[Yes] I understand SmallHD monitors are not cheap and that filmmaking, in general, is already expensive enough to justify dropping $1500 on a monitor. That being said, the alternative is more expensive in the long run. I originally bought an Atomos Shinobi because of the above reasons, but after terrible experiences with Atomos products, I decided to try SmallHD—and I was blown away by its ease of use and quality.

This monitor offers so many customizable options compared to its competitors that it's difficult to even begin to list them. I've never missed focus using it. Even in low light or super bright conditions, this monitor delivers. Tools are supposed to solve problems, not create more problems that need to be solved. This is an excellent tool for your filmmaking kit.

[LCD] The Tx monitor is light enough to carry on a gimbal. The Rx monitor (directors monitor) has a perfect size for a small crew production. The battery life is almost 3 hours, it has cero latency, the wireless video transmission is instantaneously. The monitor has all SmallHD menu capabilities while the Teradek is all you need for a 500 feet wireless video. I use it with my gimbal and a Redrock follow focus. Very portable and easy to use.

[LCD] This Cine 5 checked almost all the boxes for my requirements for an external monitor - the Ultra 5 has the extra function buttons that I would like, but at a much higher price than the Cine 5. Everything works as expected, the touchscreen has been very responsive, accurate, and definitely viewable in direct sunlight. It can get warm after a while, but that’s to be expected. The design is well thought out, with a quiet internal blower fan that blows air through a heatsink, but also spreads the heat to its aluminum chassis. The Page OS is so intuitive and fast, I am never waiting to scroll through the different pages I set up with focus assist, false color and waveform for example. I am not a pro videographer, but I do appreciate all the features that make this monitor easy not navigate and use. The only minor issue I had was a frequent request to register the monitor or skip. After an email with customer service, and a factory reset, all is well now. I did have all my configurations saved to an SD card, so after the reset I reloaded the config file and was up and running. My previous SmallHD DP4 still works, but it’s nice to see the progress that has come to the company’s product line over the years. This is a very nice monitor, and I highly recommend it.

[1920 x 1080] The original focus monitor was a game changer. This opens doors to bigger productions, higher production value, and convenience when working with a gimbal or a crew. It's not cheap, but it levels you up.

[443 ppi] I was able to get my hands on the first batch of these monitors and it did not disappoint. It's built like a tank, bright enough for broad daylight work and makes modifications on the fly smooth sailing. High price tag but you get what you pay for.

[2.08 lb] Using with my Trinity 2. Really great size and weight.

[Aluminum] First off, the SmallHD PageOS operating system is by far the best I have used and is why this system is worth a significant premium over monitors with similar*cough* specs. If you need easy access to a fully customizable array of professional tools INSTANTLY, there really is nothing like it. I strongly suggest reading the full PageOS manual and also looking at some of the Exposure Tools tutorials. The fully customizable false color exposure assist that has multiple presets you can flip between is a fantastic tool worth fully exploring.

This is my third SmallHD monitor, and every one has been great. The design evolution is really obvious, and attention to the details is great. The Ultra is built like a tank and pretty heavy, so keep that in mind when chosing a mount. I use a magic-arm, or a SHAPE pushbutton monitor bracket. Don't cheap out on the mounting.

Image quality is quite good, with nice color gamut. (Note: Color has some shift in high-brightness mode, but if you need it that bright you arent judging color visually). Standard brightness mode is really really bright. More than I need in 99% of situations. High Brightness mode is visible in extremely bright conditions, like desert/beach/water, but you will still want a proper hood.
Note: the SmallHD hood is not adequate, just too small, and the open bottom for touchscreen access makes it ineffective. Considering the monitor has full physical buttons and does not NEED to be operated as a touchscreen, a full four sided soft hood would work way better.

Overall I am very satisfied.

[1920 x 1080] I love these monitors! I use them with my Z-Cam E-2 for pulling focus when on a gimbal. As well as a directors monitor for clients. Great entry to wireless video. Almost no latency between these monitors.

[16:9] I bought 2x for my Canon c70's, I have them paired with the Wooden Camera Hinge for the c70, the custom function buttons adds great speed to my work flow.

[Yes] I almost didn't buy this monitor because of the negative comments I read here on B&H about the fan noise this monitor has. But I finally decided to trust SmallHD and their reputation, and invest into this monitor... I'm so glad I did. Fan noise IS NOT a problem at all. And I am primarily an ENG style shooter with a shotgun mic mounted to my camera. You can hardly hear it at all. And you definitely DO NOT hear it in a recording. Also the colors are excellent. The images on screen look beautiful. It's super nice having a button on the side, so I don't have to use the touch screen all the time. And there are awesome tools that help me with focusing, luts, framing, and all sorts of things. The build quality feels great. It get's hot when you use it, and it's performed flawlessly for me since I bought it. I am so so so happy with this purchase and highly recommend this monitor. I think the reason there are so many negative reviews on this monitor, is because a few people got a dud, or didn't like something about it... but most people know how good SmallHD is, and most people have heard stories about SmallHD monitors like the 502 bright lasting people 7+ years, so they don't really feel like they need to leave a review. But I feel like I was mislead by the reviews here, this was my first SmallHD monitor, and I thought I'd share my experience. This monitor ROCKS!!!!!
