The Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95 Lens for MFTis a bright, fast portrait-length lens that provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 85mm when used on Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. This manual focus, manual exposure prime lens utilizes a Selective Aperture Control System, which renders the aperture control ring as stepless and de-clicked for silent and smooth performance. This is ideally-suited to video applications or for greater control over aperture selection while shooting.

The optical construction integrates one Super High Refractive element as well as one aspherical element to minimize chromatic aberrations and produce imagery with notable clarity and sharpness. Ten aperture blades form a nearly circular diaphragm in order to produce an aesthetic bokeh that is noticeable when using shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques and a minimum focusing distance of 9.1" supports working with close-up subject matter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how many degrees does the focus ring approx. rotate, 135, 180, 225 ?

A: The focus ring on the Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95 Micro Four Thirds Lens rotates approx 270 degrees.

Q: 2. What can you buy or add so it can be used in rainy conditions?

A: An easy solution is the OP/TECH USA 8" Small Rain Sleeve (Pack of 2), B&H # OPRS8SM2PK which fits over the camera and lens. https://bhpho.to/2TAwgLp

Q: 3. Will this mount to a Canon 60D? Standard EF mount.

A: This lens cannot be used with a Canon 60D, standard EF mount. This lens will only work with Micro Four Thirds mount cameras.

Q: 4. On a GH4 is the apeture controled manually too? or can the camera move it (like with the finger dials)?

A: This lens is fully manual. It doesn't interface with the electronics at all. It's a phenomenal lens and worth the effort to manually adjust the exposure ring.

Q: 5. Hi, will this lens work on a s35 sensor? actually all of the m43 lineup lenses from voigtlander, will they work on s35 with no crop?

A: It will not. This lens only covers a MFT sized sensor and its 35mm Equivalent Focal Length will be 85mm.

Q: 6. Is the focus ring smoooth at all distances? Or is there a tightness when focusing from 10 to a foot distance?

A: smooth at all distances.

Q: 7. which means only rangefinder lens is the best for Sony7aS ? because i am looking for lens below f1.5. thanks

A: If your criteria are a fast, manual lens, the Voigtlander line of lenses is difficult to beat. I keep the 42.5 f/0.95 on my Pana GX7 continually and have it with me at all times. The build quality is second to none; on a scale of 1 to 10, its between a nineteen and a twenty-three. The lens is often described as heavy, and it is. I prefer heavy to light and wispy as most plastic lenses are. For me, the extra weight helps stabilize things when things get bouncy. I need all the help I can get in that department. Another positive, not to be over looked, is the 10-blade diaphragm, which is another clue to the quality of this lens.As a final thought, if you intend to shoot 4K video with the Sony 7aS, I cant think of a better lens to do it with, quality-wise. I think you will be shocked, as I was, when you view your first video with this lens. My daughter-in-law thinks the first video I shot, was so superior to what she was getting from professionals, she wanted to ask for her money back. She thinks its me, and I know its the equipment. I hope this helps with your decision.

Q: 8. What is the approximate physical length of this lens WITH the lens hood on?

A: 122mm with one filter (the hood 'mount' is removable, so you can still use filters and then the hood)

Q: 9. In daily use, how does this compare to the Panasonic Lumix G 42.5 mm f/1.7 OIS?

A: Main difference is the aperture of the Voigtlander is wider and offers better quality in low light and shallower depth of field. On the other hand it is manual focus only. The Panasonic lens offers autofocus.

Q: 10. Since this is a full manual lens, when you stop down the lens, does the image in the viewfinder grow darker? Does that make shooting at f 16 problematic? How is exposure control handled?

A: I haven't noticed that the image gets darker as you stop down. Maybe the EVF in the Olympus camera that I use it with compensates for the loss of light as the lens is stopped down. I haven't shot at F16. It's said that the effective depth of field in micro 4:3 cameras is the crop factor multiplied by the F-stop. The crop factor for the micros 4:3 system is two, which would make the effective depth of field at F16 similar to F32 on a full-frame camera. There might be diffraction issues with the lens beyond F11. At F8 or even F5.6 you can get clean, edge-to-edge sharpness with this lens.

[10] If you are the type of photographer who likes to mount old 35mm film lenses to your digital camera to obtain a unique look, this lens is for you. The Voiglander 60mm is a modern take on that approach. Built indestructible, the images are clean (free of defect) with some softness providing you with that uniqueness you don't achieve with razor sharp lens such as the OMD 45mm F/1.2 Pro. It's close focusing radius also gives it a 'macro like' performance for close ups. If I want a unique photograph that takes outstanding portraits, this is my go-to lens.

[f/0.95] These lenses are built like a tank. Everything is solid and smooth, you can adjust the aperture with clicked or clickless settings. This is the most distortion free wide angle lens I have ever used. There is some color fringiness at full open, but its a tradeoff for the amount of light pouring through the front, which lets you take shots in really low light conditions without cranking up the ISO.

All in all a really fantastic lens.

[10] It's the best wide lens for my GH4 plus its low-light feature. Although the image quality is not sharp when maximizing to F/0.95, it is still acceptable for video quality. Many reviews complain its heavy weight, but I am ok because Canon L series lens is heavier. Also I know people think M43 is hard for bokeh effet, but not with this lens. When switching to F0.95, the depth of field would look like F2.0, compared to full-frame camera. So you get F2.0 DoF feeling and get the real F0.95 light in :D The only thing I don't like is its rear lens cap. It is very loose and you can't tighten it for some reason. Remember to buy one instead.

[Manual Focus] I use this lens on my BMPCC, BMPCC4K and my Olympus camera! Stunning images both for cinematography and photography. In the hands of the right person this lens is a pure joy. I own the 17.5mm as well as the 42.5mm. Love them all! Worth every penny and then some...

[58 mm (Front)] Amazing lens... the stepless, De-Clicked aperture ring is smooth as butter. Sharp to the edges and incredible in low light. As a Panasonic GH4 user this lens keeps me away from the noisy ISO 1600 when external light is not an option. Depth of field is amazing (for a M43) wide open at F-0.95 so you have to be careful if that's not the look you're going for. Manual focus only so you have to be comfortable with that but with focus peaking I find it is dead on. At 21mm (35mm equivalent)I'm not noticing any distortion, so for me... it is the perfect lens. A little long and heavy but it is a well built piece of glass.

[58 mm (Front)] I wanted a .95 lens to use at low light events with my EM1X that had a longer reach than my LUMIX 42.5 1.2. The colors and renderings at any f stop are remarkable. Shooting at .95 is difficult with anything that moves, but if there is a pause in the movement and you use this lens for capturing candids or still life's in a room, you will be rewarded with some jaw dropping results from .95. It's is a heavy well built metal lens. It does pair very well with a larger m4/3 body like the EM1X or G9. I really like this lens and look for excuses to use it when I'm not utilizing at event shoots. It is an all manual lens, and if you don't like shooting manually, then this lens is not for you. The sale price and my desire for a longer wider aperture prompted me to try this lens out.

[10] It's just great, character, bookeh, sharpness.

Handling alone is a reason to get it, and you just WANT to take it and use it, photography is not just about taking pictures.

It's a prolonging pleasure to use this lens and to look at its results. I'm using it nearly all time wide open, the character - due to razor thin focus length is fantastic. If I had to choose it between the 42.5mm I would keep the 60mm.

Did I mention it also looks stunning? - even better than on pictures.

Once you have it in hands you will not let it go - lens like this is a reason to stick with mft.

[f/0.95] This lens is just wide enough before it gets that fisheye bend. It's gorgeous in both imagery and craftsmanship, the same as the rest of the lens line. My biggest surprise was the incredible depth of field when the lens is wide open. Still sharp enough to use, especially, at like 1.2. For the work that I do, this lens is a god send, and the missing piece to my micro 4/3 lineup. It's also the perfect mate for the GH4 and my Helix Jr.

[58 mm (Front)] Yes, it is large and heavy, but worth it. I have two other Voigtlander lenses for my Olympus Pen F bodies (17.5mm and 42.5mm). I am impressed with the mechanical quality and optical performance.

Wide open, it does have some visible chromatic aberration, but it goes away when stopped down a bit. Color saturation is really nice. An extra feature is that it focuses down to 1/4 life-size. Not quite Macro, but very useful.

I highly recommend the Voigtlander lenses. The build quality is high and the image quality is remarkable for being f0.95 lenses.

And, by using focus peaking, I don't miss auto-focus. In fact, the peaking shows what is and is not focused.

[f/0.95] Owning this lens and the other 4 Voigtländer f/0.95 lenses (10.5, 17.5, 25, 42.5) is a treat and a culmination of my exclusively shooting (since 2014) the best format for most video work, Micro Four Thirds. I've attached frames from a video I made, so there may be some motion blur, it's all handheld (camera stabilizer focal length set to 60mm on Panasonic GH5 II) and the lens was shot at f/0.95 the entire time. You can search for the finished video on YouTube: Dallas Zoo Visit Voigtländer 60mm. It all added up, everything from mastering exposure in the field using Shutter Priority (not manual in this case) alongside Auto Exposure Lock to maintain exposure (via ISO) when the frame rate is changed (for faster shooting), to understanding tone mapping and the fundamentals of the Zone System by Ansel Adams, to using Freewell Eiger IR CUT ND filters (stacked up to two from 2-11 stops of reduction, I don't use
VNDs as they cause polarization issues), to manually crafting my own nearly perfect SDR corrective LUT from VLOG-L by using a DSC Labs ChromaMatch Pro and getting the colors aligned in Davinci Resolve, to denoising (extracting more signal to noise ratio) every shot with a custom noise profile grabbed or created manually from each shot in Neat Video as my first color grading node then baking it down to the Node Cache / Render Cache, to using HDR Wheels to tone map the image, to highlight bloom in post (I don't use mist filters, you can do it in post), to using Dehancer Pro for Resolve to achieve a subtle film look and adding back in some subtle film grain. This is regular 10-bit LongGOP footage from Panasonic, not ProRes or anything fancier. Focusing on the lens is a little more sensitive than the other Voigtländers, but with practice you'll do fine. Get out and shoot. Enjoy :)
