning as the images it captures.

Not only does this new variant embody the unmistakable Leica design language, but it perfectly marries the past with the present by incorporating the technical specifications of the modern SL2 series. While celebrating the brand's historic roots, the silver Leica SL2 doesn't compromise on features or performance, bringing you the best of both worlds.

For accelerated autofocus performance, a Leica Object Detection AF system quickly calculates the distance to subjects and adjusts the focusing position with sensor and lens communication occurring at rates up to 480 fps. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications through the use of a Body Detection mode. It also features 225 selectable AF areas, which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus.

Featuring a full-frame 47.3MP CMOS sensor and Maestro III image processor, the SL2's imaging capabilities have been optimized for high-resolution recording along with notable sensitivity, a wide 14-stop dynamic range, and flexible recording modes. The sensor's design omits a low-pass filter in order to maintain the highest degree of sharpness and resolution. When paired with the Maestro processor, noise levels are further suppressed throughout the sensitivity range, from ISO 50-50000, and processing capabilities further yield fast full-resolution continuous shooting speeds up to 20 fps with an electronic shutter, 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, and 6 fps with a mechanical shutter and AF-C, for up to 78 consecutive DNG files.

Beyond stills shooting, the SL2 is a capable video camera featuring up to 5K (4992 x 3744) recording with 10-bit color, as well as DCI, UHD 4K, and Full HD settings. Also, high-speed recording modes for UHD 4K60, with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps, with 30 fps playback, offer 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively.

Complementing the video quality, a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode and L-Log gamma profile can be used to expand highlight and shadow details and offer greater flexibility when color grading. Additionally, recording to an optional external recorder is possible, via the HDMI Type A port, and support for an external microphone and headphones are also available via dedicated 3.5mm jacks.

Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization compensates for a broad range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery.

Using sensor-shift stabilization technology, the SL2 also features a Multishot mode to capture and compile eight separate exposures to create a single 187MP raw or JPEG file. Suitable for static subjects and when working on a tripod, this mode creates a more highly detailed and color accurate image than a single shot alone can produce and produces an image with a 16736 x 11168-pixel resolution.

  • Used in conjunction with other members of the L-Mount Alliance, the L lens mount is a versatile interface with a mount diameter of 51.6mm and a flange distance of 20mm for working with a broad range of optics.

  • An impressive EyeRes EVF is a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED finder offering a clear 0.78x configurable viewing magnification along with a smooth 120 fps refresh rate, 0.005 sec lag, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

  • Large 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD is a bright, clear means for live view shooting as well as playback and menu navigation. This screen also uses Gorilla Glass for a highly durable design.

  • In addition to the rear LCD, a 1.28" top status LCD can also be used for quickly reviewing shooting settings, even when the camera is powered off.

  • Durable, weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction is splash, dust, and freezeproof to accommodate working in harsh weather conditions and trying environments.

  • Dual UHS-II-compatible SD memory card slots offer flexible image storage, allowing you to segregate raw and JPEG files to different cards, save duplicate files to both cards, or simply double your storage space with overflow recording.

  • A USB Type-C port allows for fast file transferring as well as high-speed in-camera battery charging. Additionally, an HDMI Type A port benefits video applications, and 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks suit advanced audio recording needs.

  • BP-SCL4 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens made in Germany or Portugal?

A: This lens is made in Leica's Germany factory.

Q: 2. Does this camera offer "focus peaking" or other focus assists for manual focus lenses?

A: Yes. The Leica SL2 has focus peaking. :)

Q: 3. Can this Lens be configured too be used with a Nikon D850?

A: I'm sorry, no, there isn't an adapter for that configuration.

Q: 4. How much does 50mm f/1.2 lens weigh?

A: That information has yet to be released by Leica. However, we do have a shipping weight of 5lbs. (2.27 kg) for the box with the lens in it. For the purpose of comparison, the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH Lens (Black) BH #LE50095NB weighs 1.5lbs. (700g). We would typically expect a f/1.2 lens to weigh less than a f/0.95 lens, so a good guess might be around 1.1 lbs. or about 500g. We'll update the specifications as more information becomes available.

Q: 5. What are the silver and black lenses made from? Brass? Aluminum?

A: The silver Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 is constructed out of brass and the black is out of aluminum.

Q: 6. How long is the factory warranty?

A: You receive a 2-year warranty with Leica. This the direct manufacturer warranty.

Q: 7. Does this camera made crop when shoot 4k dci at 60 fps?

A: Yes, there is a small crop when shooting 4K DCI at 60fps on the Leica SL2 Mirrorless Camera (BH #LESL2SL).

Q: 8. can this camera use M type lens? if so does it need an adapter?

A: You can use an M-mount lens on this camera with an adapter like this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046772-REG/leica_18771_m_adapter_t_for_leica_t.html

Q: 9. I have an SL Typ 691. Looking for a new tripod. What is the correct screw head size for a tripod that will accept my SL?

A: The Leica SL Type 601 (and most other cameras, including the Leica SL2) uses the 1/4"-20 mounting thread. Any tripod would work, but in the interest of getting you a great tripod that might support some of the larger Leica L-mount lenses, some good recommendations are the Gitzo traveler or RRS Ascend. https://bhpho.to/3yc8YhK https://bhpho.to/3ymjHGq

Q: 10. Does it work with Sigma MC-21 adapters?

A: Hi--yes, this camera is compatible with the MC-21 lens adapter.

[DNG, JPEG] I heard this works for the new 35mm Summilux-M, but when it arrived I found that it also works for my older 50mm Summilux-M (the one before the current model), so I'm ordering another one!

[Shoe Mount] When I first ordered this camera was just an expensive Panasonic S5 which I own. It NOT. It takes photography to the next level. The touch interface on camera best I have seen on a camera. The ergonomics of this camera is perfect for my hand. The ISO and Dynamic range are simply incredible. The release of firmware 2.0 has brought more fantastic features to this master peace.

[DNG, JPEG] I switched from TL2 to SL2-S and have no regrets. Its simplicity, ease of use is excellent, and the image quality is fantastic (colours, skin tone, sharpness, etc.).

A lot of people knock the autofocus, but I'm 99% happy with it for stills, and manual focus is the way to go for video anyway.

I tried the Sigma 28-70, which is a super lens by default, but the Leica version is better. Not just because of the build quality, but also the image quality. Yes, the 24-90 is a hair better and noticeably heavier (I tried that too), I think the kit lens is somewhere between the Sigma 24-70 and the Leica 24-90.

I give it 5 stars, but if it was a little lighter I would give it 6. :) After a full day of shooting, you can feel the weight, but it's lightened if you buy a good neck strap.

[L-Mount] Was looking for a hybrid that has the Leica look and this camera is worth it. Auto focus is just whatever for video but I personally manual focus anyway. Leica LUTs for Log look sublime. Sensor works well in tough lighting conditions.

[5,760,000 Dot] Rather than a myriad of buttons, dials, and gizmos -- Leica builds a UI (User Interface) designed for photographers, not computer geeks.
Stills settings are separate from Video settings and all are logically presented for instant access.
Most importantly for me, the old fashioned stills photographer, the image's RAW files (DNG like Adobe) have amazing depth in both shows and highlights yet are adaptable to the creator's wishes.

[14-Bit] I have not had my camera that long but the Leica SL2S with the Vario-Elmarit 24-70mm lens is everything I expected it to be. The colors spectacular and the build quality is outstanding. Simply put, when I bought my first Leica X I knew I would never pick up another camera without the Leica badge. Now that this is my second Leica I have been reassured that Leica's are in a class all by themselves. I am very happy with my purchase.

[Yes] I love how this camera is made . Super solid and I don't have to worry about it getting water and dust in it . Not the best autofocus but it's manageable as long as you know your workarounds .

The 4K video is amazing !! Plus the HD 180 FPS is a nice feature to have . Oh and did I mention about being able to hook this up with a V-Mount battery via usb -C to Dtap cable ? That and the Atomos ninja v make it a nice compact run and gun filmmaking kit .

The Leica look is an obsession that a lot of Leica owners would admit to as a reason for purchasing this tool . Despite some of it's minor short comings , it's an amazing step forward in my career being able to provide images from this camera .

Thank you B&H for shipping this out to me in a timely manner ! You guys are the best !

[Bulb Mode] This is the perfect little sister to accomany my Leica SL2. Same awesome, intuitive menu, just better light sensitivity and videos, but 24.6 Megapixels rather than 47.3. I'm selling most of my other gear to buy nothing but Leica. Leica gives better color right out of the box, sharper, plus awesome image stabilization to handhold almost anything. The DNG format is more widely supported than CR2 or CR3, saving a step using certain software.
