If you're a studio engineer, the Royer Labs R-121 Ribbon Microphone Bundle with Shockmountsfrom Royer Labs probably needs no introduction: this is the matched pair of studio ribbon microphones that put ribbon microphones back on the map again. Where ribbon microphones were always prized for their sound but considered largely finicky, the R-121 is equally prized for its sound and is about as durable as a ribbon microphone can be.

The mic is known for its warm and natural sound, free from the hyped-up high-end usually associated with condenser mics. It's perfect for anything from vocals to drum rooms to guitar amps to symphonic/choral sections. With its figure-8 polar pattern, it can pick up sound equally from behind or in front of the capsule. The R-121 boasts high SPL handling for close capturing of instrument cabinets, drums, and other transient-rich sources without noise and distortion.

The R-121 delivers the performance you'd expected of a top-quality ribbon microphone, but with the added benefit of not breaking when you mic a sound with a high SPL. There are no internal active electronics to overload or produce distortion up to maximum SPL rating, which is quite high indeed. Furthermore, the ribbon element is not affected by heat or humidity.

Exhibiting almost no noise of its own, the mic is completely absent of high-frequency phase distortion, and it gives you a consistent frequency response regardless of your distance from the mic. All of this means one thing: an exceedingly transparent audio reproduction.

You can use this mic on almost everything. It excels on electric guitar amps, brass instruments, horn sections, all woodwind or symphonic instruments, drum rooms, overheads, kick drums, and more.

[Figure-8] Don't be put off by the bargain price, this is a wonderful amp mic, period. The RSM5 is impressive sounding on guitar amps or speaker cabs. In that application, it's better combine the RSM5 w/ another non-ribbon mic, like condenser or dynamic. I get great results combining RSM5 with a ShureSM57. The RSM5 adds a delightfully smooth, warm low end girth & the SM57 adds presence, cut and sparkle. Experiment with positioning the mics on the speaker cone. As with all bargain ribbon mics, be sure to check your RSM5 for loose ribbon tension before keeping it. Google the issue and how to do a test. The tension inside mine was perfect out of the box. The RSM5 takes EQ great, yet doesn't need much to fit into a mix. It's very low noise. I have not yet really tried the RSM5 on other sound sources. Like all passive ribbons, this one needs lots of preamp gain or a mic booster to get a good level with quiet sources. With a loud source like guitar amp, that's not an issue with the RSM5. The preamps built into my Steinberg UR44 interface are more than powerful enough to get great results with Nady RSM5 on amps. I even briefly tried it on my male spoken voice, for which the preamps had to be turned up quite a bit, but I think even that would work without any extra preamp booster. I suspect that on quieter voices, or acoustic guitar from a distance, you'd need a gainier preamp, or FETHEAD or Cloudlifter to get a good level with the RSM5. The RSM5 has presentable build quality, and it sounds much, much better than I imagined, especially at this price point. It's downright unbelievable! I love the tones I am capturing having this mic as part of the mix. I have been playing music seriously for 40 years, and am fanatical about good tone. Nonetheless, given the great results with the RSM5, I could not justify the extra cost of the high end ribbon mics.

[Figure-8] B and H had my order ready in no time, and this is a great microphone! Using it for woodwinds and guitar so far and it has a beautiful mid range without too much harsh high end.

[Mono] The R44CXE is such a warm, rich sounding mic. Full bodied with smooth hi end makes it wonderful on female vocals, as a drum room mic and horns. Can't wait to try it on other instruments!!!

[6.9 lb] Seems to work quite well. Obvious use is for vocals. Not much more to say, other than that it looks nice too. The clip-on part is designed to fit on a fairly narrow mic stand pole, evidently. It doesn't quite work with my set up, but I managed to affix it to something.

[Figure-8] I have used this mic for the first time for an on-location recording of a choir, band, and orchestra. I can verfy all the claims that Royer Labs make for this product. The sound is gorgeous - silky smooth and so accurate. The stereo image and location of individual instruments therein is absolutely uncanny! It is every bit as good as any recording I have ever heard from major studios. The crossed figure eight pickup pattern gives great ambience to the sound - you just have to hope your audience is quiet if you are recording a live performance (an acceptable tradeoff, I think). And, of course, being a ribbon microphone, you have to be sooo careful with it. It comes in a double case with a very well designed isolation mount included, a 25' 5 conductor cable, and a suitable 5 pin to two 3 pin XLR adaptor - all you need.
