The Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 Telescope with Solar Filterfrom Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 Telescope with Solar Filteris a powerful, portable, versatile, and user-friendly telescope that can be used for observing everything from the Moon and planets to deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulae. Using Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT multicoating system, light transmission is increased throughout the entire optical path with antireflection multicoated lenses, highly reflective multicoated mirrors, and four-element rare-earth glass. While the focal ratio is a slow f/10, the scope's precision tracking system allows it to be a competent astrophotography/astroimaging platform for the Moon and planets.

The Evolution comes with two ways to use and control it. The first is to simply download Celestron's free Navigator app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The scope's Wi-Fi provides the connection to the app and expands the capabilities and functionality, including an expanded database of over 120,000 objects with detailed information on more than 200 of those objects. Second is the iconic 2-line 16-character NexStar computer controller. This is a wired piece of hardware with a database of over 40,000 celestial objects plus several astronomical catalogs including the Messier and Caldwell. Whether using the controller or mobile device, the system can assist in properly aligning the scope, provide tours of the objects and events visible whenever and wherever you're viewing, and allow for manual direction and slew control.

Designed for portability, the Evolution features a long-life lithium-iron phosphate battery providing up to 10 hours of continual use on a single charge. The scope comes with an AC power supply with plugs for the US, EU, UK, and AU outlets. The battery powers the servo motors, auxiliary accessory ports, a USB charging port, and the built-in Wi-Fi. Manual clutches in both altitude and azimuth enable you to manually move and point the telescope when it's powered off.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi! With the November and December holidays coming relatively soon; historically how typical would this telescope go on sale? Is it worth the chance and wait? Thanks!!

A: So we do have Sales all year around. Usually during the Holiday Season that is when the Manufacturer's have better offers though.

Q: 2. I need to know a) what are the dimensions of the case and what will be the total weight when carriyng the scope (nexstar evolution 8 with starsense device)b) is there a smaller case to carry the mount and the optical tube only?thank you

A: I got the case that fits just the optical tube. I think that any case that carried the tube and the driver mount would have to be quite large as the minimum length of the mount is 18 . The legs are 34 long if that is what you meant. Part of the reason we got the scope is the fact that the individual parts are light enough for my wife to pick up and use. We have a Meade LX200 original that is getting too heavy for use to safely carry any distance, so it stays at our observing shed. The Celestron will go back and forth with us when we travel.

Q: 3. Does the OTA and Goto Arm fit in the Card Case? Is there already cutout for both included?

A: Yes, the OTA & the arm & base fit right in the cutout. The die-cut foam lining includes compartments for telescope, eyepieces, finder scope and accessories. The finder scope must be removed from the telescope and placed in a foam compartment.

Q: 4. Can this telescope also be powered from a mains lead or is it battery only?

A: While this telescope comes with AC adapter for charging, Celestron specifies using only battery power (though not while charging) for the evolution series telescopes.

Q: 5. It is said that this requires 3 stars alignment , so after three stars aligned , does that mean it will go other objects on command or you still need to align it again other objects ?

A: No, once the telescope is aligned (3-star alignment is only one of the options, but there are others), you can ask it to go to other objects directly, either by using the app or hand controller.

Q: 6. What do I need to use 2 inch EPs?

A: You need a 2 diagonal (I use a Televue) and a 2 Visual Back to mate it to the optical tube. You can use a 2 to 1.25 adaptor to mount 1.25 eyepieces into the 2 diagonal so you can switch to a high power eyepiece without having to remove the 2 diagonal and visual back.

Q: 7. Is hard box included ?

A: This kit does have the JMI Telescopes Hard Carrying Case for 8" Celestron NexStar Evolution.

Q: 8. Does the telescope come already in the Hard Case in this kit or do the come separately packed?

A: This question is a double of the prior question.

Q: 9. What is the package shipping weight and dimensions?

A: Unfortunately we are unable to provide the Shipping Dimensions, and Weight. My apologies. The dimensions of the scope packaged in the manufacturer's box is 43 X 28 X 15 (LXWXH).

Q: 10. What is the minimum and maximum height of the tripod with the legs spread out, and how tall is the alt-az mount?Thank you for answering my question.

A: It is 22 -40 .

[43 x 28 x 15"] Received my new Celestron Evolution 6 in 2 days thanks to B&H free expedited shipping. The reviews by Ed Ting and others of this scope made it seem terrific, and it is. Many thoughtful design elements throughout and a very attractive, user friendly package. The optics are very clean and the computer aided alignment options work very well. It’s a great grab and go scope for when you just have a short time for observing.
Unfortunately the first scope was defective out of the box and had azimuth motor issues. After contacting Celestron about the issue and waiting a week with no reply, I reached out to B&H by chat. First, every B&H employee was sensitive to the disappointment you feel when a purchase you are excited about is defective. My problem was quickly diagnosed and within several minutes a free shipping label was in my inbox. My return was processed unbelievably quickly and within 6 days my replacement scope arrived and it is perfect!
I have always been impressed by B&H customer service but my experience with this telescope exchange confirms that their service is the best in the business. Between the curated product selection, the expert advice, customer service and value pricing B&H is the best!

[f/10] My 17 yo son loves the NextStar Evolution 8. He is still figuring out other features but the images taken are stunningly sharp. Great value and B&H provides reliable services, especially prompt delivery timing.

[2032 mm] I use this scope to take out when I only want to observe and not deal with my Celestron 11" for astrophotography. Easy to set up and move. I have the optional StarSense and alignment has never been easier.

[Star] Been a great few months getting to know the telescope, all the in's and out's.works perfect for me(total amateur).I did find it a bit heavy for a 6 scope but overall I'm am more than happy with it.

[Dovetail] The Evolution is a super telescope! The Skyalign software is really convenient, it only requires pointing to 3 bright stars and even identifies those alignment stars. The built in rechargeable battery is just great.

[f/10] I've been waiting for months for the 8 or 9.25 Evolution to arrive. I have several scopes of larger apertures and my get outside fast scope is my 10 Dob on wheelie bars in the garage. I live in a dense light polluted area, a few miles from Phoenix downtown. Big dob captures a lot of light pollution as well as a few more DSOs so, for the moon, planets, M31, M42 when they're in my narrow window or when I want to just run up to the park a few miles away I can toss this on my front seat, takes up no room, and I have easy quick set-up, true go-to efficiency with the quick three star/planet alignment in the new Evolution. Don't expect to see dark nebulae or faint galaxies with this 6 scope but the optics are very crisp even with the supplied eyepieces. I did add the Celestron 2 diagonal as I have mostly 2 eyepieces and I experienced no vignette effects. Tripod is sturdy enough for this scope but I'd heard others with the 8 not as pleased (9.25 has a heavier set-up). I found it easier to use with the hand piece than a tablet and the Sky Portal app but I run the app anyway control with the hand piece. Overall a great addition to my collection. A good beginner scope but too much reliance on the electronics can be an issue and, the battery will someday fail; not easily replaced.

[2032 mm] I have been using this scope for about 10 months. My last telescope was a cheap Costco dob, so this is my first real telescope.

It says culminated, connects quickly to wifi, is fairly stable in light wind, and is very easy to setup. I keep the tripod in a large tripod bag and the telescope in a large pelican case. With this combination, I can safely take this scope anywhere in a modestly portable setup.

Everything seems well bad and it hasn't had any issues in my 30+ observing sessions.

Go-to is very accurate if you do 3 star alignment and then add stars via the app. It can slew across the whole sky and land dead on to a target.

My biggest issue, as many have said, is the red dot finder. It is cheap and even as a fit young man, it is a pain on my back to look through if I need to align to something high in the sky. For the money, they should include a better finder. A RACI finder is my next accessory and should have been included.

All in all, I love this thing!

[1.25"] I have an older C8 on an older EQ heavy duty mount that is becoming more and more less portable. Most of my accessories from my C8 fit the 8EVO. Can't wait to take this new one out once the weather breaks. I purchased the Pelican iM2975 case at the same time. I only have the mount/scope case, tripod and lens storage box to have to take out now. With the setup using my ipad and wifi software on the mount it only takes minutes to get setup. Like with the case, using B&H was a no brainer.

[Star] After ten years using a dobsonian scope I decided to go back to a go-to SCT. I previously owned a Meade LX-90 so I'm familiar with this style telescope. Knowing Celestron's good reputation I chose the NexStar Evolution 8. The scope arrived very well packed and has very high quality construction. I've not yet had a chance to use it outdoors (cloudy, rainy winter weather). I was extremely impressed with the FedEx expedited shipping B&H provided, free of charge. Best shipping of any vendor I checked with.

[63.7 lb] Used the scope about 5 times so far. Very easy to align with the hand controller using 2 star. The Sky align seems to fail for me but it could be because I have a limited view of the sky and stars aren't far apart. Hard to tell.

Instructions are lacking and app isn't great, but the tracking, optics, and form factor are so great that I am willing to overlook those issues.

So far so good!
