The Royer Labs R-122 MKII Ribbon Microphone with Shockmountuses phantom power and founder David Royer's innovative microphone design to record natural and transparent electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric bass, acoustic bass, drum overheads, brass, percussion, piano strings, woodwinds, Foley, and many other sources.

The microphone is similar to the company's R-121 ribbon microphone but has a faster transient response and a larger audio transformer for more open highs and a tighter more focused low-end response.

The MKII version of the original (introduced in 2002), incorporates a -15 dB pad and a switchable bass-cut filter. The switches are completely out of the circuit when disengaged. They are also recessed to prevent accidental activation.

The microphone's -15 dB pad is positioned before the unit's electronics and when engaged eliminates the potential for headroom-related distortion on even the loudest sources without imparting a sonic imprint on the material.

The microphone's bass cut starts filtering at 100 Hz at a rate of 6 dB per octave to effectively reduce the unit's bass buildup due to the proximity effect. The smooth filter is useful for vocals, acoustic instruments, and closed-miked electric guitars when less bottom end is desired.

The active electronics of the device are hand-wired in Burbank, CA with a specially designed toroidal transformer that delivers faster transient response than traditional ribbons. This makes the microphone useful for drum overheads, percussion, and all acoustic instruments.

A fully balanced handwired discrete head amplifier system uses the specially wound toroidal transformer and ultralow-noise FETs to bring the microphone's sensitivity to 36 dB while still allowing high-SPL recording without the introduction of self-noise. The phantom-powered circuitry provides impedance conversion to handle a wide variety of preamplifiers.

The microphone's proprietary offset ribbon transducer positions the ribbon element closer to the front (logo) side of the microphone to allow more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining a full frequency response during high-SPL recordings.

Uses a fully balanced discrete head amplifier system with a specially wound toroidal transformer to handle SPLs as high as 135 dB with a sensitivity of -36 dB

Balances the load on the ribbon at all times to deliver 100% of its full sonic potential regardless of the input characteristics of the connected preamp. This also allows the microphone to be used with long cable runs with minimal signal loss as well as ensure that the ribbon element won't be damaged by phantom power, miswired cables, or electrical glitches

Uses an offset ribbon transducer to give the ribbon more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining a full frequency response during high-SPL recordings

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you use this with Sennheiser me66/k6 mic?

A: The Sennheiser MZS 600 shock mount is designed for the MKE600. The ME66/k6 is 2.5mm bigger in diameter than the mke600. It may be tight fit. The Sennheiser MZSK6 is a shock mount designed specifically for K6 microphones, but at this price-point, I would probably go with a different shockmount. Please consider the Rycote Universal Shotgun Mount (B&H# RYUSGM) as it is a better investment.

Q: 2. Will fit Samson G Track Pro?

A: No. You want the Samson SP04. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434449-REG/samson_sasp04tb_sp04_spider_shock_mount.html

Q: 3. Can I use it with the Rode Video Micro?

A: Unfortunately or fortunately not. That is made for a MKE 600 a full size shotgun. Also it won't be any better than what the Micro comes with. The Micro comes in a good lyre shock mount that is made just for that mic. Just use the mic as is. It's a great little mic and Rode made sure it has a quality shock mount.

Q: 4. Would this work with the Sennheiser MKH-416?

A: The Sennheiser MZS 600 Shockmount is designed specifically for use with the MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone. The MKE 600 has a diameter of 20mm and the Sennheiser MKH 416 has a diameter of 19mm. You may be able to use it, possibly with a rubber O-ring, if needed to tighten the fit.

Q: 5. Will this work with the Rode VideoMicro?

A: The Rode VideoMicro should fit inside the SmallRig 1859 shockmount when used without the windshield.

Q: 6. Will this work with a Blue Yeti Blackout Edition Microphone?

A: The Blue Yeti has a unique design that is only compatible with the Blue specially designed shockmount.

Q: 7. Will this fit an Electrovoice RE320 (or RE20)?

A: No, it will not. The mics that this is compatible with have a removable nut at the bottom of the mic that attach them to the shockmount. For the RE-20 you will want to use either the Auray SSM-BC10 or the EV 309A https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1075015-REG/auray_ssm_bc10_suspension_shock_mount.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/76703-REG/Electro_Voice_3091965_309A_Suspension_Microphone_Shock.html

Q: 8. Does anyone know the name of the replacement elastic bands? Or the size of the elastic bands? Thank you for your help!

A: While we don't sell the replacement bands separately, we do recommend either reaching out to the manufacturer at smallrig@smallrig.com, or looking to purchase a new mount, such as B&H # AUDUSM1.

Q: 9. can i pick up this product at the store?

A: Yes, at this moment this is available for store pickup. You may want to give us a quick call at 800-606-6969 before you come by, if not today, to verify.

Q: 10. Will this fit an MXL BCD-1?

A: I'm not sure that it will because the MXL-BCD-1 doesn't have a threaded end where the XLR cable plugs in. The way the mic is held into this mount is using a threaded washer. If you look at the Rode Procaster Mic (ROPROCASTER), you can see how there is a treaded washer at the end where you would mount into the shockmount. The BCD-1 has that additional bracket that almost replaces the need for a shockmount. Not sure this is the right product for the mic you have.

[Side Address] Seems to work quite well. Obvious use is for vocals. Not much more to say, other than that it looks nice too. The clip-on part is designed to fit on a fairly narrow mic stand pole, evidently. It doesn't quite work with my set up, but I managed to affix it to something.

[Side Address] I have used this mic for the first time for an on-location recording of a choir, band, and orchestra. I can verfy all the claims that Royer Labs make for this product. The sound is gorgeous - silky smooth and so accurate. The stereo image and location of individual instruments therein is absolutely uncanny! It is every bit as good as any recording I have ever heard from major studios. The crossed figure eight pickup pattern gives great ambience to the sound - you just have to hope your audience is quiet if you are recording a live performance (an acceptable tradeoff, I think). And, of course, being a ribbon microphone, you have to be sooo careful with it. It comes in a double case with a very well designed isolation mount included, a 25' 5 conductor cable, and a suitable 5 pin to two 3 pin XLR adaptor - all you need.

[3.6 lb] B and H had my order ready in no time, and this is a great microphone! Using it for woodwinds and guitar so far and it has a beautiful mid range without too much harsh high end.

[3.6 lb] The only way to filter, especially with ribbon mikes. There are others that work well enough, but they seem to block the sound a bit... coming out of them you won't feel a breeze, but the PS101 emits this gentle breeze which is just enough to convey the sound waves unimpeded.
Always use a pop filter of some kind, and the metal ones last and are washable, but this one is the best.

[3.6 lb] The re-birth of the ribbon microphone. I had been looking for one for the last six months and was so happy to finally find it at B&H. Thank you!
