Gently level the gain on vocals and instruments with the Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection Plug-In from Universal Audio, an exacting digital emulation of the legendary analog unit's special combination of optical compression and tube amplification. Three different versions of the unit are provided, each with its own subtly distinctive character. Use the Peak Reduction control to set the threshold level and the Gain to boost the output to compensate for post-compressor volume loss; that's it. Between the slow multistage release of the T4-photo-cell compressor and the warm tube amplification, the LA-2A provides the magic sauce for transparent level reduction with a hint of analog color for that professional polish.

Owners of Apollo interfaces can record in the box through the plug-in for a real-time LA-2A tracking experience. This plug-in software download includes a native version that will run on Mac and Windows computers without UA hardware as well as a second version that runs accelerated on Apollo interfaces and UAD-2 hardware.

Teletronix founder Jim Lawrence first used photocells for controlling audio gain in the early 1960s. His ingenious optical compression design was a technological breakthrough, far surpassing the stability and transparency of earlier circuits. Universal Audio founder M.T., Bill, Putnam later purchased this patented technology, continuing to manufacture the LA-2A for years to come.

The Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection puts three of the most coveted incarnations of the iconic Teletronix processor at your fingertips. Like the hardware, the LA-2A Silver, LA-2A Gray, and LA-2 models offer distinct variations in time constants, compression knee, headroom, distortion, program, frequency dependence, and more.

With a brushed aluminum panel and original T4B gain-reduction module, this cherished late-1960s silver version of the LA-2A manufactured by Bill Putnam is perhaps the most flexible of the three plug-ins in the collection. Its fast time constant makes it suitable for the widest variety of program material, including transient-rich sources like drums and percussion. Jim Lawrence's original mid-1960s gray version of the LA-2A maintains a more average time constant, providing a range of medium-speed compression.

The exceptionally rare, early 1960s LA-2 unit preceded the LA-2A by several years. It provides the slowest response and a unique mellowed sound due to 50 years of luminescent panel aging inside the T4 module. Use the LA-2 with legato tempos and vocal sources for a transparent and sublime mood unlike any other compressor.

[Download] I HAVE A HOME STUDIO AND THE AKG C414 XLII SETS AN EXAMPLE FOR RECORDING VOICES. IT HAS A BRIGHT END NOT SUITABLE FOR ALL INSTRUMENT RECORDINGS BUT IF YOU PLAN TO USE THIS MIC FOR VOCALS, BE SURE YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE BEST. THE APOLLO TWIN DUO PROVIDES ULTRA LOW LATENCY AND IN ADDITION TO THE UAD PLUGINS IT WORKS REALLY NICE.

[Download] This microphone is a godsend. As someone with very specific requirements, this mic delivers..big time. Now, bear in mind that I picked this mic the proper way-by going into B&H's mic room with a tech and testing out a bunch to find the one that suited me. This particular one fit like a glove because of where my voice sits. I have a very broad range, but am not a deep person necessarily. Rather, my middle was what I sought to bring out, and this microphone was THE one out of alllll the various ones tested, ..... There are other functions I haven't even tried yet, since I am a techno idiot and just want a reliable device that works. And this one does....

[Download] I've been using it to record vocals and direct keyboards and guitar. The Unison pre-amp that comes along with the Apollo sounds great and allows me to get professional sounding vocals without all the expensive studio gear. Also great for recording stereo keyboards with a bit of analog crunch or completely clean pre-amps.

[Download] I have used this for documentary work for 2 years. It has been with me to in the studio and brought along to interviews in a shoulder bag approximately 50 times.

What I dislike is the weight. It's heavy when I go one-person-band recording. I worry (and expect) every time that I will have a tube issue or some problem associated with having moved the unit out of my rack kit for setup elsewhere. Cross my fingers that it's never given me trouble or had malfunctions.

The manual was easy to read and follow. This is one of the best differentiators in terms of quality in my kit and has attracted talent because the sound is leaps and bounds above client expectations. I like that I have everything in one spot for a subject of any range (quiet and shy, loud and booming) with total confidence that I can get an archive-quality recording.

I have recorded into various pro recorders and ENG or compact cine cameras with it. In the future, the size and tube-only operation has led me to explore other options such as Twinfinity and Grace preamps.

I will second another reviewer that Universal Audio's changes seem to depart from the tradition of this old company. I have the whole thunderbolt-powered Universal Audio Apollo 8p racks at the home studio. They are not reliable like this unit, for me. It seems like the software-based mic pres always have some annoying issue or update. I have not taken this in for a warranty, given that it's worked without trouble.

[Download] AKG 414's are so versatile. The XL II's are very intimate, perfect for small room recordings and up-close & personal instrumental sounds. I love using them in Mid/Side for stereo recordings. They sound super clean and airy, and I'm especially enjoing them on singer-songwriter stuff.

[Download] I did a ton of research before throwing down the sizeable chunk of cash needed to get it. Everything they said was true. I use it primarily for bass and vocals, but I've thrown it on everything from drums to harmonica and it does the trick. The simple controls and ease of use are nice, making it easy to dial in the perfect setting. Kinda fun to crank it all the way up from time to time to see what it's capable of. 100% glad I got it and this is one of the cheapest places on the internet to get one. Additionally, customer service was fantastic. Thanks, B&H.

[Download] I bought this because I wanted to see if a better, quieter, switching power supply would improve the sound of my sonos port feeding into an external DAC. I had read that cheaper switching power supplies can create a lot of noise. I tried it and noticed better dynamic range and quieter noise floor. For me, it works well. I suspect that for others, it will depend on what type of device it is being attached to.
